The Berlin U-Bahn is a rapid transit system in Berlin, the capital and largest city of Germany, and a major part of the city's public transport system. Together with the S-Bahn, a network of suburban train lines, and a tram network that operates mostly in the eastern parts of the city, it serves as the main means of transport in the capital.
The Berlin S-Bahn is a rapid transit railway system in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under this name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area Berliner Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen. It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. As such, the Berlin S-Bahn blends elements of a commuter rail service and a rapid transit system.
U2 is a line of the Berlin U-Bahn. The U2 line starts at Pankow S-Bahn station, runs through the eastern city centre (Alexanderplatz) to Potsdamer Platz, the western city centre and finally to the Ruhleben terminal station.
The Berlin tramway is the main tram system in Berlin, Germany. It is one of the oldest tram networks in the world having its origins in 1865 and is operated by Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), which was founded in 1929. It is notable for being the third-largest tram system in the world, after Melbourne and St. Petersburg. Berlin's tram system is made up of 22 lines that operate across a standard gauge network, with almost 800 stops and measuring almost 190 kilometres (120 mi) in route length and 430 kilometres (270 mi) in line length. Nine of the lines, called Metrotram, operate 24 hours a day and are identified with the letter "M" before their number; the other thirteen lines are regular city tram lines and are identified by just a line number.
Vinetastraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station in the Pankow district, located on the U2. It was opened in 1930, and for decades was the northern terminus of the U2, until the line was extended to the Pankow S-Bahn station in 2000.
The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe is the main public transport company of Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It manages the city's U-Bahn underground railway, tram, bus, replacement services and ferry networks, but not the S-Bahn urban rail system.
Weißensee is a quarter in the borough of Pankow in Berlin, Germany, that takes its name from the small lake Weißer See within it. Before Berlin's 2001 administrative reform, Weißensee was a borough in its own right, consisting of the quarters of Weißensee, Heinersdorf, Blankenburg, Karow and Stadtrandsiedlung Malchow. A fictional German-language TV series by the same name is set in the borough between 1980 and 1990 during the communist era.
Hönow is a Berlin U-Bahn station and the eastern terminus of the U5 line. Located at the borders of the Berliner ward of Hellersdorf, the station borders Hönow, a village of the Hoppegarten municipality in the state of Brandenburg.
Scharnweberstraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U6. It was constructed by B. Grimmek in 1958. Due to the extension of the U6, the trains had to go above ground after Kurt-Schumacher-Platz station. Soil for the embankment on which the line is built came from excavations for the U9, which was being built in parallel. As the trains had to go above ground, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), who operate the Berlin U-Bahn, had to install windscreen wipers on the trains.
Afrikanische Straße is a station in the Wedding district of Berlin which serves the U6 line and is operated by the BVG. The station is located under the Müllerstraße, one of the district's major shopping streets and thoroughfares, but named for another major street nearby. The BVG uses the station under the internal abbreviation Afr; the train station is 631 meters from the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz U-Bahn Station and 587 meters from the Rehberge U-Bahn Station.
Naturkundemuseum, formerly Zinnowitzer Straße, is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U6 in the district Mitte.
Britz-Süd is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U7. It was opened in 1963 and constructed by W.Düttmann. Characteristics are the grey tiles on the walls. Until 2003 this station only had a southern entrance. In 2003 the northern entrance was opened due to BVG safety policies. The station is only 3,5m below the street. The next station is Johannisthaler Chaussee.
Berlin-Wittenau (in German S-Bahnhof Berlin-Wittenau, officially Wittenau (Wilhelmsruher Damm)) is a railway station in the Wittenau district of Berlin, Germany. It is served by the Berlin S-Bahn and numerous local buses. It is also the northern terminus of the Berlin U-Bahn line U8.
Boddinstraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U8. It is located below Hermannstrasse at the intersection of Boddinstrasse in the Neukölln district. The station, opened in 1927, is one of the oldest on the line and is operated by the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) under the abbreviation Bo. The station's name comes from Hermann Boddin, mayor of the community from 1874 to 1907 and later the mayor of Rixdorf, today's district of Neukölln.
Turmstraße is a Berlin U-Bahn station located on the U9 line. The station is located in fare zone A. It was opened on 28 August 1961, and designed by B. Grimmek.
Berlin has developed a highly complex transportation infrastructure providing very diverse modes of urban mobility. 979 bridges cross 197 kilometers of innercity waterways, 5,334 kilometres (3,314 mi) of roads run through Berlin, of which 73 kilometres (45 mi) are motorways. Long-distance rail lines connect Berlin with all of the major cities of Germany and with many cities in neighboring European countries. Regional rail lines provide access to the surrounding regions of Brandenburg and to the Baltic Sea.
BVG may refer to:
Bus transport is the oldest public transport service in Berlin, the capital city of Germany, having been introduced in 1846. Since 1929, services have been operated by the Berlin Transport Company, although during the Cold War-era division of the city they operated in West Berlin only. BVG's fleet consists of 1,550 vehicles, which cover 300,000 kilometres per day.
The Class G is an electric multiple unit train type used on the Berlin U-Bahn. The trains were originally developed for the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe of East-Berlin.
