This is a list of hazing-related deaths in the Philippines. This is not an exhaustive list. Inclusion in this list requires that the incident was described by the media as a hazing-related death. Majority of deaths in this list include but is not limited to cases that involve fraternities.

The first reported hazing death in the Philippines was that of Gonzalo Mariano Albert, a University of the Philippines Diliman student and an Upsilon Sigma Phi neophyte. He died in 1954.

The death of Leonardo Villa in 1991 led to the passage of the Anti-Hazing Act of 1995. [1]

February 10, 1991Leonardo Villa Aquila Legis Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon CityIn November 1993, 26 of 35 accused fraternity members were initially convicted of homicide. [12] After the case was brought to the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, the charges against the five were eventually downgraded to reckless imprudence resulting in homicide in 2012; nineteen were acquitted in 2002; and two died pending the decisions. Charges against the other five were dismissed. [1] In 2014, the SC issued a final decision that the five were "eligible for probation." [13] [14]

Villa's death led to the passage of the Anti-Hazing Act of 1995. [3] [1] [15]

The Sigma Rho Fraternity (ΣΡ) is a College of Law-based fraternity in the University of the Philippines Diliman. Having been formally organized in 1938, it is the oldest law-based Greek-letter fraternity in Asia. However, it has also expanded its membership base to include undergraduate students, including those studying for degrees in engineering, business, and sports science. It is one of the three fraternities based in the College of Law, the other two being Alpha Phi Beta and Scintilla Juris.

The 2010 Philippine Bar exam bombing occurred on Taft Avenue near De La Salle University (DLSU), located in Malate, Manila, Philippines, on September 26, 2010, at 5:05 pm PST, a few minutes after Philippine Bar examinees began exiting DLSU. A Mk2 grenade was thrown at a group of Alpha Phi Beta members from San Beda College. They were standing near Tau Gamma Phi members, who police believed were the real target of the explosive. This resulted in injuries to 47 people, including two who required amputations.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Alpha Kappa Rho</span> Philippine fraternity

The Alpha Kappa Rho International Humanitarian Service Fraternity and Sorority is a fraternity established in the Philippines in 1973. The fraternity, comprising men and women from different universities, was originally established to promote loyalty, unity, and integrity in the fraternity amongst its members. It is registered as an International Humanitarian Service Fraternity and Sorority which encourages members to be involved in humanitarian projects and service worldwide. The fraternity is registered with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-profit and non-dividend corporation. AKRHO claims to have chapters worldwide.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Death of Darwin Dormitorio</span> 2019 hazing death in the Philippines

Darwin Dioso Dormitorio died as the result of maltreatment at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), Baguio, Benguet, Philippines. He was laid to rest on September 25, 2019, in his hometown of Cagayan de Oro and was given full military honors. In 2019, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), along with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), announced plans to investigate his death, and a House of Representatives resolution was filed seeking a congressional inquiry into the incident. In 2020, two PMA cadets were indicted for murder and three PMA doctors were also charged with participation in the crime.

The Alpha Phi BetaFraternity is a fraternity based in the University of the Philippines College of Law with no recognized chapters outside University of the Philippines Diliman. The fraternity's membership hails from the College of Law and from pre-law colleges in the campus. 2019 marked the fraternity's 80th Anniversary. It is one of the three fraternities based in the college, the other two being Sigma Rho fraternity and Scintilla Juris.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Death of John Matthew Salilig</span> 2023 hazing death in the Philippines

John Matthew Torres Salilig, a 24-year-old 3rd-year chemical engineering student from Adamson University, died on February 18, 2023, after undergoing fraternity initiation rites conducted by Tau Gamma Phi in Biñan, Laguna. His body was later found by the police in a shallow grave in Imus, Cavite, on February 28, 2023. A police investigation determined that Salilig died from blunt force trauma as a result of the 70 blows he sustained during the initiation. At least 18 individuals were implicated by the police in the death of the student; seven of whom were arrested, including an alleged master initiator.
