The Red River, also known as the Hong River and Sông Cái in Vietnamese, and the Yuan River in Chinese, is a 1,149-kilometer (714 mi)-long river that flows from Yunnan in Southwest China through northern Vietnam to the Gulf of Tonkin. According to C. Michael Hogan, the associated Red River Fault was instrumental in forming the entire South China Sea at least as early as 37 million years before present. The name red and southern position in China are associated in traditional cardinal directions. The river is relatively shallow, and carries a lot of reddish silt along its way, appearing red brown in colour.

Haiphong or Hai Phong is the third-largest city in Vietnam and is the principal port city of the Red River Delta. The municipality has an area of 1,526.52 km2 (589.39 sq mi), consisting of 8 urban districts, 6 rural districts and 1 municipal city (sub-city). Two of the rural districts cover islands in the South China Sea: Bạch Long Vĩ and Cát Hải. It has a population of 2,130,898 in 2023. The city's economy has strength in manufacturing, as evident by large industrial parks and numerous smaller traditional handicraft villages. Historically, Haiphong is the first place in Vietnam and Mainland Southeast Asia to get electricity.

Phú Quý is a small island located about 100 km south-east of the city of Phan Thiết, Vietnam. The island contains three communes, with a population of 30,000 people. The island is home to Phu Quy Lighthouse situated in the north-west of the island and an abandoned military bunker on the eastern coast.

Quảng Yên is a county-level town of Quảng Ninh Province in the north-east region of Vietnam. The Bạch Đằng River flows through Yên Hưng. As of 2003 the district had a population of 137,198. The town was established by 2011 from former district of Yên Hưng, which covers an area of 314,2 km². Quảng Yên border Hạ Long city and Halong bay to the East, Thủy Nguyên, Cát Hải district, Hải Phòng city to the west and south, Uông Bí, Hoành Bồ district to the North.
Xuân Trường is a rural district of Nam Định province in the Red River Delta region of Vietnam. As of 2003 the district had a population of 179,765. The district covers an area of 113 km2. The district capital lies at Xuân Trường town.

Cu Lao Cham Marine Park also known as Cham Islands Biosphere Reserve is part of the eight islets of the Chàm Islands, located in the South China Sea under the administration of Tân Hiệp Commune and Hội An town, in Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. The terrestrial and coastal ecosystems of the islands have been recognized as a global Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO on 26 May 2009 under its 'Man and the Biosphere Programme' for its rich biodiversity value. The eco system also includes the ancient Hội An, which is 20 kilometres (12 mi) away from the islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hoàng Sa is an island district of Da Nang in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. It covers an area of 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the Paracel Islands, including these main features: Pattle Island, North Reef, Robert Island, Discovery Reef, Passu Keah, Triton Island, Tree Island, North Island, Middle Island, South Island, Woody Island, Lincoln Island, Duncan Island, Bombay Reef, Observation Bank, West Sand, Vuladdore Reef and Pyramid Rock.
The Trưng sisters' rebellion was an armed civil uprising in the southern provinces of Han China between 40 CE and 43 CE. In 40 CE, the Luoyue leader Trưng Trắc and her sister Trưng Nhị rebelled against Chinese authorities in Jiaozhi. In 42 CE, Han China dispatched General Ma Yuan to lead an army to strike down the Luoyue rebellion of the Trưng sisters. In 43 CE, the Han army fully suppressed the uprising and regained complete control. The Trưng sisters were captured and beheaded by the Han forces, although Vietnamese chronicles of the defeat records that the two sisters, having lost to Han forces, decided to commit suicide by jumping down the Hát Giang river, so as not to surrender to the Han.
