Location of Thane district in Maharashtra

Thane is one of the 36 districts in the Maharashtra state of India. The district is on the western coast and falls under the Konkan division of the state.

Until 1 August 2014 the district was divided into 15 talukas, viz. Thane, Kalyan, Murbad, Bhiwandi, Shahapur, Vasai, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Dahanu, Palghar, Talasari, Jawhar, Mokhada, Vada , Boisar and Vikramgad. However, on that date the district was split in two with the creation of a new Palghar district, which took 8 of these talukas, leaving the reduced Thane district comprising Thane, Kalyan, Murbad, Bhiwandi, Shahapur, Ulhasnagar and Ambarnath talukas.

The following are separate lists of towns/villages in the reduced Thane district and the new Palghar district. The population data is per Census 2011. [1]

Murbad is a census town within the administrative division (taluka) of Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Murbad city with its neighbouring villages jointly form the Murbad nagar panchayat, which is near the cities of Thane, Karjat and Kalyan. Nearby cities include Badlapur, Ambernath, Ulhasnagar, and Dombivli. It is a largely industrial town with private and public enterprises (MIDC).

Kalyan taluka is a taluka of the Thane district of Maharashtra in Konkan division. It is located between 19°4' and 19°24'N. and 73°1' and 73°24'E with an area of 276 square miles (710 km2). The capital is the city of Kalyan.

Shahapur Assembly constituency is one of the twenty four constituencies of Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha located in the Thane district. It is reserved for ST candidates. There is a Shahapur Assembly constituency in Karnataka as well.

He also worked as President of Thane Zilla Parishad from 2002 to 2004. He moved from Nationalist Congress Party to Bharatiya Janata Party in October 2014.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Line 5 (Mumbai Metro)</span> Metro line in Mumbai, India

Orange Line 5, or the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Line, is a rapid transit line in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Maharashtra, India, and part of the Mumbai Metro system. When fully completed, the 24.9 km (15.5 mi) line will connect Thane with Kalyan via Bhiwandi, with 17 stations. The line will be fully elevated except for a 3 km underground section in Bhiwandi.

The Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Shahapur and Bhiwandi taluka of Thane district and Wada taluka of Palghar district. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 320 square km. This sanctuary is spread around the catchment area of Tansa, Vaitarna and Modak Sagar lakes which are major source of water to the Mumbai, Thane and Bhiwandi cities. There are about 60 villages in the sanctuary area. The forest area is hilly with dense patches of forest.
