Konkan division is one of the six administrative divisions of Maharashtra state in India. It comprises the central portions of the Konkani region excluding Goa and Damaon, which were absorbed into Maharashtra owing to the States Reorganisation of India. Konkan division is the western section of present-day Maharashtra, alongside the west coast of India. The two districts of the state capital of Mumbai (Bombay) also fall into this division.

Demographics

As per the 2011 Census of India, Konkan division had a population of 28,601,441 [1]

Languages

The most spoken language is Marathi, which is also the sole official language of the region. Due to the presence of large number of migrants in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and other parts of Konkan; Hindi, Urdu and regional languages are also spoken by a significant portion of the population as their first language.

Religion

At the time of the 2011 Census of India, 74.31% of the population of Konkan division followed Hinduism, 15.26% Islam, 4.59% Buddhism, 2.52% Christianity and the remaining 3.32% of the population followed other religions or stated no religion. [1]

History of administrative districts in Konkan division

There have been changes in the names of districts. Newer districts were also added after India gained independence in 1947 and also after the state of Maharashtra was formed.

The Konkan is a stretch of land by the western coast of India, bound by the river Daman Ganga at Damaon in the north, to Anjediva Island next to Karwar town in the south; with the Arabian Sea to the west and the Deccan plateau to the east. The hinterland east of the coast has numerous river valleys, riverine islands and the hilly slopes known as the Western Ghats; that lead up into the tablelands of the Deccan. Thane district is a district in the Konkan Division of Maharashtra, India. At the 2011 Census it was the most populated district in the country, with 11,060,148 inhabitants; however, in August 2014 the district was split into two with the creation of a new Palghar district, leaving the reduced Thane district with a 2011 census population of 8,070,032. The headquarters of the district is the city of Thane. Other major cities in the district are Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur, Murbad and Shahapur.

Salsette Island is an island in Konkan division of the state of Maharashtra, along India's west coast. Administratively known as Greater Mumbai, the Mumbai Suburban district, Mira Bhayander and a portion of Thane district lie within it, making it very populous and one of the most densely populated islands in the world. It has a population of more than 20 million inhabitants living on an area of about 619 square kilometres (239 sq mi).

Mira Road is a suburb north of Mumbai in Thane District and is also a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It falls within the Police Jurisdiction of Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate. Mira Road is situated in the north-western portion of Salsette Island, Maharashtra state, India. Mira Road has a large Marathi population followed by other ethnic groups.

Palghar is a prominent town in the Konkan division of Maharashtra state, India, and a municipal council. It is Strategically located within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and since 2014, it has been the administrative capital of the Palghar district. Palghar plays a crucial role in Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway in the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail corridor. The town is located approximately 87 kilometers north of Mumbai, about 35 kilometers north of Virar, and about 24 kilometers west of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway at Manor and Mumbai is approximately 50+ km from Palghar.
