Lost Domain is the debut studio album by Irish musician Tim Wheeler, following his collaboration album with Emmy the Great, This Is Christmas (2011). Lost Domain was released on 7 November 2014 through Sony RED.
As a member of Ash, frontman Tim Wheeler released several top ten-charting albums, including the number ones 1977 (1996) and Free All Angels (2001). [1] In 2008, Tim Wheeler's father George Wheeler started suffering from Alzheimer's disease. After two years, he was admitted to a dementia ward; Tim Wheeler would spend the next six months travelling across the Atlantic Ocean to visit his father. In January 2011, George Wheeler died because of the disease. Upon returning to his home in New York City, Tim Wheeler attempted to focus his efforts on Ash. He found himself reminiscing on the time he spent visiting his father. As a way to cope with the death, Wheeler began writing songs about the situation. [2] He would subsequently compose soundtracks for television and films, such as for Spike Island (2012) and Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond . He was contemplating Ash's next album; alongside this, he realised he had some experimental ideas that he wanted to work on and expand into a solo album. [3]
Wheeler initially had difficulty structuring the songs, as this was something he previously had assistance on with his bandmates bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurrary. [3] Wheeler came across Mat Whitecross, who was working on the film Ashes , which dealt with the disease. Whiteacross asked Wheeler if he would contribute music to the movie. [2] Over a period of time, Wheeler wrote several tracks with Emmy the Great, culminating in their joint effort, This Is Christmas (2011). [4] Shortly after this, Ash played a show in November 2011 with the Divine Comedy; the father of the latter's frontman was also suffering from Alzheimer's. Wheeler subsequently began working with the charity Alzheimer's Society. [5] Wheeler recorded a solo album at a studio in New York City that Ash used; Claudius Mittendorfer and Wheeler produced the proceedings. [5]
Musically, the sound of Lost Domain has been described as orchestral; [6] it is a concept album that details George Wheeler's death as a result of Alzheimer's. [7] AllMusic reviewer James Christopher Monger said the album's themes unfold "more or less happens in real time", such as the diagnosis of the disease, experiencing the illness that followed and the eventual death. [8] musicOMH contributor John Murphy said the album can be broken into three sections, namely the "initial shock of the diagnosis, which leads into hospital visits and death, and eventually the final coming to terms with mortality and a focus on celebrating the departed person’s life". [9] Monger said that Tim Wheeler provided "(in great detail) arresting images of hospital visits, pain management, heartfelt family discussions, and various other (seemingly) mundane components of end-stage care". [8] Detailing the album's sound, The Irish Times writer Lauren Murphy said listeners "expecting histrionic guitars on the Ash frontman's solo debut might be surprised to learn that this is a sumptuous, largely orchestral affair". [6]
The album opens with "Snow in Nara", a guitar-centred instrumental track. [8] Wheeler said having this type of song as the first track was a "nicely cinematic, gentle and melancholic" to start the concept. He explained that Nara was a city in Japan, which he would like to visit. [10] "End of an Era" deals with change, specifically, a break-up that Wheeler was experiencing around the time his father was entering the hospital. [11] [10] "Do You Ever Think of Me?" has an orchestral backing that echoes the work of Elbow. [11] It is another break-up track that dated from five-to-six years ago. [10] "Hospital" is a piano ballad that compiles several events, including his father and his friends going into hospital. Wheeler explained that he saw his loved ones suffering and wished that he could take their place instead. [12] [10] "Medicine", with its experimental electronic backing, is a 10-minute long song that Wheeler unintentionally wrote from his father's perspective. [6] [7] [13]
During one occasion in the dementia ward, Wheeler saw a piano and proceeded to play it with his father, coming up with a piece of music that he considered to border on ambient. He recorded it and included it on "Medicine". [3] [10] [14] He went home and started playing a chord progression repeatedly, coming up with lyrics via stream-of-consciousness. He revisited it a year later, continuing adding parts to it until it clocked in at 17 minutes in length, which was later edited down to 10 minutes. [15] "First Sign of Spring" was the first song written for the album, and is about dealing with grief. [10] "Vigil" details George Wheeler's last moments as he lays in a hospital bed accompanied by his family. [9] The jazz-indebted instrumental "Vapour", which is in the style of the Divine Comedy, is in 5/4 time. [3] [6] [9] It came about from seeing jazz musicians after bumping into a former school friend while in New York City who was a "total jazz fiend". [3] With the piano ballad "Hold", Wheeler said that after his father's death he kept his feelings inside and felt like a ghost. [10] [6] "Lost Domain" is a Eurodance and synthpop song with chorus sections that recalled the work of Coldplay. [7] [11] Wheeler saw "Lost Domain" as about moving on, which he felt more open to after listening to "Valerie" (1982) by Steve Winwood. The album's closing track, "Monsoon", discusses grief affecting one's ability to be intimate with another person. As he opened the album gently, Wheeler wanted it to end in a similar manner. [10]
On 1 September 2014, Lost Domain was announced for release in two months' time; alongside this, the album's track listing was posted online and "First Sign of Spring" was made available for streaming. [5] The music video for "Vigil" premiered through Gigwise 's website on 28th October 2014. [16] Lost Domain was originally scheduled for release on 3 November 2004. [5] After made available for streaming via Drowned in Sound 's website on 4 November 2014, it was released on 7 November 2014 for Republic of Ireland and three days later for everywhere else through Sony RED. [5] [10] [15] Ten-percent of the album's sales through PledgeMusic were donated to Alzheimer's Society. [7] [10] Wheeler embarked on a short four-date tour of the UK to promote it. "Vigil" was released as a single on 10 November 2014. [16]

Lost Domain was met with generally favourable reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 79, based on seven reviews. [18] AnyDecentMusic? gave it a score of 6.4, based on eight reviews. [17]
Irish Independent writer John Meagher considered it "up there with [Wheeler's] best work he’s yet done", mentioning that there was a "considerable pain and sadness in his well-chosen lyrics, but there’s so much that celebrates life". [22] Monger wrote that the album was "as heavy as it is melodious"; he said that it was a "tiring listen, but it can also be a cathartic one," going on to praise the "adherence to pop craftsmanship and a willingness to see the whole thing through". [8] Gigslutz's James Van Praag shared a similar sentiment, stating that it was "not a difficult listen" for him, adding that the "lyrical content would not work nor be as poignant without the impressively varied and technically proficient music that surrounds it". [11] Lauren Murphy said Wheeler tackles the album's concept in a "remarkably candid manner that is refreshing, moving and even uplifting in places". [6] Evening Standard writer Andre Paine thought it was "lyrically anguished and sometimes experimental". [7]
Classic Rock writer Ian Fortnam said Wheeler made an album "so personal, so effecting [...] that its soul-rending lyrical subject matter is only rendered endurable by the sheer beauty of its masterly musical realisation". [20] Michael Conaghan of Belfast Telegraph felt that Wheeler had "stretched the musical palette to become a genuine multi-instrumentalist". [19] In a review for NME , journalist Mark Beaumont praised Wheeler for not "just bashing out a half-hearted country record or pulling a Johnny Borrell" like similar frontmen before him. [21] John Murphy said there was a "stronger feeling of catharsis and healing evident on Wheeler’s record", and warned listeners that it was "probably not one to listen to if you’re feeling in a mentally frail state". [9] James Glynn of State called the album "frankly awful" and found it "imply impossible not to question its content which veers from the melodramatic to the downright cheesy". [12]
Irish Independent ranked the album at number nine on their list of the year's best releases from Irish musicians. [23] Lauren Murphy would later include it on a 2022 list of overlooked releases by Irish musicians for The Times . [24] It was nominated for the 2015 Northern Ireland Music Prize, ultimately losing to Before We Forgot How to Dream (2015) by Soak. [25] [26]
1977 is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 6 May 1996 by Home Grown and Infectious Records, with whom the band had signed following the release of several demo tapes. Ash released the mini-album Trailer in 1994, and followed it with three singles "Kung Fu", "Girl from Mars", and "Angel Interceptor", all of which would reappear on 1977. Ash recorded their debut album with producer Owen Morris at Rockfield Studios in Wales in early 1996. Described as a Britpop, power pop and garage rock album, 1977 drew comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth.

After narrowly avoiding bankruptcy, the band released Free All Angels in 2001 and a string of successful singles.
"Shining Light" is a song by Ash, which was released as the first single from their album Free All Angels. It was released on 29 January 2001. It was released as a single CD and as a 7-inch vinyl. It was also Ash's first single to be released as an enhanced CD. "Shining Light" reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. The song had been covered by fellow Downpatrick songwriter Triona in 2015 which featured on a Power NI advert.
Darius Carlos Rucker is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He first gained fame as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of rock band Hootie & the Blowfish, which he founded in 1986 at the University of South Carolina along with Mark Bryan, Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, and Dean Felber. The band released five studio albums with Rucker as a member and charted six top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Rucker co-wrote most of the songs with the other members of the band.
Meltdown is the fourth studio album to be recorded by the Northern Irish rock band Ash. The album was released on 17 May 2004 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Following the success of their third studio album Free All Angels (2001), Ash debuted several new songs while touring throughout 2003. By October that year, they had travelled to Los Angeles, California, to record a follow-up album, which was co-produced by Nick Raskulinecz and the band. Recording sessions were held at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and at Chalice Studios, Hollywood. Meltdown, which is described as a hard rock album, drew comparisons to the work of The Smashing Pumpkins and critics said the guitar work resembles that of Black Sabbath and Metallica.

Free All Angels is the third studio album to be recorded by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 23 April 2001 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Due to the mixed reaction to the band's second studio album Nu-Clear Sounds (1998), frontman Tim Wheeler suffered from depression. He went to his parents' house in Northern Ireland to write material for the band's next album. Free All Angels was co-produced by the band and Owen Morris, and recording sessions were held at El Cortijo in Puerto Banús, Spain, then moved to The Wool Hall in Beckington and RAK Studios in London. The album was described as pop punk, power pop and punk rock, and drew comparisons to the works of China Drum, Compulsion, Hüsker Dü, and the Replacements.
Nu-Clear Sounds is the second studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 5 October 1998, through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Following the release of the band's debut studio album, 1977 (1996), guitarist Charlotte Hatherley became a member. They wrote new material at a farmhouse, before going to Wales to record their next album at Rockfield Studios. With additional sessions held at the Astoria in London, Ash produced the proceedings alongside Chris Kimsey and Owen Morris. A garage rock record, the New York Dolls, the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground inspired the album.
Grey Will Fade is the debut studio album by English musician Charlotte Hatherley, the guitarist for Ash, released by Double Dragon Music on 16 August 2004. Spurred on by the positive response to "Grey Will Fade", which appeared as a B-side to Ash's single "There's a Star" (2001), Hatherley set about recording her solo album. Enlisting the help of Eric Drew Feldman, the sessions for the album were happening concurrently in Los Angeles, California, at Wild Hamster, while Ash was recording their album Meltdown (2004). Described as a pop punk and power pop record, Hatherley's vocals on Grey Will Fade earned her comparisons to Björk, Tanya Donelly, and PJ Harvey.

Peter John Joseph Murphy is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He is the vocalist for the post-punk goth rock band Bauhaus. After Bauhaus initially disbanded, Murphy formed Dali's Car with Japan's bassist Mick Karn and released one album, The Waking Hour (1984). He later went on to release a number of solo albums, including Should the World Fail to Fall Apart (1986) and Love Hysteria (1988). In 1990, he achieved commercial success with his single "Cuts You Up", which went in the top 60 of the US Billboard Hot 100 which is for the singles sales. His album Deep also reached No. 44 on the Billboard 200. In 1992, Murphy released Holy Smoke, which reached No. 108 on the Billboard 200 chart along: it featured lead single "The Sweetest Drop". In 2002, Murphy released Dust with Turkish-Canadian composer and producer Mercan Dede, which utilizes traditional Turkish instrumentation and songwriting, abandoning Murphy's previous pop and rock incarnations, and juxtaposing elements from progressive rock, trance, classical music, and Middle Eastern music, coupled with Dede's trademark atmospheric electronics. In 2014, he released Lion, produced by Killing Joke's Youth, which reached No. 173 on the Billboard 200.
"A Life Less Ordinary" was a non-album single released by the band Ash on the 13th of October, 1997. It was the title track of the film of the same name, A Life Less Ordinary, starring Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor, and also appeared on the film's soundtrack. The single was released in three formats: CD, 7-inch vinyl, and cassette. The limited-edition 7-inch was printed on blue vinyl. The song peaked at number ten on the UK Singles Chart.
"Wagon Wheel" is a song co-written by Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. Dylan recorded the chorus in 1973; Secor added verses 25 years later. Old Crow Medicine Show's final version was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in April 2013. The song has been covered numerous times, including charting versions by Nathan Carter in 2012 and Darius Rucker in 2013.
"Candy" is a song by Ash, released as the fourth single from their album Free All Angels on 1 October 2001. It was released as a single CD as a 7-inch vinyl, as well as on DVD format. Candy performed only slightly better than previous single "Sometimes", reaching number 20 on the UK Singles Chart and number 25 in Ireland.
"There's a Star" is a song by Ash, released as the fifth single from their album Free All Angels, on 31 December 2001. It was released as a single CD as a 7-inch vinyl record and on DVD. "There's a Star" was a surprise hit for the band, reaching number 13 on the UK Singles Chart and giving them one of their best-selling singles, even though the single was deleted after one week. The song also reached number 38 in Ireland.

Their second album Music for the People (2008) went to Number 2 on the UK Albums Chart. Streets in the Sky, their third studio album, was released on 21 May 2012 and was also their third UK top 10 album. Their fourth studio album, It's Automatic, was released on 9 October 2015. After disbanding in 2016, the band reunited in 2022 for two reunion shows in their hometown of Coventry and a UK tour.

Following the departure of guitarist Charlotte Hatherley in early 2006, the band began recording their next album in New York City at Bang Studios, which they had leased from a friend of a friend. Frontman Tim Wheeler produced the recordings, with bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer McMurray acting as associate producers. Described as a pop and power pop album, Twilight of the Innocents placed emphasis on Hamilton's bass parts.
Kablammo! is the sixth studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 25 May 2015, through Earmusic. During 2009 and 2010, the band released a collection of singles as part of the A–Z Series; in the years following, frontman Tim Wheeler re-thought his stance on albums. Between December 2014 and February 2015, the band recorded their next album at Atomic Heart Studios in New York City, with them and Claudius Mittendorfer co-producing the sessions. Described as a pop rock and power pop release, Kablammo! attempted to capture the live sound of the band.
Islands is the seventh studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 18 May 2018, through Infectious Music and BMG. Following the touring cycle for their previous album Kablammo! (2015), frontman Tim Wheeler was going through a break-up, and travelled around the world in attempt to isolate himself. While traveling, he wrote multiple songs in each location. Ash reconvened and began recording their next album at Atom Heart Studios in New York City, with Wheeler acting as the main producer. Described as a power pop album, Islands drew comparison to the Beach Boys, the Ramones, and the Undertones.
