Meltdown is the fourth studio album to be recorded by the Northern Irish rock band Ash. The album was released on 17 May 2004 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Following the success of their third studio album Free All Angels (2001), Ash debuted several new songs while touring throughout 2003. By October that year, they had travelled to Los Angeles, California, to record a follow-up album, which was co-produced by Nick Raskulinecz and the band. Recording sessions were held at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and at Chalice Studios, Hollywood. Meltdown, which is described as a hard rock album, drew comparisons to the work of The Smashing Pumpkins and critics said the guitar work resembles that of Black Sabbath and Metallica.
The album's lead single "Clones" was released in late February 2004, coinciding with a European tour and a UK club tour. The second single "Orpheus" was released in May to accompany another UK tour. "Starcrossed" was the third single; it was released that July. During the next few months, Ash appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, embarked on a European tour, and supported the Darkness on their UK tour. With the release of the fourth single "Renegade Cavalcade" in December, the band twice toured Japan and the US; the second stint coincided with the release of the fifth single "Meltdown" in May 2005.
Meltdown received generally positive reviews from music critics, some of whom commented on the band members' musicianship. The album peaked at number five in the UK and Scotland, and at number six in Ireland. It also charted in Australia, Austria, Germany, and Norway. Meltdown was certified gold in the UK. All of the singles except for "Meltdown" reached the top 40 in the UK and Ireland; "Clones" was the best-selling single, peaking at number 12 in Ireland.
In April 2001, Ash released their third studio album Free All Angels , [1] which was a commercial success, saving the band from the brink of bankruptcy. It reached number one in the UK and spawned five UK top 40 singles. [2] As early as August 2001, the band were pondering what to do for their next album. [3] When touring the US, they listened to a lot of rock radio. [4] Frontman Tim Wheeler wanted the follow-up to be a heavy rock album with similarities to Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction (1987) and Nirvana's Nevermind (1991). [5] In September 2002, Ash released their first compilation album Intergalactic Sonic 7″s, [6] which they promoted with a three-month supporting US tour with Saves the Day. [7] Wheeler wrote 14 new songs after attending a February 2003 peace march. [8]
In March 2003, Wheeler told the NME he wanted to experiment with electronic music for the band's next album after using computers to score a short film. [9] In May and June 2003, Ash embarked on their first headlining US tour in five years. [10] Throughout the year, the band debuted several new songs. [2] In October, Ash went to Los Angeles, California, to record their next album, staying at Julia Roberts' former home in Beverly Hills. [11] Recording sessions were held at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and at Chalice Studios in Hollywood; recordings were co-produced by Ash and Nick Raskulinecz. [12] Ash worked with Raskulinecz at the recommendation of Andy Gill from Gang of Four, who told Wheeler he "got the best drum sound he's ever heard" from using Raskulinecz. [11]
The band also chose to work with Nick Raskulinecz because they wanted the album to have an American sound to it; according to Wheeler, American-made albums "sound better sonically", with "better engineering, better studios, so we wanted to check it out firsthand." [13] Wheeler said they recorded guitar, vocals, drums and bass in that order, which contrasted with their usual method of recording bass and drums first. [14] Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl visited the studio a few times during the recording but the band refrained from asking him to play on any recordings; Wheeler said; "There's a whole bunch of people we could have called, but we just want to get our band's sound on record". [11] Despite planning to have finished by November, the sessions continued until January 2004. [2] [11] Rich Costey mixed the recordings at Cello Studios, also in Hollywood, with assistance from Claudius Mittendorfer. Howie Weinberg mastered the album at Masterdisk. [12]
Meltdown has been described as a hard rock album [15] [16] that has influences from metal [17] and has been compared with the works of Smashing Pumpkins. [18] The guitar work throughout the album is similar to that of Black Sabbath and Metallica, and includes numerous solos played by Ash's guitarist Charlotte Hatherley. [19] [20] Meltdown is a departure from the pop punk style of Free All Angels, and is the band's heaviest-sounding release. [21] [22] Discussing the album's title, Wheeler said; "Why? Cos it's a meltdown. A full-on rock monster. A real face-melter. It'll tear your face off." [23] Wheeler wrote all of the songs except "Meltdown" – which he co-wrote with Hatherley – and "Out of the Blue", which he co-wrote with bassist Mark Hamilton. [12] Dracula is a reoccurring lyrical theme on the album. [19]
The opening track "Meltdown" is a political piece that channels the sound of AC/DC and Foo Fighters. [20] [24] Wheeler wrote it after witnessing a peace demonstration and Hatherley wrote the middle eight guitar riff. [25] [26] "Orpheus" switches between indie pop and heavy rock, and the verses include Wheeler's 1970s metal-style guitar riffs. [24] [27] Wheeler said the lyrics were taken from the eponymous Greek myth and is about the death of his friend's mother. [28] "Evil Eye" is a slower track on which Wheeler and Hatherley trade vocals that tells the story of a female suitor. [19] [29] It features a backwards message that says "She's giving me the Evil Eye. Suck Satan's cock." [30] Wheeler said "Clones" is about the homogenization of mankind, and is "a rant about some person who's let you down, a person you thought was different and they turn out to be the same as everyone else". [11] The song has an instrumental break section that was influenced by the works of Rage Against the Machine. [31]
"Starcrossed" is a string-led power ballad that is reminiscent of the material on Free All Angels. [24] [32] It re-tells the story of Romeo and Juliet . [19] "Out of the Blue" evokes "Song 2" (1997) by Blur and "Surf Wax America" (1994) by Weezer. [33] [34] Wheeler said the final version of "Out of the Blue" is the result of merging two separate songs. [35] "Renegade Cavalcade" features staccato guitar parts during the verses. [24] "Detonator" utilizes the talking guitar in vein of Peter Frampton during the verse sections; it is followed by the Foo Fighters-esque "On a Wave". [5] [36] "Won't Be Saved" is similar to the band's earlier material and was nearly left off the final version of the album but the band's agent persuaded them to keep it. [31] [37] "Vampire Love", which has Placebo-like lyrics and a cello part played by Oli Kraus, closes the album. [18] [12]
On 29 January 2004, Meltdown was announced for release later that year. [23] "Clones" was released as the album's lead single on 25 February as a download-only single. [38] The song's music video, which was filmed in the basement of a house in London, was directed by Jeff T. Thomas and premiered on MTV2 on 26 February. [39] [40] The band's US label Kinetic Records was dissolved on 26 March; the band's manager was in talks in an attempt to release the album in that territory later in the year. [41] On 3 May, "Orpheus" was released as a single; the CD version includes "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" (with Chris Martin of Coldplay) and "Tinsel Town". [41] [27]
Meltdown was released through Infectious Records and Home Grown on 17 May 2004. [42] The album's cover shows a tattoo-styled phoenix rising from flames. Its booklet features liner notes written by author JT LeRoy. [19] A special-edition double CD version, the second disk containing live recordings from Ash's UK tour earlier in the year, was released in the UK. [41] Two versions were released in Japan; one that added "Tinsel Town" and "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" to the main album and the other added extra live recordings to the UK special-edition live disc. Ash promoted the UK release with a series of in-store signings. [45] "Starcrossed" was released as a single on 19 July 2004; the CD version includes "Cool It down" and "Solace". [41] [46] The song's music video is a homage to Romeo + Juliet (1996) and was filmed in a church in Bucharest, Romania. [47] "Renegade Cavalcade" was released as a single on 6 December 2004; the CD version includes "We Don't Care" and the 7" vinyl version includes "Shockwave". [48] [49] [50] The song was initially planned for released in November but was postponed because in Ash's absence, their record label made a video for it, which the band disliked. [51] A second video showcasing a performance of the band was made. [52]
On 8 February 2005, Ash released an Extended Play (EP) called Commando, which includes "Meltdown", "Clones", "Evil Eye", and "Tinstle Town". [41] Meltdown was released in the US on 8 March through the label Record Collection to coincide with the band's US tour. [53] The US version includes the bonus tracks "Shockwave", "Solace", and "Cool It Down", as well as a DVD of music videos. [54] The title-track "Meltdown" was released to American radio stations on 24 May. [55]
"Orpheus", "Clones", and "Starcrossed" were included on Ash's second compilation album The Best of Ash (2011). [56] "Orpheus" and "Clones" were released on 7" vinyl as part of '94–'04 The 7" Singles Box Set (2019). [57] "Orpheus", "Clones", and "Starcrossed" were also included on the band's third compilation album Teenage Wildlife: 25 Years of Ash (2020). [58] Meltdown was reissued on CD through BMG in 2018. In February and March 2004, Ash embarked on a tour of Europe and then a club tour of the UK. [60] [61] The following month, the band appeared at the Skate and Surf Festival, and headlined BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. [62] [63] On 2 May, the band headlined one of the stages at the Coachella Festival. [41] In May and June, Ash went on another UK tour with support from Saves the Day and The Crimea. [64] [65] In August, the band appeared at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, [41] and in October and November, they again toured Europe. [41] Ash supported the Darkness' arena tour in December. [66]
At the start of 2005, Ash toured Japan, [67] and in March and April that year, they embarked on a headlining US tour with support from the Bravery. [68] While touring the US in June, the band were travelling to San Francisco when their bus caught fire; while they waited on the roadside for a new bus, the band received a call telling them the replacement bus had also caught fire. Ash drove themselves to a show in a van and borrowed equipment from The Bravery. [69] In July, the band supported U2 for three shows in Europe. [41]

Meltdown received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, the album received an average score of 78 based on 16 reviews. [70]
AllMusic reviewer Jason Damas wrote Meltdown is "burst[ing] with the hooks and little musical flourishes that have made the more mature Ash records such a treat" with minimal "meandering malaise" that plagues the band's second album, Nu-Clear Sounds (1998). He added it is a "surprisingly strong and assured record" that would enhance the band's legacy. [24] Yahoo! Launch writer Emma Morgan said the album "sounds exactly like what it is – a post-pubescent take" on the band's debut studio album 1977 (1996). She also called the album a "sturdy, well-written and ... mature addition to Ash's enduring and near-essential canon". [19] JR of IGN said Meltdown is "every bit as good as you'd hoped it would be", providing "on enough levels to accept the invitation into your stereo ... and your brain". [34] Drowned in Sound founder Sean Adams called it a "combo of Ash of all ages ... This is the kinda rock record us malnourished Brits can be proud of. It's Ash being Ash". [33] Andrew Unterberger of Stylus Magazine said the album's metal influence delivers "enough to give the album a bit of personality and distinctiveness without totally overpowering the band's signature sound". Entertainment.ie reviewer Andrew Lynch wrote Meltdown is "by far the heaviest-sounding album they've made to date, sometimes a bit too heavy for Tim Wheeler's slightly weedy voice". He added, "for all the bulldozer riffs and ferocious guitar solos on display here, the superb melodies prove that they're still just a great pop band at heart". [22] Mikael Wood of The Boston Phoenix said the band "punch up the guitars and drums until they threaten to drown out Wheeler’s voice altogether, and the thick, chewy distortion is a return to the days of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins". [71] Pitchfork contributor Jason Crock noted while the album "rock[s] harder, and with more snarl" than the band's past works, they "still can't help but reveal their melodic sweet tooth". [18] PopMatters ' Adrien Begrand said the album is "slightly more consistent" than the band's previous one, highlighting Hatherley's talents as a guitarist and her vocals. [20] The Guardian writer Steve Pill said the album is "a festival set list in waiting ... this may be the first rock album of the year you can sing in the shower and make a better hash of". [31] Kaj Roth of Melodic wrote the band "cranked up the volume to 11 and then just rocked", and called it one of the better albums of the year as well as "one of the most fun to listen to". [21]
Meltdown entered the charts at number five in the UK, [72] number five in Scotland, [73] and number six in Ireland. [74] It reached number 25 in Norway, [75] number 65 in Germany, [76] number 78 in Austria, [77] and number 87 in Australia. [78] The album was later certified gold in the UK, and ranked at number 173 on the UK year-end chart. [79] [80] "Clones" charted at number 12 in Ireland; "Orpheus" charted at number 13 in the UK, and number 17 in Ireland; and "Starcrossed" charted at number 19 in Ireland and number 22 in the UK. 1977 is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 6 May 1996 by Home Grown and Infectious Records, with whom the band had signed following the release of several demo tapes. Ash released the mini-album Trailer in 1994, and followed it with three singles "Kung Fu", "Girl from Mars", and "Angel Interceptor", all of which would reappear on 1977. Ash recorded their debut album with producer Owen Morris at Rockfield Studios in Wales in early 1996. Described as a Britpop, power pop and garage rock album, 1977 drew comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth.

Hope Is Important is the debut studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released 26 October 1998 through Food Records. After finalizing their line-up and releasing two singles in 1997, the band released their mini album Captain in early 1998. Afterwards, the band signed with Food Records, and recorded their debut album between February and June 1998 at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire and Westland Studios in Dublin with producer Paul Tipler. Described as a grunge and punk rock album, Hope Is Important was compared to Bleach (1989) by Nirvana.
Liquid Skin is the second album by English rock group Gomez, released on 13 September 1999 by Hut Records. Following the release of their debut studio album Bring It On (1998), the band began recording their follow-up between August 1998 and June 1999 at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, and Abbey Road Studios in London. Gomez were allowed to self-produce the sessions after their label heard the strength of their demos. Described as a blues rock album, Liquid Skin was compared to the work of Beck, the Grateful Dead, and Pearl Jam.
Love Is Here is the debut studio album by rock band Starsailor, released on 8 October 2001 by Chrysalis Records. After finalising their line-up, a positive review from NME started a bidding war between record labels that eventually saw the band sign to EMI. Following the making of some demos, "Fever" and "Good Souls" were released as singles on 4 February 2001 and 23 April 2001, respectively. The band recorded their debut album at Rockfield Studios with producer Steve Osborne over the course of six weeks. Love Is Here features acoustic guitars accompanied by gentle piano chords, earning it comparisons to the albums Parachutes (2000) by Coldplay, and The Invisible Band (2001) by Travis.
Warnings/Promises is the fourth studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released on 7 March 2005 by Parlophone. Following the release of their third studio album The Remote Part (2002), Gavin Fox replaced bassist Bob Fairfoull, and touring guitarist Allan Stewart became a permanent member. They spent the majority of 2003 writing material, before traveling to Malmö, Sweden to record at Tambourine Studios with producer Dave Eringa. After finishing five tracks, they went to Los Angeles to work at Sunset Sound Recorders with producer Tony Hoffer. Due to the laidback nature of the sessions, the band had to re-record everything; recording concluded in October 2004. Described as an college rock and folk rock album, Warnings/Promises emphasized more acoustic instrumentation than its predecessor.
Free All Angels is the third studio album to be recorded by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 23 April 2001 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Due to the mixed reaction to the band's second studio album Nu-Clear Sounds (1998), frontman Tim Wheeler suffered from depression. He went to his parents' house in Northern Ireland to write material for the band's next album. Free All Angels was co-produced by the band and Owen Morris, and recording sessions were held at El Cortijo in Puerto Banús, Spain, then moved to The Wool Hall in Beckington and RAK Studios in London. The album was described as pop punk, power pop and punk rock, and drew comparisons to the works of China Drum, Compulsion, Hüsker Dü, and the Replacements.
Strip-mine is the second studio album by English rock band James. It was released on 26 September 1988, through Sire and Blanco y Negro Records. After minimal touring and lack of success for their debut studio album Stutter (1986), the label was apprehensive about letting them record another album. Sessions for it were held in early 1987 at Rockfield Studios with Hugh Jones producing the majority of the album, except for "Are You Ready", which produced by Steve Power and Steve Lovell. After the recording, the release was delayed a number of times, until it was eventually remixed early the following year at London's Battery Studios. Described as a folk-pop album, the songs on Strip-mine tackled the topics of misinformation, addiction, and human mortality.
Gold Mother is the third studio album by English rock band James. It was released on 4 June 1990 on Fontana Records. With the addition of drummer David Baynton-Power, violinist/guitarist Saul Davies, and keyboardist Mark Hunter, James released the single "Sit Down" in June 1989, before going to record their next album. Sessions were held at Out of the Blue in Manchester, The Windings in Wrexham, Wales, with three band members and Nick Garside producing. Described as an arena rock and indie rock album, Gold Mother was compared to the likes of U2 and the Waterboys.
Nu-Clear Sounds is the second studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 5 October 1998, through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Following the release of the band's debut studio album, 1977 (1996), guitarist Charlotte Hatherley became a member. They wrote new material at a farmhouse, before going to Wales to record their next album at Rockfield Studios. With additional sessions held at the Astoria in London, Ash produced the proceedings alongside Chris Kimsey and Owen Morris. A garage rock record, the New York Dolls, the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground inspired the album.
Grey Will Fade is the debut studio album by English musician Charlotte Hatherley, the guitarist for Ash, released by Double Dragon Music on 16 August 2004. Spurred on by the positive response to "Grey Will Fade", which appeared as a B-side to Ash's single "There's a Star" (2001), Hatherley set about recording her solo album. Enlisting the help of Eric Drew Feldman, the sessions for the album were happening concurrently in Los Angeles, California, at Wild Hamster, while Ash was recording their album Meltdown (2004). Described as a pop punk and power pop record, Hatherley's vocals on Grey Will Fade earned her comparisons to Björk, Tanya Donelly, and PJ Harvey.
"A Life Less Ordinary" was a non-album single released by the band Ash on 13 October 1997. It was the title track of the film of the same name, "A Life Less Ordinary", starring Cameron Diaz and Ewan McGregor, and also appeared on the film's soundtrack. The single was released in three formats: CD, 7-inch vinyl, and cassette. The limited-edition 7-inch was printed on blue vinyl. The song peaked at number ten on the UK Singles Chart.
The Deep Blue is the second studio album by English musician Charlotte Hatherley, released on 5 March 2007 under Hatherley's own label Little Sister Records. She left Ash in January 2006; she visited Australia, where she stayed for two months, and wrote 17 new songs. After contacting Eric Drew Feldman, recording sessions were held at The Red House Studio in Senigallia, Italy, and Miloco Studios in London, with Feldman, Rob Ellis and Hatherley acting as producers. Described as a post-punk and power pop album, The Deep Blue saw Hatherley's guitarwork being sidestepped, allowing more of an emphasis on other instruments, such as bass, strings, and piano.
"Starcrossed" is the third single from the Meltdown album by the band Ash. It was released as a single on 19 July 2004 as a CD and a gatefold 7-inch vinyl, as well as a DVD format and various promo copies. "Starcrossed" was A-listed on BBC Radio 1 and was expected to be a major hit for the band, but it only made it to number 22 on the UK Singles Chart and number 43 in Ireland. However, the song was successful in the long run for the band and is considered one of their most popular songs.
Twilight of the Innocents is the fifth studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 2 July 2007, through Infectious Records. Following the departure of guitarist Charlotte Hatherley in early 2006, the band began recording their next album in New York City at Bang Studios, which they had leased from a friend of a friend. Frontman Tim Wheeler produced the recordings, with bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer McMurray acting as associate producers. Described as a pop and power pop album, Twilight of the Innocents placed emphasis on Hamilton's bass parts.
Charlotte Franklin Hatherley is an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and soundtrack composer. She initially came to prominence as guitarist and backing vocalist for alternative rock band Ash.
New Worlds is the third studio album by British musician Charlotte Hatherley, released on 16 October 2009 through her own label Little Sister Records. Following the release of her second studio album The Deep Blue in early 2007, Hatherley had started writing material for its follow-up in August of that year. Enlisting the help of producers Luke Smith and Adem, Hatherley recorded the album in one week at The Pool in London. Described as an indie rock, new wave, and pop release, New Worlds took inspiration from painters, and a book by Alex Ross.
The Best of Ash is the second greatest hits album by the band Ash, released on 17 October 2011.
Kablammo! is the sixth studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 25 May 2015, through Earmusic. During 2009 and 2010, the band released a collection of singles as part of the A–Z Series; in the years following, frontman Tim Wheeler re-thought his stance on albums. Between December 2014 and February 2015, the band recorded their next album at Atomic Heart Studios in New York City, with them and Claudius Mittendorfer co-producing the sessions. Described as a pop rock and power pop release, Kablammo! attempted to capture the live sound of the band.
Islands is the seventh studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 18 May 2018, through Infectious Music and BMG. Following the touring cycle for their previous album Kablammo! (2015), frontman Tim Wheeler was going through a break-up, and travelled around the world in attempt to isolate himself. While traveling, he wrote multiple songs in each location. Ash reconvened and began recording their next album at Atom Heart Studios in New York City, with Wheeler acting as the main producer. Described as a power pop album, Islands drew comparison to the Beach Boys, the Ramones, and the Undertones.
