M. L. Tahaliyani is the Lokayukta of Maharashtra and is a retired Judge of the Bombay High Court. [1] Justice Tahaliyani presided over high-profile cases including the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the Adarsh Housing Society scam. [2]
Born on 23 December 1953,in Sardarshahar,Rajasthan,Tahaliyani began his career as a lawyer in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra in 1975. After a few years he was appointed as an assistant public prosecutor in the Naxal effected area of Gadchiroli,Sironcha,Desaiganj and Warora. After spending several years as a public prosecutor he was then appointed as a Metropolitan Magistrate in 1987. Tahaliyani was appointed the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in 1994 and later appointed the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in 1997. [3] In 2010 he was appointed as a Principal Judge to the Bombay City Civil Court and in that same year while presiding over the 2008 Mumbai attacks case he pronounced the death penalty to Ajmal Kasab on terrorism related charges, [4] The judgement was later confirmed by the Bombay High Court and upheld by the Supreme Court of India after which Kasab was hanged at the Yerawada Central Jail,Pune on 21 November 2012. [5] The following year Tahaliyani was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court and while presiding over the Adarsh Housing Society scam refused to give any relief to the former Chief minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan in that case. [6] After his retirement from the bench,he was appointed Lokayukta of Maharashtra. Justice Tahaliyani succeeds Justice P.B. Gaikwad whose term as Lokayukta ended on 1 July 2014. Tahaliyani was sworn-in as the Lokayukta by Maharashtra Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao on 25 August 2015. [7] [8]

The Lokayukta is the Indian Parliamentary Ombudsman,executed into power,through and for,each of the State Governments of India. It is brought into effect in a state after passing the Lokayukta Act in the respective state legislature,and a person of reputable background is nominated for the post. The post was created to quickly address the working of the government or its administration. Once appointed,Lokayukta cannot be dismissed or transferred by the government,and can only be removed by passing an impeachment motion by the state assembly.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was a Pakistani terrorist and a member of the Islamist terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba through which he took part in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks in Maharashtra,India. Kasab,alongside fellow Lashkar-e-Taiba recruit Ismail Khan,killed 72 people during the attacks,most of them at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Kasab was the only attacker who was apprehended alive by the police.
Ashok Shankarrao Chavan is an Indian politician from Maharashtra. He is the son of the late former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan. He was one of the most influential leaders of Indian National Congress in Maharashtra but joined Bhartiya Janata Party on 13 February 2024. He has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra state from 8 December 2008 to 9 November 2010. Also,he has served as Minister for Cultural Affairs,Industries,Mines and Protocol in the Vilasrao Deshmukh government and he is also the former PWD Minister of Maharashtra.

Devika Rotawan is a survivor of the 2008 Mumbai attacks and a key witness who identified Ajmal Kasab during trial as a perpetrator of the attack. She was nine years old when she was shot in the leg during the attack in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus,Mumbai.

Justice Abhay Mahadeo Thipsay is a retired judge of the Bombay High Court and the Allahabad High Court.
