MS Jubilee (also known as Pacific Sun and Henna) was a cruise ship that was originally built for Carnival Cruise Line. She was the second of three ships to be built for Carnival's Holiday class. She was last owned by the Chinese company HNA Cruise Company, Limited, for service in the West Pacific region. The ship was retired and scrapped in 2017.

History

Carnival Cruise Line

Jubilee was built in 1986 by Kockums Varv, Malmö, Sweden, for Carnival Cruise Line, along with near-sister ship Celebration . The other near-sister ship of the class, Holiday , was built earlier by Aalborg Værft in Aalborg, Denmark.

For many years, Jubilee sailed from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera, including Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan. [6] [7] In 1989, she sailed from Vancouver to Alaska and Hawaii, and in later years, from Miami to the Caribbean [8] and Miami to San Diego via the Panama Canal. [9] Her final homeport was Jacksonville, Florida. The last passenger cruise with Carnival took place on August 26, 2004, to Nassau and Freeport, Bahamas. [10]

P&O Cruises

In 2004, the vessel was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia and renamed Pacific Sun. She arrived in Australia on 9 November 2004 and began year-round cruises from Sydney to the South Pacific and Tropical North Queensland. From late 2007, she was based in Brisbane and was then the largest year-round liner to be based in Queensland. After receiving a multimillion-dollar makeover, she sailed in all-white colours, like P&O's other ships, along with new amenities. [11] Pacific Sun was the only ship of three siblings (with Grand Celebration and Grand Holiday) whose funnel was changed upon leaving Carnival Cruise Lines; her sister's funnels were simply repainted, while Sun had both Carnival's iconic wings and a part of its shielding removed. Carnival's first newbuilt ship, the slightly older Tropicale (now MS Ocean Dream), also had her Carnival funnel replaced with Costa Cruises's round stove-pipe funnel, which she retained until the end of her career.

In late July 2008, 42 passengers were injured in a storm. [12] The event became widely known when video footage was posted on the internet two years later. [13]

On 18 December 2011, P&O announced that Pacific Sun would leave its fleet in July 2012. [14] Her farewell cruise was an 8-day roundtrip from Portside Wharf in Brisbane, Australia, stopping at Nouméa, Lifou, in New Caledonia, and Port Vila, Vanuatu, with three days at sea. Pacific Sun had completed between 314 and 332 cruises, with 2,707 nights at sea and an estimated 586,000 passengers carried. [5]

HNA Cruises

The ship was then sold to Chinese interests under the newly formed cruise line, HNA Cruises. On 13 September 2012, the ship was renamed Henna. The ship made her maiden voyage under Chinese ownership on 26 January 2013 from Sanya to Vietnam. At that time, the ship was the first luxury cruise liner in mainland China at over 47,000 tons with 739 passenger cabins and a maximum passenger capacity of 1,965. She had nine suites, 432 ocean-view staterooms, and 298 interior staterooms. [15] During its operation with HNA Cruises, the ship sailed to locations in Vietnam and in South Korea. [15] [16]

In September 2013 the ship was detained at the South Korean island of Jeju after Chinese shipping service company Jiangsu Shagang International applied for a seizure. After several days stuck on board, the 1,659 passengers were flown home via HNA Group's China Hainan Airlines. [17]

In November 2015, HNA shut down its cruise ship operation after three years of losses in the region. Since the Henna's last cruise with HNA, she was laid up and was placed for sale for $35 million USD. [18] [19]

Demise

With there being no interested buyers, Henna was sold for scrapping in Alang, India. She was photographed there, renamed as the Hen, on 1 May 2017. [20] [21] By late June, scrapping began and was complete by the end of 2017. [22]

<i>Karnika</i> Cruise ship operated by Jalesh Cruises

Pacific Jewel was a cruise ship. Originally debuting in 1990, Pacific Jewel has operated for numerous cruise lines throughout her history. She debuted as Crown Princess for Princess Cruises in 1990 before being transferred to A'Rosa Cruises as A'Rosa Blu in 2002. In 2004, she was transferred to AIDA Cruises as AIDAblu. In 2007, she was transferred to Ocean Village as Ocean Village Two. In 2009, she was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia as Pacific Jewel. In 2018, she was sold to Jalesh Cruises and renamed Karnika, debuting in 2019. Jalesh Cruises ceased operating in October 2020. She was sold for scrap in Alang, India in 2020.

<i>Celestyal Journey</i> Cruise ship launched in 1994

Celestyal Journey is a cruise ship completed in 1994 and initially sailed for Holland America Line as Ryndam. After nine years she was transferred within the Carnival group to P&O Cruises Australia and renamed Pacific Aria. Plans that she would sail for Cruise & Maritime Voyages as Ida Pfeiffer from 2021 were abandoned, and P&O sold her instead in 2020 to Seajets, who laid her up as Aegean Goddess. In 2023 she was resold to Celestyal Cruises and renamed Celestyal Journey. In December 2023, the Celestyal Journey was chartered by German-based cruise line, Phoenix Reisen. The ship was then used for the first section of the company's world voyage, which was originally intended for MS Amera, one of Phoenix Reisen's other ships, who was held up at the shipyard.

MS <i>Volendam</i> Rotterdam-class cruise ship

MS Volendam is a Rotterdam-class (R-class) cruise ship belonging to Holland America Line. She was built in 1999 and sails out of Australia, Asia, and conducts cruises of the Inside Passage, traversing British Columbia and Alaska. She is the third ship in the fleet with that name, after SS Volendam (1922–1952) and SS Volendam (1972–1984).

<i>Carnival Freedom</i> Conquest-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Freedom is a Conquest-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. She is the 22nd operating vessel in the fleet, and the last of the Conquest-class ships. The ship was built as part of a four-ship deal with Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard and was launched in Venice, Italy on April 28, 2006. She was delivered to Carnival on February 28, 2007.

MS <i>Holiday</i>

MS Holiday was a Holiday-class cruise ship, which was formerly owned by Carnival Cruise Line as the Holiday and Ibero Cruises as the Grand Holiday. She last sailed for Cruise & Maritime Voyages from Spring 2015 to 2020 as the Magellan until Cruise & Maritime Voyages ceased operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was then sold at auction and was scrapped at Alang, India in early 2021.

RMS <i>Empress of Britain</i> (1955)

RMS Empress of Britain was a transatlantic ocean liner built by Fairfield Shipbuilding at Govan on the Clyde in Scotland in 1955-1956 for Canadian Pacific Steamships (CP). This ship — the third of three CP vessels to be named Empress of Britain — regularly traversed the trans-Atlantic route between Canada and Europe until 1964, completing 123 voyages under the Canadian Pacific flag.

MS <i>Tropicale</i> Cruise ship built 1982

MS Tropicale was a cruise ship that entered service in 1982, and was one of the pioneering cruise ships in the modernization of the cruise industry. She was Carnival Cruises Line's first newly built ship, initially operating mainly in the Mexican Riviera and the Caribbean.

MV <i>Columbus</i> Cruise ship

MV Columbus was a cruise ship. She was built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, at their shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, and launched in 1988 as Sitmar Fair Majesty. Originally ordered for Sitmar Cruises, with the merger of Sitmar Cruises into Princess, she first entered service with Princess Cruises as Star Princess in 1989. From 1997 to 2003, she served in the P&O Cruises fleet as MVArcadia. She was renamed Ocean Village in 2003 when the brand was established. Ocean Village was the sole cruise ship of the Ocean Village brand after the Ocean Village Two became the Pacific Jewel. In 2010 the Ocean Village brand ceased its operations and she was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia and renamed Pacific Pearl. She served in the P&O Cruises Australia fleet until 2017 when she was sold to Cruise & Maritime Voyages and renamed MV Columbus. Following CMV entering administration in 2020, the Ship was auctioned by CW Kellock & Co. in London on 12 October 2020, for US$5,321,000 to Marios Iliopoulos of Seajets, and some months later resold to scrap in Eleusis Bay. In 2021 she was sold for scrap in Alang, India where she will be beached and dismantled.

MV <i>Ocean Star Pacific</i> Cruise ship

MVNordic Prince was a cruise ship. She was built in 1971 by Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard, Finland for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and christened as MV Nordic Prince. She subsequently sailed under the names of Carousel, Aquamarine, and Arielle, prior to being renamed Ocean Star Pacific. IMO number: 7027411

<i>Holiday</i>-class cruise ship

The Holiday class was the first class of newbuilds for Carnival Cruise Line after their first newbuild, Tropicale, which was completed in 1982. The first ship in the class, the 46,052 gross-ton vessel Holiday, was completed in 1985. A second and slightly larger sister ship, Jubilee, was built in 1986 at 47,262 gross tons. The third and final ship, Celebration, was identical to Jubilee and completed in 1987. All were the biggest ships for Carnival until the Fantasy class was built.

RMS <i>Empress of Canada</i> (1960) US Cruise Ship built in 1960

RMS Empress of Canada was an ocean liner launched in 1960 and completed the following year by Vickers-Armstrongs of Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England for Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. This ship, the third CP vessel to be named Empress of Canada, regularly traversed the transatlantic route between Liverpool and Canada for the next decade. Although Canadian Pacific Railways was incorporated in Canada, the Atlantic liners were owned and operated by the British registered subsidiary Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. and were always British flagged and manned and therefore Empress of Canada was not the flagship of the Canadian Merchant Marine.

MV <i>Kungsholm</i> (1965) Ship

MV Kungsholm was built in 1966 by the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland as a combined ocean liner / cruise ship for the Swedish American Line. She was later rebuilt as a full-time cruise ship sailing under the names MVSea Princess, MVVictoria, MV Oceanic II. and MV Mona Lisa. In September 2010 she was retired from service as she did not fulfill requirements to SOLAS 2010, becoming the floating hotel Veronica, before being scrapped in 2016.

RMS <i>Carinthia</i> (1955)

RMS Carinthia was an ocean liner built in 1956 as one of the four Saxonia class ships. She sailed for Cunard Line from her completion until 1968 when she was sold to Sitmar Line, rebuilt into a full-time cruise ship and renamed SS Fairsea. She sailed with Sitmar until 1988, when Sitmar was sold to P&O. She was renamed SS Fair Princess and sailed for Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises until 2000. She was then sold to China Sea Cruises and renamed SS China Sea Discovery. In 2005 or 2006 she was scrapped in Alang, India.

MS <i>Italia</i> (1965)

MS Italia was a cruise ship built in Italy in 1967. She sailed in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Pacific under various names and operators, and was scrapped in May 2012.

MS <i>Celebration</i> Cruise ship

The Celebration was a cruise ship originally built for Carnival Cruise Line. She was the last of three ships to be built in Carnival's Holiday Class of cruise ships. She last sailed for Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line between 2015 and 2020.

<i>SS Brasil</i> (1957) Ocean liner

SS Brasil was an American built ocean liner launched at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1957. The ship was originally named Brasil for Moore-McCormack Lines, Inc.'s South American service, but was renamed a number of times. During its history the ship served as a cruise ship and later served in the Semester at Sea program as Universe Explorer. The ship was scrapped in Alang, India, in 2004 sailing under the name Universe for the final voyage.
