Carnival Luminosa (formerly Costa Luminosa) is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Originally built as the Costa Luminosa, the ship entered service on 5 May 2009. Her design is a hybrid, using elements of Spirit-class and Vista-class. A sister ship, Costa Deliziosa, was launched in February 2010 and is based on the same design. Costa Luminosa departed Civitavecchia, Italy on 3 June 2009, on her 13-night maiden voyage, with ports of call in Savona, Saint-Tropez, Barcelona, Lisbon, Le Havre and Amsterdam. [6]

On 14 June 2022, it was announced that Costa Luminosa would be transferred to the fleet of Carnival Cruise Line, receiving the name Carnival Luminosa. [7] She began sailing for Carnival in November 2022. [8]

Design and description

Costa Luminosa is the thirteenth ship of Costa Cruises, part of their five-ship expansion program, which includes Costa Pacifica, Costa Deliziosa, Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa. Costa Luminosa and her sister ship, Costa Deliziosa have a gross tonnage of 92,700 each and are 292 metres (958 ft 0 in) long. [9] Costa Luminosa and Costa Deliziosa pioneered in the introduction of a new vessel design, which is a hybrid; using design elements of the Spirit and Vista-class cruise ships.

The ship has 1,130 cabins, four dining areas, a theatre, a cinema and other passenger facilities. [10]

Construction and career

Costa Luminosa

Costa Luminosa and her sister ship, Costa Deliziosa were ordered from the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard on 12 June 2006. [11] The keel of Costa Luminosa was laid on 10 October 2007 in the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard at Venice. [9] She floated out of drydock on 30 June 2008 and completed her sea trials on 30 March 2009. [12] After 18 months, the ship was handed over to Costa Cruises on 1 May 2009. [1]

The christenings of Costa Luminosa, and the Concordia-class Costa Pacifica were held in Genoa on 5 June 2009. It was the first time that two cruise ships were simultaneously christened in Italy. The dual christening ceremony set a then Guinness World record in the category, "Most ships inaugurated in one day by one company". The two ships also launched simultaneously in their shipyard on 5 June 2008; Costa Luminosa in Marghera and Costa Pacifica in Sestri Ponente. [13] [14]

Costa Luminosa made her first on 5 May 2009, a 10-day cruise in the Eastern Mediterranean, departing Venice, with ports of call at Istanbul, Bari, Olympia, Rhodes, Smyrna, Mykonos and Athens. It was followed by mini cruises in Eastern Mediterranean, again departing Venice on 15 May 2009. Her second was on 19 May 2009. [15] In the summer of 2009, the ship offered 11 and 14-day cruises at the Baltic capitals, Norwegian fjords and the North Cape. [15]

During the 2009–2010 winter season, the ship operated in Dubai, offering seven-day cruises in the Persian Gulf with calls at Dubai, Muscat, Fujairah, Abu Dhabi, and Bahrain. [15] After the political problems in Bahrain, the company changed the itinerary removing Bahrain. [16]

Despite claims of sustainable practices by both Costa Cruises and its parent company Carnival, Sveriges Television reported in 2015 that Costa Luminosa dumped the toilet waste of its 3,200 passengers and crew in the sea, instead of taking use of harbour facilities, often provided free of charge by Baltic ports. The report calculated that more than 5,000,000 litres (1,100,000 imp gal; 1,300,000 US gal) of waste was dumped during a single cruise in the Baltic Sea. [17] The report did not suggest that the marine pollution regulations MARPOL 73/78 [18] were breached.

From 2017 every summer she sails on seven-night cruises to the Greek Islands. During the winter period Costa Luminosa goes on seven-night cruises in the Caribbean.

She spent her final season for Costa sailing seven-night cruises to the Greek Islands.[ citation needed ]

Transfer to Carnival Cruise Line

On 14 June 2022 it was announced that Costa Luminosa would be transferred to the fleet of Carnival Cruise Line in September 2022, receiving the name Carnival Luminosa. On 8 September 2022 Costa Luminosa was officially handed over to Carnival Cruise Line. [19] After a refit, the ship sailed to Brisbane, Australia to begin voyages that started on 6 November. [20]

Incidents

Coronavirus pandemic

On 29 February 2020, a 68-year-old Italian man in critical condition was transferred from Costa Luminosa to a hospital in the Cayman Islands due to heart issues. [21] On 12 March 2020, the Health Services Authority of the Cayman Islands announced that the man was their first confirmed coronavirus case. [22] [23] His death was announced two days later. [21] [24]

On 5 March 2020 the vessel left Fort Lauderdale for a transatlantic cruise. Two people disembarked with symptoms of the coronavirus in Puerto Rico. Subsequently, on 13 March 2020, it was confirmed to be due to COVID-19 – the first known cases in Puerto Rico. [25] One of the two persons died several days later. Because of the virus outbreak several sick passengers were left at Tenerife and passengers were placed under quarantine in their rooms. The ship was not allowed to dock in Spain. It docked at Marseille, France, discharging sick passengers who flew home distributing the virus, [24] and went to Savona where the rest of the passengers were disembarked on 23 March, many of them sick. [26] After the disembarkation at Marseille, French authorities confirmed 36 people with COVID-19 infection. [27] On 21 March local news in Puerto Rico reported the death of the quarantined Italian woman. [28] On 7 April, a Miami lawyer filed a lawsuit against Costa Cruises over mishandling and allowing passengers to sail aboard Costa Luminosa despite having flu-like symptoms. [29]

Goddess of the Night is a Destiny-class cruise ship owned by Seajets since 2023. Formerly operating as Costa Magica by Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc, the 102,784 GT vessel joined sister ship Costa Fortuna in 2004 and were referred together as Fortuna-class ships; together, they became the largest ships in the Costa fleet at her time of delivery. Costa Magica paid homage to some of the most famous destinations in Italy including Positano, Portofino, Bellagio, and Sicily, which were incorporated into her public areas and restaurants. 19 years after her debut, Costa sold Costa Magica to Greek/Cypriot ferry company Seajets in 2023 and she was subsequently renamed Mykonos Magic.

<i>Costa neoRomantica</i> Cruise ship

The MS Costa neoRomantica was a cruise ship completed for Costa Cruises in 1993 by Fincantieri in Italy as Costa Romantica, and a sister ship to Costa Classica. She was refurbished in 2003, renamed Costa neoRomantica in 2011, and from 2017 assigned to the Asian market. The ship was sold in 2020 to Celestyal Cruises as Celestyal Experience. She never operated for Celestyal and was sold again and renamed Antares Experience in September 2021, then beached for demolition at Gadani, Pakistan in December 2021.

Costa Pacifica Cruise ship

Costa Pacifica is a Concordia-class cruise ship for Costa Crociere. She was handed over to Costa Crociere on 29 May 2009. Her sister ships, Costa Concordia and Costa Serena, were launched in 2006 and in 2007, with Costa Favolosa and Costa Fascinosa launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Vista-class cruise ship (2002)

The Vista class is a class of Panamax-type cruise ships, built by Fincantieri Marghera shipyard, in Italy. Vista-class cruise ships are operated by Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, Cunard Line, Costa Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line. The ships are equipped with a diesel-electric power plant and an Azipod propulsion system. The ships are designed so that eighty-five percent of the staterooms have ocean views and sixty-seven percent have verandas; the extensive use of glass in the superstructure,, is also reflected in the Vista-class name.

<i>Dream</i>-class cruise ship

The Dream class is a class of cruise ships, operated by Carnival Cruise Lines and Costa Cruises. The lead vessel of the class, Carnival Dream, entered service in September 2009.

<i>Costa Deliziosa</i> Cruise ship

Costa Deliziosa is a cruise ship flagship operated by Costa Crociere. Ordered in 2007 as part of a five-ship expansion of the Costa Cruises Fleet, Costa Deliziosa was constructed by Fincantieri, launched in March 2009, and handed over to Costa Crociere in January 2010.

<i>Costa Favolosa</i> Concordia-class cruise ship

Costa Favolosa is a cruise ship ordered for Costa Crociere in October 2007. MS Koningsdam is a Pinnacle-class cruise ship operated by Holland America Line (HAL), a division of Carnival Corporation & plc. Koningsdam is the lead vessel of HAL's Pinnacle class, which includes Nieuw Statendam (2018) and Rotterdam (2021), all of which were built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. Two years after the first steel was cut in February 2014 to commence construction, she was delivered to HAL in March 2016 and began operating the following month. At 99,863 GT, she became the largest ship ever commissioned for HAL upon her delivery.

MS <i>Rotterdam</i> (2021) Cruise ship

MS Rotterdam is a Pinnacle-class cruise ship operated by Holland America Line (HAL), a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. Originally named Ryndam in development, she was renamed Rotterdam in July 2020 during construction to honor the name's legacy in the cruise line's history after six previous vessels in HAL's fleet bore the name. Rotterdam is the third of HAL's Pinnacle class in the fleet built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and follows older sister ships Koningsdam (2016) and Nieuw Statendam (2018). Her name, Nieuw Statendam, alludes to the five previous ships in HAL's fleet named Statendam. She is the second of three Pinnacle-class ships built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri after Koningsdam (2016) and before Rotterdam (2021). <i>Carnival Panorama</i> Vista-class cruise ship

Carnival Panorama is a Vista-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. After Carnival finalized the ship's order with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in December 2016, the vessel had her keel laid in January 2018. She was formally delivered in October 2019 as the last Vista-class vessel and as the flagship of the fleet; she has served in the latter role until the Mardi Gras debuted in 2021. Originally debuting as Costa Firenze for sister brand Costa Cruises, she was initially commissioned for the Chinese market but was never deployed to Asia following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cruise travel in China. Named after Florence, the 135,156 gross tonnage (GT)-vessel was constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Marghera and delivered in December 2020.
