Maa Vindhyavasini University (MVVU) is a state university in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established under the Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2023. The university has jurisdiction over higher education institutions in the Mirzapur division, specifically within the districts of Mirzapur, Bhadohi, and Sonbhadra. [1]

It was formed by bifurcating the jurisdiction of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKVP), Varanasi.

History

Legislation and establishment

The university was created as part of a state government initiative to establish a state university in each administrative division of Uttar Pradesh. On 31 October 2023, the state cabinet approved the amendment of the Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act, 1973, which authorized the creation of Maa Vindhyavasini University alongside universities in the Devipatan and Moradabad divisions. Administration

In November 2024, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, appointed Shobha Gaur as the first Vice-Chancellor. Gaur formerly served as the Dean of Education at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University. [3] The academic session for the university began in July 2025. [4]

Campus

The university is located in Deori Kala village, Marihan Tehsil, approximately 20 kilometers from the Mirzapur district headquarters. The Government of Uttar Pradesh allocated 35 hectares (86 acres) of land for campus. [5]
