Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University (KMCLU), formerly Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University (KMCUAFU) is a state university [1] based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Established in 2009, the university is named after Sufi saint Mu'in al-Din Chishti.
The university was established in 2009 as "Uttar Pradesh Arabi Pharsi University", under the Uttar Pradesh Arabi Pharsi University Act, 2009. [2] In 2010 the act was repealed and the university was reintroduced as "Uttar Pradesh Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University" under Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2010. [3] It was renamed "Manyavar Shri Kanshi Ram Ji Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University" in 2011 under Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2011, to honor the politician and social reformer Kanshi Ram. [3] About a year later it was renamed again "Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University" in 2012, under Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2012, in honor of Sufi saint Mu'in al-Din Chishti. [3] In 2020, it was renamed a final time "Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University" under Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2020. [4]
Anis Ansari was appointed the founder vice-chancellor (VC) of the university in April 2010. [5] Mahrukh Mirza was appointed VC in October 2017. [6] After vacating the position in October 2020, in January 2021, after all candidates for the VC position have been rejected, Vinay Kumar Pathak was appointed VC as an additional charge. [7] Anil Kumar Shukla was appointed VC in April 2021. [8] In January 2022, Alok Kumar Rai, VC of Lucknow University, was appointed VC as KMCLU as an additional charge. [9]
The Chishti order is a Sufi order of Sunni Islam named after the town of Chisht where it was initiated by Abu Ishaq Shami. The order was brought to South Asia by Mu'in al-Din Chishti in the city of Ajmer.
The Bahujan Samaj Party is a political party in India that was formed to represent Bahujans, referring to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBC), along with religious minorities. Mu'in al-Din Hasan Chishti Sijzi, known reverentially as Khawaja Gharib Nawaz, was a Persian Islamic scholar and mystic from Sistan, who eventually ended up settling in the Indian subcontinent in the early 13th-century, where he promulgated the Chishtiyya order of Sunni mysticism. This particular Tariqa (order) became the dominant Islamic spiritual order in medieval India. Most of the Indian Sunni saints are Chishti in their affiliation, including Nizamuddin Awliya and Amir Khusrow.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), before 2015 known as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), is a public collegiate university in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University through the Government of Uttar Pradesh on 8 May 2000. To reduce workload and to ensure proper management, the university was bifurcated into separate universities, Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU), with effect from 1 May 2010. In 2013, as a new government came into power, the university was formed again by combining the two on 5 January 2013.
Nasiruddin Mahmud Chirag-Dehlavi was a 14th-century mystic-poet and a Sufi saint of the Chishti Order. He was a disciple of Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya, and later his successor. He was the last important Sufi of the Chishti Order from Delhi.
Pir Meher Ali Shah, was a Punjabi Muslim Sufi scholar and mystic poet from Punjab, British India. Belonging to the Chishti order, he is known as a Hanafi scholar who led the anti-Ahmadiyya movement. He has served as vice chancellor of Uttarakhand Open University (UOU) from 25 November 2009 till November 2012. He was then appointed vice-chancellor of Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU) in Rajasthan’s Kota on 1 February 2013 and served there till 31 July 2015 with additional charge as officiating vice-chancellor of the Rajasthan Technical University in Kota on 16 May 2015 till 31 July 2015. On 4 August 2015, he was appointed as vice-chancellor of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) and served there till 9 August 2021 with additional charge as vice-chancellor of Harcourt Butler Technical University Kanpur & officiating vice-chancellor of Lucknow’s Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University (KMCLU) till 9 August 2021. In, April 2021 he was appointed as vice-chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University where he is currently serving with additional charge as vice-chancellor of the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Agra from January 2022 till September 2022. He has also served as President of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) from 1 July 2024 till 30 June 2025. He has successfully organized many national and international conferences.
