Mahindra Aerospace is an Indian aerospace company, part of the Mahindra Group. [5] [6] It is the first Indian private firm to make smaller civil aircraft for the Indian general aviation market. [4] It is an AS9100 Rev.D certified design organization. [7]

The parent Mahindra & Mahindra group acquired a 75.1% majority stake in December 2009 of Australian aircraft manufacturer Gippsland Aeronautics, builder of the Gippsland GA200, Gippsland GA8 Airvan and the Gippsland GA10 Airvan. The company was renamed GippsAero. [8]

Also in December 2009 the Mahindra & Mahindra group also acquired a 75.1% stake in Aerostaff Australia, [9] a component manufacturer of high-precision, close-tolerance, aircraft components and assemblies for large aerospace original equipment manufacturers.[ citation needed ]

In June 2010 the company acquired the Australian Boeing unit, an aerospace component manufacturer.[ citation needed ]

Products

National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and Mahindra Aerospace jointly developed the NAL NM5 light aircraft.

HAL began aircraft manufacturing as early as 1942 with licensed production of Harlow PC-5, Curtiss P-36 Hawk and Vultee A-31 Vengeance for the Indian Air Force. In late 2020, brand owner Mahindra Aerospace announced plans to shut down GippsAero due to poor sales unless a buyer could be found. Its 2021 Board Report indicated that GippsAero Pty Ltd. had been converted into a Spares and Support Organization.. In November 2023 George Morgan announced that he had fully purchased GippsAero back from Mahindra Aerospace and was now the company's sole owner.

The GAF Nomad is a utility aircraft produced by the Government Aircraft Factories (GAF) of Australia in Melbourne. It is a 5-seater civil aircraft and an extension of the Hansa project. The NM5 was entirely designed and developed by NAL and Mahindra Aerospace on a 50:50 partnership basis. The NM5 can be used as a trainer, for transporting cargo, medical evacuation, tourism, VIP travel and for training pilots.

Chetan Maini is a co-founder and Vice Chairman at SUN Mobility and an Indian business magnate in the electric car industry. He is best known for building India's first electric car, REVA, and as the Founder of Reva Electric Car Company Ltd, now Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited, where he served as an advisor. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Skydive Umeå Gippsland GA8 Airvan crash</span> 2019 aviation accident in Umeå, Sweden

On 14 July 2019, a Gippsland GA8 Airvan crashed on a river islet in Sweden, killing all nine people on board. Structural failure of a wing is suspected as the cause of the accident. Consequently, the Gippsland GA8 Airvan was grounded by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in Australia, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAANZ) in New Zealand and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in the European Union. The grounding order was issued on 20 July and was due to run until 3 August, but was lifted early as CASA found there was no evidence for an unsafe condition, and the EASA said the wrecked aircraft had been exposed to aerodynamic loads beyond the limits specified in the type-certification basis.
