Mayor of Dannevirke

The mayor of Dannevirke officiated over the Dannevirke Borough and then the Dannevirke District of New Zealand. The borough was administered by the Dannevirke Borough Council. The initial office existed from 1892 until 1987, when Dannevirke Borough and County became Dannevirke District Council. This body was later amalgamated into the Tararua District as part of the 1989 local government reforms. There have been 17 mayors of Dannevirke. [1]

Hans Madsen Ries was a New Zealand Lutheran pastor, farmer, businessman and local politician. He was born in Stenderup, Denmark in 1860. He was first elected as Mayor of Dannevirke in 1903, narrowly beating Alfred Ransom. He did not stand again in 1905, but was incensed by criticism of his leadership in the following year that he stood again and defeated the incumbent. He retired from the mayoralty in 1910, when he was succeeded by Ransom.

There were 31 mayors of Blenheim. The last mayor of Blenheim, Leo McKendry, was elected as the first mayor of Marlborough.

The role was created as a result of the 1989 local government reforms, when Blenheim Borough was amalgamated with Picton Borough, and Marlborough County to form Marlborough District.

The mayor of Whakatāne is the head of the municipal government in Whakatāne District, New Zealand. The mayor presides over the Whakatane District Council, which was first formed in 1976 following an amalgamation, with further changes taking place in 1989.

The Mayor of Grey, often referred to as the Mayor of Greymouth, officiates over the Grey District of New Zealand which is administered by the Grey District Council with its seat in Greymouth. The Mayor of Ashburton officiates over the Ashburton District of New Zealand's South Island. The district is administered by a district council. From 1878 until the 1989 local government reforms, the area was administered by a borough council. Neil Brown is the current mayor of Ashburton; he was elected in the 2019 local elections.

The 1968 New Year Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II on the advice of the New Zealand government to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders.
