The mayor of Southland officiates over the Southland District Council. The mayor is directly elected using the first-past-the-post electoral system. The current mayor is Rob Scott, who was elected in 2022. [3]

History

Southland District was established as part of the 1989 local government amalgamation. [4] Frana Cardno joined the Southland District as a councillor in 1989, before being elected mayor in 1992. [5] She retired from that role in October 2013 prior to that year's local elections, [5] and was New Zealand's longest-serving female mayor ever. [6]

The Mayor of Whangārei is the directly elected head of the Whangarei District Council, the local government authority for the Whangarei District in New Zealand, which it controls as a territorial authority. The position has existed since 27 October 1896, when the Whangarei Borough Council was constituted. Later the mayor presided over Whangarei City Council. The position has existed in its present form since 1 November 1989, following the amalgamation of Whangarei County Council, Whangarei City Council and Hikurangi Town Board. Mary Elizabeth Ogg was a New Zealand local politician. She served as the mayor of Gore from 1995 until 2001, and was the first woman to hold that position.

The Water Services Reform Programme was a public infrastructure restructuring programme launched by the Sixth Labour Government to centralise the management of water supply and sanitation in New Zealand. It originally proposed shifting control of stormwater, drinking water and wastewater management from the country's 67 local councils to several new publicly-owned regional entities by July 2024. Details of the proposed reforms were announced in October 2021. The Three Waters reforms were criticised by several mayors and the opposition National and ACT parties.
