The Mayor of Southland is the head of the municipal government of Southland District, New Zealand. The mayor is directly elected using the first-past-the-post electoral system. The current mayor has, since the 2013 local elections, been Gary Tong.

History

Southland District was established as part of the 1989 local government amalgamation. [1] Frana Cardno joined the Southland District as a councillor in 1989, before being elected mayor in 1992. [2] She retired from that role in October 2013 prior to that year's local elections, [2] and was New Zealand's longest-serving female mayor ever. [3]

The council consists of a mayor who is elected at large, and 11 councillors elected across five wards, one of whom gets chosen as deputy-mayor. The councillors are elected under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system in triennial elections, with the most recent election held on 12 October 2013.

Frana Cardno New Zealand politician

Frana Grace Cardno was a New Zealand local-body politician. She served as Mayor of Southland District from 1992 until 2013, becoming the longest-serving female mayor in New Zealand's history.

The 2013 New Zealand local elections were triennial elections to elect local government officials and District Health Board members, and the membership of other local bodies such as Licensing Trusts. All elections were conducted by postal ballot, with election day being Saturday 12 October 2013.

The Mayor of Manawatu officiates over the Manawatu District of New Zealand, which is administered by the Manawatu District Council (MDC). The role was created in 1989 with the formation of the Manawatu District. The current mayor, Margaret Kouvelis from Feilding, was first elected in a by-election in March 2012 and is the fifth holder of the position.

The first Mayor of Hokitika was James Bonar.

The 2016 New Zealand local elections were triennial elections to select local government officials and District Health Board members. Under section 10 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, a "general election of members of every local authority or community board must be held on the second Saturday in October in every third year" from the date the Act came into effect in 2001, meaning 8 October 2016.

The Mayor of Buller is the head of the municipal government of Buller District, New Zealand. The mayor is directly elected using the first-past-the-post electoral system. The current mayor has, since the 2013 local elections, been Garry Howard.

The Mayor of Rangitikei is the head of the Rangitikei District Council in New Zealand. The role was created in 1989 with the formation of the Rangitikei District as part of the 1989 local government reforms. The current mayor since 2013 is Andy Watson from Marton.
