Miallo is a locality in the Shire of Douglas, Queensland, Australia.^[2] In the 2016 census, Miallo had a population of 376 people.^[1]

The Shire of Douglas is a local government area in Far North Queensland. It is located on the coast north of the city of Cairns. The shire, administered from the town of Mossman, covers an area of 2,436.7 square kilometres (940.8 sq mi), and existed as a local government entity from 1880 until 2008, when it was amalgamated with the City of Cairns to become the Cairns Region. Following a poll in 2013, the Shire of Douglas was re-established on 1 January 2014.

Queensland is the second-largest and third-most populous state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated in the north-east of the country, it is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. To its north is the Torres Strait, with Papua New Guinea located less than 200 km across it from the mainland. The state is the world's sixth-largest sub-national entity, with an area of 1,852,642 square kilometres (715,309 sq mi).

Geography

Miallo consists of flat land (about 10 metres above sea level) which is used for farming surrounding a mountainous area rising to Mount Somerset, a peak 200 metres above sea level).^[3]^[4] The crops grown are sugarcane and tropical fruit.^[5] There is a cane tramway system through Miallo to deliver sugarcane to the sugar mill at Mossman.^[4]

Mossman is a town and a locality in Far North Queensland, Australia, on the Mossman River. It is within the local government area of Shire of Douglas. In the 2016 census, Mossman had a population of 1,937 people.

History

The name Miallo is an Aboriginal word, meaning wild country.^[2]

Mialloa Provisional School opened on 2 October 1911. It became Miallo State School on 30 July 1923.^[6]

Education

Miallo State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at Miallo Bamboo Creek Road between Rutherford Road and Syndicate Road ( 16°23′20″S145°22′34″E / 16.3888°S 145.3761°E / -16.3888; 145.3761 (Miallo State School) ).^[7]^[8] In 2017, the school had an enrolment of 179 students with 16 teachers (11 full-time equivalent) and 13 non-teaching staff (6 full-time equivalent).^[9]

The nearest secondary school is in neighbouring Mossman.
