NSS Hindu College, Changanassery (NSSHC) [1] is one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher education of Nair Service Society was established in 1947 by Indian social reformer and freedom fighter Mannathu Padmanabha Pillai and is located on par with its central headquarters at Perunna, Changanassery. [2] [3] [4] The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam [5] and is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 'A' grade. [6]

History

The land stationing the college starts its recorded history of ownership from Ezhanthi Bhattathiri's and was later acquired by Kumaramangalam Namboothirippad's which they sold it to the public. Nair Service Society bought this northern part of the illam's property in the 1940s where the college was constructed. [7] On establishment on 10 June 1947, the college started operation in the rooms provided at the NSS High School building in Changanassery.[ citation needed ]

The foundation stone of the existing structure was laid in July 1949 by Panampilly Govinda Menon, then Minister for Education of the state of Travancore–Cochin. The opening ceremony of the college was a fortnight long event held in January 1956 which started with the flag hoisting by Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the king of erstwhile Travancore. The college was inaugurated by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, then vice president of India and declared open by Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi, then governor of state of Uttar Pradesh. [2]

Affiliation

The college was affiliated to the then University of Travancore when it was established in 1947. From 1983 onwards, it has been affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. [2] [5]

Accreditation

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited the college with 'B++' grade in 2006. [8] It was re-accredited with 'A' grade on third cycle by the 29th standing committee on 27 November 2017. [6]

National Cadet Corps

The college has two units of National Cadet Corps, an Army Wing under 5 Kerala Battalion NCC, Changanassery with a sanctioned strength of 160 cadets and a Naval Wing under 5 Kerala Naval Unit, Changanassery with a sanctioned strength of 50 cadets. [9]

National Service Scheme

The college has two units of National Service Scheme with a strength of 100 members each. [10] [11]

Campus Infrastructure

The college has a playground of around 3.5 acre in 2:1 aspect ratio with fixed football goal posts, an open basketball court, a multi-gymnasium and on-site canteen. It stations one of the four University Study Centre's of Mahatma Gandhi University.

It has a LAN linked computer lab with an accommodation for 40 students. The library block houses about 80,676 books and is equipped with Koha integrated library management system, e-gate and information kiosk. It facilitates access to electronic resources like INFLIBNET and DELNET. [12] [1] Two ladies hostels are functioning in the campus with the principal as ex officio warden. As per the NIRF data, the college has a strength of around 2500 students and 100 faculties. [13]

Programmes

As per Mahatma Gandhi University regulations, the college follows Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) from 2009 onwards for the three year undergraduate programme and Credit Based Semester System (CBCS) for the two year postgraduate programme from 2012. [1] The Centralized Allotment Process (CAP) of the university handles admission procedure to the university qouta and admission to remaining few seats are handled by college management. [14]

Mannathu Padmanabhan was an Indian social reformer and freedom fighter from the south-western state of Kerala. He is recognised as the founder of the Nair Service Society (NSS), which represents the Nair community that constitutes 15.5% of the population of the state. His birthday is observed as Mannam Jayanti every year. Padmanabhan is considered a visionary reformer who organised the Nair community under the NSS.

Govindan Parameswaran Pillai, also known as Barrister G. P. Pillai, was a freedom fighter, social reformer, barrister, journalist, and publisher. He established the first English language newspaper in South India, The Madras Standard. He drafted the Malayali Memorial in 1891. Pillai is the only Malayali whom Mahatma Gandhi has mentioned in his autobiography. He regularly wrote columns in various newspapers. Pillai stood against autocratic governance in Travancore and promoted civil rights and equal opportunity among all classes.

Thinakkal Padmanabhan, popularly known as T. Padmanabhan, is an Indian short story writer of Malayalam literature. He is a recipient of several awards including the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award of the Government of Kerala. He declined some of the earlier awards he was selected for which include Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1973), Odakkuzhal Award (1995) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1996). Mahatma Gandhi University conferred on him the honoris causa degree of the Doctor of Letters in 2018. In 2023, he was honoured with the Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian award given by the Kerala Government.

Mahatma Gandhi College is a college in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It was founded by Mannathu Padmanabhan, the founder of the Nair Service Society. The college is affiliated to University of Kerala and is managed by Nair Service Society. The pioneer institution in Thiruvananthapuram having "College with potential for excellence" awarded by NAAC. The Travancore Devaswom Board is a semi-government organisation in the erstwhile Travancore, now southern part of the State of Kerala in India, constituted to manage the Hindu Temples in Kerala, with head office at Nandancode in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. The famous Sastha temple at Sabarimala [a pilgrim centre situated in the western ghats], in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala State, is also under the management of this organisation.

St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry is a government-aided college in Kozhencherry, Kerala state, South India. Established in 1953, it is administered by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan and K. T. Thomas, Kurumthottickal, the veteran Minister of the Parish of Kozhencherry were involved in founding the college. N. S. S. College, Pandalam is a higher education institution in Kerala, affiliated to the University of Kerala. It is one of the three oldest colleges established and managed by the Nair Service Society. The college was founded by Mannathu Padmanabha Pillai in 1950, with intermediate course offerings from the University of Travancore. The college is situated at the heart of Pandalam town adjacent to several other educational institutions under the same management.

Kottayam district is a centre of education in Kerala state. The Orthodox Theological Seminary at Chungam was the first institution to teach English in South India. It was founded in 1815 by Colonel John Monroe. The C.M.S High School was founded by the British missionary, Benjamin Bailey. The first college in Kerala state and the second established under British rule in India was the C.M.S. College (1840). Mahatma Gandhi University is located in Kottayam district. Later, the clergies of Catholic Church, on seeing a need for a English High School for students of Central Travancore, established a residential high school St Berchmans English High School in 1891 in Changanasserry under leadership of Fr Charles Lavigne, then vicariate apostolate of Kottayam. Even though it was started as a school for seminarians, it was made to public soon itself. In 1922, Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry founded the famous SB College Changanassery for both intermediate students and scholars in Central Travancore. Today, both CMS College and SB College are recognised, for their legacy, as reputed and noted institutions of Kerala.
