Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West is a proposed constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament. [1] Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, it will first be contested in the 2024 general election. [2]
The constituency will be composed of the following wards of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne (as they existed on 1 December 2020):
Arthur's Hill; Benwell and Scotswood; Blakelaw; Chapel; Denton & Westerhope; Elswick; Kingston Park South & Newbiggin Hall (polling districts O01, O02 and O03); Lemington; Monument; West Fenham; Wingrove. [3]
The seat will comprise the bulk of the (to be abolished) constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne Central, extended westwards to include the districts of Denton, Lemington, Westerhope and Newbiggin Hall, currently part of Newcastle upon Tyne North. [4]

Newcastle has had a council from medieval times, which has been reformed on numerous occasions. Since 1974 the council has been a metropolitan borough council. It has been under Labour majority control since 2011. In 2024 the council became a member of the North East Combined Authority. The council is based at Newcastle Civic Centre.

The 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies was the most recent cycle of the process to redraw the constituency map for the House of Commons. The new constituency boundaries were approved by the Privy Council on 15 November 2023 and came into law on 29 November 2023.
Newcastle Independents, formerly known as Newcastle First, is a localist political party based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Initially established as the Newcastle upon Tyne Community First Party, the party was registered with the Electoral Commission in February 2011 and fielded its first candidates in May 2011 and won its first council seat in 2019 with two more elected in 2021. The party changed its name to Newcastle Independents in 2019. As of May 2023, the party has three councillors elected to Newcastle City Council.
The county of Northumberland has returned four MPs to the UK Parliament since 1983. Under the Local Government Act 1972, which came into effect on 1 April 1974, the boundaries of the historic/administrative county were significantly altered with the south-east of the county, comprising more than half the electorate, being transferred to the new metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear. These changes were reflected in the following redistribution of parliamentary seats which did not come into effect until the 1983 general election, resulting in a reduction in the county's representation from 10 to 4 MPs.
