Off Our Backs (stylized in all lowercase; oob) was an American radical feminist periodical that ran from 1970 to 2008, [1] [2] making it the longest-running feminist periodical in the United States. Marilyn Salzman-Webb and Marlene Wicks were among Off Our Backs original founders, [3] [4] creating the periodical in Washington, D.C. [3] as a response to what many felt was an underrepresentation of the women’s liberation movement in mainstream media. [5] [4] It was a self-sustaining periodical [2] edited and published by a collective of women [3] consisting mainly of volunteers [4] who practiced consensus decision-making. Reporting on feminism related topics, [5] [3] the periodical transitioned from a monthly to a bi-monthly [6] newspaper, and ultimately to a quarterly magazine [7] before financial difficulties led to its termination in 2008. Off Our Backs dealt with some controversy in 1984 during the creation of On Our Backs . [9] [10] [11]

Off Our Backs was founded in January 1970 [5] by Marlene Wicks and Marilyn Salzman Webb in Washington, D.C. [4] [3] The original funding for the periodical came from $1000 that was collected to start an anti-Vietnam War coffee house, with the idea for the paper stemming from frustration about the lack of news about the women’s liberation movement in mainstream media. [4] [5]
They created the periodical with the intention for the paper to be by, for and about women, emphasizing that the paper was part of a movement. [3] [13] The name Off Our Backs was selected to reflect the dual nature of the women’s movement. [14] Their mission statement was stated as “to provide news and information about women's lives and feminist activism; to educate the public about the status of women around the world; to serve as a forum for feminist ideas and theory; to be an information resource on feminist, women's, and lesbian culture; and to seek social justice and equality for women". [15] The editorial statement from the first issue in February 1970 states that Off Our Backs "is a paper for all women who are fighting for the liberation of their lives and we hope it will grow and expand to meet the needs of women from all backgrounds and classes." [15]
The first issue of Off Our Backs was published on February 27, 1970, consisting of a twelve-page tabloid first issue. [14] The first issue included articles about the birth control pill, abortion rights, Korean women’s movements, and advocacy for women’s rights protests and oppositions. [14] The first issue was written by a collective of 17 women, namely Marlene Wicks, Alison Sand, Roxanne Dunbar, Martha Atkins, Conni Bille Finnerty, Paula Goldsmid, Bonnie McFadden, Charlotte Bunch-Weeks, Sue Tod, Jessica Finney, Marilyn Salzman-Webb, Norma Allen Lesser, Anne Hutchinson, Rachel Scott, Coletta Reid, Regina Sigal, and Alice Wolfson. Off Our Backs began publishing the journal monthly after its initial release, skipping one month of the year. [4] The frequency of publication remained as 11 publications a year from 1970 until 2002. During that time, the Off Our Backs collective wrote about numerous local and international subjects revolving around feminist and women’s issues. [5] During this time, the paper included several exposés, interviews and editorials. [5] [3] By the 1980s the collective published rare editorials and moved away from them to signed commentaries. [5] [3] Carol Anne Douglas (one of Off Our Backs' longest-writing members) explained their cease of editorials due to the fact that the collective "often disagreed on issues anyways". [5]
1977 was the year Off Our Backs peaked, with 15,000 copies sold. [16]
In 1988 Off Our Backs struggled to keep publishing. Carol Anne Douglas stated that only two or three women would attend meetings at the time. It was not until 1989 when three new women joined the collective that Off Our Backs was able to publish with more ease. [5]
By its later years, Off Our Backs switched from a newspaper format to a magazine format. [4]
In 2002 Off Our Backs began publishing journals bi-monthly (six times a year). [6] It remained bi-monthly until 2006 when the paper was released quarterly. [4] [17]
Off Our Backs published the last issue of the news journal in 2008, citing financial difficulties as the primary factor behind the cessation. [8] [4] Carol Anne Douglas stated that the lack of money led to the end of publication as prices rose and subscriptions diminished. [4] In their final publication, the Off Our Backs collective wrote about considering moving the periodical online and requesting donations. [18] Off Our Backs never made an online version of the periodical thus was the final issue published.
Off Our Backs expanded its coverage to include topics such as: international women's issues, LGBTQ+ rights, and anti-racist activism. The periodical featured investigative journalism and analysis. The collective espoused a commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and engaging in political activism. [19]
For example, Off Our Backs provided coverage of the Roe vs. Wade decision, The Women's Movement and the Lesbian and Gay Rights Movement. [20] [21] [22]
The publication had an impact on the feminist movement in the United States and beyond. The periodical provided a platform for feminist discourse, advocacy, activism, and community building. [23]
Off Our Backs reported on a wide range of feminism related topics not covered in mass media such as issues of international affairs, women's rights, activism, sexuality, women of colour and social justice, [3] [5] positioning itself as a news journal by, for and about women. [13] The form varied throughout its publication, involving a wide range of articles, exposes, interviews, editorials, and signed commentaries. [3] [5]
Off Our Backs was written and edited by a collective of women who used consensus decision-making to create the paper. Consensus decision-making allowed the collective to come to decisions acceptable to all. [4] Marilyn Salzman-Webb, one of the paper's founders, described the process behind the collective's writing, stating "each member had to learn about those issues up for discussion: current news, the legal system, the history of the family, the role of romance in Western civilization, etc. (...) As collective members pushed themselves further intellectually, and learned to relate to one another differently from the way (competitively) that they had been taught to relate to other women, they found it necessary to challenge the foundations of their lives, and bringing change on many levels." The paper always remained nonhierarchical, [5] consisting of around 15 members at a time. [4] Marilyn Salzman-Webb, one of the paper's founders stated that the collective was made up of women ranging from ages 17 to 32. [3]
The Off Our Backs collective was staffed mainly by volunteers. [4] Starting in 1973, Off Our Backs paid one or two staff members minimal salaries. [4]
The periodical was self-sustaining, receiving its funding through paid subscriptions. [2]
The title of the magazine On Our Backs (one of the first women-run erotica magazines and one of the first magazines to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the United States) was a satirical reference to Off Our Backs, which the founders of On Our Backs considered prudish about sexuality. [11] Off Our Backs regarded the new magazine as "pseudo-feminist" and threatened legal action over the logo OOB. [9] [10]
Lesbian feminism is a cultural movement and critical perspective that encourages women to focus their efforts, attentions, relationships, and activities towards their fellow women rather than men, and often advocates lesbianism as the logical result of feminism. Lesbian feminism was most influential in the 1970s and early 1980s, primarily in North America and Western Europe, but began in the late 1960s and arose out of dissatisfaction with the New Left, the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, sexism within the gay liberation movement, and homophobia within popular women's movements at the time. Many of the supporters of Lesbianism were actually women involved in gay liberation who were tired of the sexism and centering of gay men within the community and lesbian women in the mainstream women's movement who were tired of the homophobia involved in it.
Cultural feminism is a term used to describe a variety of feminism that attempts to revalue and redefine attributes culturally ascribed to femaleness. It is also used to describe theories that commend innate differences between women and men.
Feminist separatism is the theory that feminist opposition to patriarchy can be achieved through women's separation from men. Much of the theorizing is based in lesbian feminism.
Black feminism is a branch of feminism that focuses on the African-American woman's experiences and recognizes the intersectionality of racism and sexism. Black feminism philosophy centers on the idea that "Black women are inherently valuable, that liberation is a necessity not as an adjunct to somebody else's but because of our need as human persons for autonomy."
Grace Atkinson, better known as Ti-Grace Atkinson, is an American radical feminist activist, writer and philosopher. She was an early member of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and presided over the New York chapter in 1967–68, though she quickly grew disillusioned with the group. She left to form The Feminists, which she left a few years later due to internal disputes. Atkinson was a member of the Daughters of Bilitis and an advocate for political lesbianism. Atkinson has been largely inactive since the 1970s, but resurfaced in 2013 to co-author an open statement expressing radical feminists' concerns about what they perceived as the silencing of discussion around "the currently fashionable concept of gender."
The feminist sex wars, also known as the lesbian sex wars, sex wars or porn wars, are collective debates amongst feminists regarding a number of issues broadly relating to sexuality and sexual activity. Differences of opinion on matters of sexuality deeply polarized the feminist movement, particularly leading feminist thinkers, in the late 1970s and early 1980s and continue to influence debate amongst feminists to this day.
New York Radical Feminists (NYRF) was a radical feminist group founded by Shulamith Firestone and Anne Koedt in 1969, after they had left Redstockings and The Feminists, respectively. Firestone's and Koedt's desire to start this new group was aided by Vivian Gornick's 1969 Village Voice article, “The Next Great Moment in History Is Theirs”. The end of this essay announced the formation of the group and included a contact address and phone number, raising considerable national interest from prospective members. NYRF was organized into small cells or "brigades" named after notable feminists of the past; Koedt and Firestone led the Stanton-Anthony Brigade.
The Combahee River Collective (CRC) was a Black feminist lesbian socialist organization active in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1974 to 1980. The Collective argued that both the white feminist movement and the Civil Rights Movement were not addressing their particular needs as Black women and more specifically as Black lesbians. Racism was present in the mainstream feminist movement, while Delaney and Manditch-Prottas argue that much of the Civil Rights Movement had a sexist and homophobic reputation. The Collective was a group that met to discuss the intersections of oppression based on race, gender, heteronormativity, and class and argued for the liberation of Black women on all fronts.
Feminist views on sexuality widely vary. Many feminists, particularly radical feminists, are highly critical of what they see as sexual objectification and sexual exploitation in the media and society. Radical feminists are often opposed to the sex industry, including opposition to prostitution and pornography. Other feminists define themselves as sex-positive feminists and believe that a wide variety of expressions of female sexuality can be empowering to women when they are freely chosen. Some feminists support efforts to reform the sex industry to become less sexist, such as the feminist pornography movement.
The personal is political, also termed The private is political, is a political argument used as a rallying slogan by student activist movements and second-wave feminism from the late 1960s. In the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, it was seen as a challenge to the patriarchy, nuclear family and family values. The phrase was popularized by the publication of feminist activist Carol Hanisch's 1969 essay, "The Personal Is Political." The phrase and idea have been repeatedly described as a defining characterization of second-wave feminism, radical feminism, women's studies, or feminism in general. It has also been used by some female artists as the underlying philosophy for their art practice.
Sisterhood Is Forever: The Women's Anthology for a New Millennium is a 2003 anthology of feminist writings edited by Robin Morgan. It has more than fifty women contributing sixty original essays written specifically for it. It is the follow-up anthology to Sisterhood Is Global: The International Women's Movement Anthology (1984), which itself is the follow-up to Sisterhood Is Powerful: An Anthology of Writings from the Women's Liberation Movement (1970).
Womyn's land is an intentional community organised by lesbian separatists to establish counter-cultural, women-centred space, without the presence of men. These lands were the result of a social movement of the same name that developed in the 1970s in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and western Europe. Many still exist today. Womyn's land-based communities and residents are loosely networked through social media; print publications such as newsletters; Maize: A Lesbian Country Magazine; Lesbian Natural Resources, a not-for-profit organisation that offers grants and resources; and regional and local gatherings.
Maureen Brady is an American writer, editor and educator. She is best known for her novels Ginger's Fire, Folly, and Give Me Your Good Ear. She currently lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, NY.
Marilyn Salzman Webb, also known as Marilyn Webb, is an American author, activist, professor, feminist and journalist. She has been involved in the civil rights, feminist, anti-Vietnam war and end-of-life care movements, and is considered one of the founders of the Second-wave women's liberation movement.
Adrienne J. Smith (1934–1992) was an American psychologist. She came out as a lesbian in 1973 and became one of the first openly out lesbian psychologists in the American Psychological Association (APA). She worked for reforms in the APA and spoke on LGBT rights across the country.
The Women in Print Conference was a conference of feminist women involved in publishing, including workers from feminist bookstores, in the United States. It was conceptualized by June Arnold and involved networking and workshops. The conference was held three times: in 1976, 1981 and 1985.
Celestine Ware was a radical and Black feminist theorist and activist. A member of the New York Radical Feminists, she authored Woman Power: The Movement for Women's Liberation.
Speak Out was a second-wave feminist newsletter, launched in 1977 by the Brixton Black Women's Group (BBWG). The aim of the newsletter was to keep alive the debate about the relevance of feminism to black politics and provided a black women's perspective on immigration, housing, health and culture.
