Oligodon is genus of colubrid snakes that was first described by Austrian zoologist Leopold Fitzinger in 1826. [1] This genus is widespread throughout central and tropical Asia. The snakes of this genus are commonly known as kukri snakes. [3]

Description

The species in the genus Oligodon are egg eaters and are usually under 90 cm (35 in) in total length (including tail). Different species display widely variable patterns and colorations. They subsist mostly by scavenging the eggs of birds and reptiles. Besides eggs, species of this genus also feeds on lizards, frogs, and small rodents.

Oligodon is a rear-fanged snake genus. All member species have a set of enlarged teeth placed in the back of the upper jaws, as well as functional Duvernoy's glands. They are not dangerous to humans, though. Bites by some species have been reported to bleed excessively, suggesting presence of anticoagulants in the Duvernoy's gland secretions. [4] Species of Oligodon are mostly nocturnal, and live on the floor of mature forests.

The common name of the genus comes from the kukri, a distinctively shaped Nepalese knife, which is similar in shape to the broad, flattened, curved hind teeth of Oligodon species. These teeth are specially adapted for their main diet of eggs; the teeth cut open eggs as they are being swallowed by the snake, allowing for easier digestion.[ citation needed ]

At least three species ( O. fasciolatus , O. formosanus and O. ocellatus ) will slice open the abdomens of frogs and toads and devour their internal organs, before finally swallowing the prey whole (if the prey is not too large to be swallowed). That toads can be swallowed whole suggests that at least some species are immune to toad bufotoxin. [5]

Cyrtodactylus Genus of lizards

Cyrtodactylus is a diverse genus of Asian geckos, commonly known as bent-toed geckos, bow-fingered geckos, and forest geckos. The genus has 361 described species as of 2024, which makes it the largest of all gecko genera.

Oligodon cinereus Species of snake

Oligodon cinereus, the ashy kukri snake or Günther's kukri snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae.

Oligodon theobaldi, commonly known as the Mandalay kukri snake or Theobald's kukri snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Asia.

Lycodon Genus of snakes

Lycodon is a genus of colubrid snakes, commonly known as wolf snakes. The Neo-Latin name Lycodon is derived from the Greek words λύκος (lykos) meaning wolf and οδόν (odon) meaning tooth, and refers to the fang-like anterior maxillary and mandibular teeth. They are nonvenomous, but many members of this genus strongly resemble the venomous kraits in appearance, an example of Emsleyan mimicry.

Oligodon nagao, the Nagao kukri snake, is a species of snakes in the family Colubridae. Specimens have been collected from Lang Son and Cao Bang in northern Vietnam, Guangxi Autonomous Region in southern People's Republic of China, and from Khammouane Province in central Laos PDR.

Oligodon moricei, commonly known as Morice's kukri snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to southern Vietnam.

Oligodon deuvei Species of snake

Oligodon deuvei is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Southeast Asia.

Oligodon pseudotaeniatus, commonly known as the false striped kukri snake, is a species of colubrid snake. It is endemic to Thailand and known from the Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Saraburi Province, and Bangkok. The type series was collected by Malcolm Arthur Smith. The specific name pseudotaeniatus refers to its similarity to Oligodon taeniatus, with whom it was confused prior to its species description in 2008.

Oligodon ancorus, commonly known as the northern short-headed snake, is a species of colubrid snake found on the islands of Luzon and Mindoro in the Philippines, as well as the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. However, whether the populations from Sumatra, described as Oligodon rhombifer, belong to this species has been contested.

Oligodon annamensis, commonly known as the Annam kukri snake or Leviton’s kukri snake, is a species of colubrid snake originally known from two specimens from Vietnam, where it was thought to be endemic. It has also since been found in Cambodia and Thailand.

Oligodon annulifer, also known as the ringed kukri snake, is a colubrid snake endemic to the island of Borneo.

Oligodon barroni Species of snake

Oligodon barroni, or Barron's kukri snake, is a species of snake in the subfamily Colubrinae of the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Southeast Asia.

Oligodon huahin Species of snake

Oligodon huahin, the Hua Hin kukri snake, is a species of kukri snakes in the genus Oligodon. The species was first discovered and described in late 2016, and the article was published July 13, 2017. It is only known from its type locality but its range is likely to be more extensive. O. huahin is thought to be very secretive, similar to other species of the genus Oligodon. This theory is supported by the type specimen, which all were males, suggesting that it was found during the mating season where males are out and actively search for females to reproduce. This may also explain why this species had not yet been discovered

Oligodon fasciolatus Species of snake in the family Colubridae

Oligodon fasciolatus, commonly known as the small-banded kukri snake or the fasciolated kukri snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is native to Southeast Asia. This snake uniquely eviscerates live poisonous toads, Duttaphrynus melanostictus, to avoid toxic white liquid the toad secretes.

Oligodon churahensis Species of snake from India

Oligodon churahensis, the Churah Valley kukri snake, is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. It was discovered when a photo of it was posted in Instagram and noticed by two biologists, leading to them contacting the poster and collecting specimens of the species. It is known only from the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The common and specific name both refer to the Churah Valley, where it was discovered.

Oligodon russelius Species of snake

Oligodon russelius, commonly known as Russell's kukri snake is a species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is very closely related to Oligodon arnensis, from which it has been recently separated. The specific epithet honours the British herpetologist Patrick Russell, one of whose illustrations possibly depicts this species.

Oligodon hamptoni, also known commonly as Hampton's kukri snake, is a species of snake in the subfamily Colubrinae of the family Colubridae. The species is native to southern Asia.

Oligodon jintakunei, also known commonly as Jintakune's kukri snake and the Krabi kukri snake, is a species of snake in the subfamily Colubrinae of the family Colubridae. The species is endemic to Thailand.

Oligodon kampucheaensis is a species of snakes in the subfamily Colubrinae. It is found in Cambodia.

Oligodon ocellatus Species of snake

The ocellated kukri snake is a species of snake of the family Colubridae.
