PS Royal Consort was a paddle steamship passenger vessel operated by the London and North Western Railway and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway from 1870 to 1890. [1]
As built, the ship was 177.9 feet (54.22 m), with a beam of 25.2 feet (7.68 m) and a depth of 15.2 feet (4.63 m). A two-cylinder double-acting steam enging propelled the ship via paddle wheels. The engine was built by Tod & McGregor, Glasgow. She was assessed at 522 GRT, 297 NRT. [2]
Royal Consort was built in 1844 by Tod & McGregor, Glasgow as yard number 9. She was launched on 2 August. She was originally owned by F. Kemp and Company and its subsidiary the North Lancashire Steam Navigation Company and was used on the Fleetwood to Ardrossan service. Her port of registry was Glasgow and the United Kingdom Official Number 17252 was allocated. On 18 March 1850 her port of registry was changed to Fleetwood. She also operated on the Glasgow to Derry service in 1851–52. [2] On 14 December 1858, Royal Consort ran aground at Belfast, County Antrim whilst on a voyage from Fleetwood to Belfast. She was refloated. [3]
In 1866, she was lengthened to 215.5 feet (65.68 m), with a beam of 29.2 feet (8.90 m) and a depth of 16.0 feet (4.88 m). At some point she was re-engined; the new engine was made by J. Jack & Co., Liverpool. She was assessed at 795 gross register tons (GRT), 394 NRT [2] In 1870, Royal Consort was sold to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. The London and North Western Railway became joint owners in 1880. She was sold to A. & B. Stewart, Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1890 and was deleted from the shipping registers in 1891. [2]
Jamnagar was a 576 GRT coaster which was built in 1924 for Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar. In 1941 she entered service with the Royal Indian Navy. In 1944, she was sold into merchant service before being requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Bulbul. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Hellenic Bulbul. The name Hellenic Bee had been allocated but she ran aground and sank before the proposed name change could be implemented.
Arpha was a 602 GRT passenger ferry built in 1900 as Canterbury for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. She passed to the Southern Railway on 1 January 1923. She was sold to W E Guinness in 1926 and renamed Arpha. In 1938 she was sold to Sark Motorships Ltd, only to be requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1939. Postwar, she was sold to Compania Shell de Venezuela and renamed Coriano. After a further change of ownership she was scrapped in 1955.
Ingénieur Général Haarbleicher was a 7,067 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1944 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Call. In 1945 she was sold to the French government and renamed Ingénieur Général Haarbleicher. In November 1945, she ran aground on Stromboli and broke in two. Declared a total loss, she was scrapped in 1947.
Anonity was an 890 GRT coastal tanker which was built in 1945 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Campden. She was sold in 1947 and renamed Anonity. In 1966, she was sold and renamed Petrola II. A further sale in 1969 saw her renamed Kalymnos. She ran aground in April 1970 and was scrapped the following month.
Saltfleet was a 1,051 GRT coaster which was built in 1944 by John Lewis & Sons Ltd, Aberdeen as Empire Cheyne. She was built for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946 she was sold and renamed Saltfleet. In October 1951, she ran aground at Reedness. Although salvage operations commenced in December 1951, they were abandoned in October 1952. Upon resumption of salvage in 1953, it was found that Saltfleet had broken her back, and the ship was scrapped in two parts, that of the bow section in May 1954 while the stern section was not scrapped until October 1954.
Pickhuben was a 999 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1923 by Union Giesserei, Königsberg for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Lübeck, Germany, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condicote. She was passed to the Norwegian Government in 1946 and renamed Grimsnes. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and was renamed Tungenes, serving until 1961 when she was scrapped.
Elbe was a 1,197 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1921 by Nobiskrug Werft, Rendsburg for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Copenhagen, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Confederation. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed José Dias. She served until she was scrapped in 1966.
Runa was a 1,942 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1944 as Eichberg by Van der Giessen, Krimpen aan den IJssel, Netherlands for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in April 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Consent. In 1949, Empire Consent was sold into merchant service and renamed Runa. In 1964, she was sold to Greek owners and renamed Karyatis, serving until 1968 when she was scrapped.
Frontier was a 1,000 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 as Cattaro by Memeler Schiffswerke, Lindenau & Co, Memel, Germany. After a sale in 1930 she was renamed Finkenau. In 1945, she was renamed Levensau and was seized later that year by the Allies at Brunsbüttel, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Convoy. She was allocated to the Netherlands in 1946 and renamed Grebburg. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Echo. A sale to South Africa in 1952 saw her renamed Frontier. The ship served until 1957 when she ran aground and broke up.
Kolno was a 2,487 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1936 as Nordcoke by Lübecker Flenderwerke AG, Lübeck, Germany. In 1940, she was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine and was renamed Nordlicht. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies at Hamburg, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Conwear. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Armavir. In 1947, she was sold to Poland and renamed Kolno. She served until 1971 when she ran aground off Falsterbo, Sweden, following which she served as a hulk until scrapped in 1983.
TSS Duke of Clarence was a passenger vessel operated jointly by the London and North Western Railway and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) from 1892 between Fleetwood and northern Irish ports. In 1906 the LYR bought her outright and transferred her to their summer service from Hull to Zeebrugge, returning to the Irish Sea in winter. During the First World War Duke of Clarence served as an armed boarding steamer. She resumed passenger service in 1920, passing through changes of ownership in the reorganisations of Britain's railway companies in the 1920s, until she was scrapped in 1930.
PS Tredagh was a paddle steamer passenger vessel operated by the Drogheda Steam Packet Company from 1876 to 1902 and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway from 1902 to 1912.
PS Iverna was a paddle steamer passenger vessel operated by the Drogheda Steam Packet Company from 1895 to 1902 and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway from 1902 to 1912.
Ulysses was a 332 GRT coaster that was built in 1941 as Empire Creek by J Pollock & Sons, Faversham, United Kingdom. She was built for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Empire Creek survived being bombed shortly after entering service. In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Springcreek. Further sales in 1948 and 1951 saw her named Goldcreek and Milborne respectively. In 1964, she was sold to Greece and renamed Georgios. In 1978, she was sold to Panama and renamed Ulysses, serving until she ran aground near Naples, Italy in 1979 and was wrecked.
Holdernith was a 643 GRT coaster that was built in 1944 as Empire Dorrit by Scott and Son Ltd, Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, UK, for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was transferred to the French government in 1945 and renamed Lieutenant Lancelot, serving until 1954 when she was sold to a British company and renamed Holdernith. She served until 1963, when she was scrapped.
Empire Energy was a 6,548 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1923 as Grete by Neptun AG, Rostock, Germany. She was sold to an Italian firm in 1932 and renamed Gabbiano. She was seized by the United Kingdom in 1940, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Energy. She served until 5 November 1941, when she ran aground off Cape Norman, Newfoundland, and was wrecked.
The passenger steamer SS Peel Castle was operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company from her purchase in 1912 until she was sold for breaking in 1939.
SS or RMS The Ramsey was a passenger steamer operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company from 1912 to 1914. She had been built in 1895 as Duke of Lancaster for the joint service to Belfast of the London and North Western Railway and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway companies. The steamer was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1914 as the armed boarding vessel HMS Ramsey and sunk the following year.
Empire Fisher was a 268 GRT trawler that was built as Herrlichkeit in 1922 by Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik, Hamburg, Germany for the Nordsee Deutsche Hochsee Fischerei Bremen-Cuxhaven AG. She was captured in 1940 by HMS Glasgow, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Fisher. She was sold in 1948. Sold for scrapping in 1952, she was resold to Ireland and scrapped later that year.
Oriana was a 295 GRT tug which was built in 1945 as Empire Frieda by Ferguson Brothers Ltd., Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Ownership was transferred to the Ministry of Transport in 1946 and the Admiralty in 1947, when she was renamed Oriana. She struck a mine and sank in the River Colne, Essex on 19 January 1948 with the loss of all on deck.
