According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.73 square miles (1.9 km2), of which 0.02 square miles (0.04 km2), or 2.21%, is water. [2]
The town of Petrey was named after a man who owned a large cotton plantation. The railroad wanted to use some of his land, and he agreed. The railroad company established a train station on the land, and named it after him.[ citation needed ]

There were 37 housing units at an average density of 50.2 per square mile (19.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.24% White and 4.76% Black or African American. 4.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 28 households, out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together (3.6% same-sex couples), 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% were non-families. 39.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 3.13.
