Phlegmacium luteiaureum is a species of fungus in the family Cortinariaceae.^[1]

Taxonomy

The species was described in 2014 and classified as Cortinarius luteiaureus. It was placed in the subgenus Phlegmacium of the large mushroom genus Cortinarius .^[2]

In 2022 the species was transferred from Cortinarius and reclassified as Phlegmacium luteiaureum based on genomic data.^[3]

Etymology

The specific epithet luteiaureum (originally luteiaureus) refers to the yellow colour of the cap.^[2]

Habitat and distribution

Found in northern Finland, where it grows on the ground in coniferous forest.^[2]

It was placed in the of the large mushroom genus Cortinarius. The specific epithet cremeiamarescens refers to the fruitbody colour and the bitter-tasting cap cuticle. Phlegmacium gentianeus is a sister species with which it has been previously confused. It is found in southern Europe and western North America, where it grows in coniferous forests.
