The history of the Portuguese community in Lithuania is very recent. Both countries are EU as well as NATO members. They also share a common currency. Many Portuguese reside temporarily in Lithuania because of NATO operations in the country or for business. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Currently there are 280 Portuguese soldiers stationed in Lithuania: their numbers have drastically increased after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. [10] [11]

The two countries enjoy friendly relationships and mutual trust, witnessing increasing trade and linguistic cooperation as well. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Footballers

In recent years some Portuguese international footballers have moved to Lithuania in order to play for Lithuanian clubs. In 2023 these included: Gonçalo Vieira  [ lv ], Aires Sousa and Nuno Pereira  [ lv ].

The Portuguese community in Lithuania retains strong ties with its homeland and, between 2000 and 2021, it has sent approximately 1.79 million euros () to Portugal in remittances. In the same timeframe, Lithuanians in Portugal (numbering around 1,000 individuals) [16] have sent approximately 17.29 million euros () to Lithuania. [17]

Portuguese language

Despite the Portuguese language lacking widespread knowledge in the country, interest towards Portuguese culture is increasing.

As of today, the Portuguese are part of a wider Portuguese-speaking community in Latvia, comprising around 10 people from PALOP countries (the majority being from Angola), Timor-Leste or Macau and around 95 Brazilians. [18] [19] [20] [21] People from CPLP countries thus number around 190-200 people, accounting for 0.01% of the population of Lithuania.
