Rafiath Rashid Mithila (born 25 May 1981) is a Bangladeshi actress, singer and development worker known professionally by the mononym Mithila. [1] [2] Besides her film work in both Bangladesh and Kolkata, India, she is the head of the Early Childhood Development programme in BRAC International. [3] [4]

Early life and education

Mithila went to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [5] She earned both her bachelors and masters degrees in political science at the University of Dhaka. [6] She then completed a second masters in early childhood development at BRAC University, winning the Chancellor's gold medal. [7] [8] She earned a B.Ed. degree from the National University in Bangladesh. She went on for further studies in the United States, studying "Contemporary Approaches to Curriculum: Instruction and Assessment" at the College of Education and Human Development of the University of Minnesota in 2010. She currently pursuing a doctorate in Early Childhood Education at the University of Geneva.

Besides academic work, Mithila has studied Kathak, Manipuri, and Bharat Natyam dance at the Dance Academy of the Benuka Institute of Fine Arts in Bangladesh. She also received training in Nazrul Geeti, or the study of songs written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh, at the Hindol Music Academy. [1] She studied art at the Nandan school, and exhibited her oil paintings at a Drik Gallery group exhibition. [1] She was a child actor at the People's Theatre, Bangladesh. [9]

Audiovisual media

She began her modeling career in 2002, while she was still at university, with the fashion house Neelanjana Palli. [1] Her acting career was launched when she starred in the television drama Shunchen Ekjon Radio Jokeyr Golpo in 2006. She also appeared in TV commercials, and became a brand ambassador for many products. [6] She was a model in music videos, and also acted in various dramas and telefilms. [1] [10] In 2022 she made her feature film debut with Bangladeshi film director and screenwriter Anonno Mamun in the film Omanush, co-starring with Nirab Hossain. She then appeared in director Sauvik Kundu's Aay Khuku Aay in India, sharing the screen with Prosenjit Chatterjee. [11] She hosted the celebrity talk show Amar Ami on Banglavision. [12]

Academics and work in early childhood education

Mithila was on the faculty of the English Literature and Language, Scholastica International School, Dhaka. Then she served as a guest lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Development of the Institute of Educational Development at BRAC University in 2017. She was also a lecturer for English Language and Foundation courses at the Northern University Bangladesh. Mithila currently works as the head of Early Childhood Development at BRAC International. [13] She works extensively in some African countries. [14] She has been an active contributor to the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Swayam in West Bengal, India. She is a member of Asia-Pacific Regional Network for Early Childhood (ARNEC) and South Asia Forum of Early Childhood Development Professionals (SAFECDP).[ citation needed ]

Personal life

Mithila was married to the singer Tahsan Rahman Khan from 2006 until 2017, during which they had a daughter born in 2013. [15] [6] [16] [17] She married Indian film director Srijit Mukherji in 2019. [18] [19] [20] Bangladeshi singer Shayan Chowdhury Arnob is her cousin. [21]

The Cinema of Bangladesh is a diverse and vibrant entity, consisting of films produced across various regions, each contributing its unique linguistic and cultural perspective. Beyond the dominant Dhaka based Bengali-language film industry Dhallywood, which is a portmanteau of "Dhaka" and "Hollywood", Bangladesh is home to cinema in several other languages and dialects. For instance, Chakma cinema from Bandarban, Garo cinema from Sherpur, Meitei and Sylheti cinema from Sylhet, Chatgaiya cinema from Chattogram. These regional cinemas play a crucial role in preserving and promoting the linguistic and cultural heritage of the country. The dominant style of Bangladeshi cinema is melodramatic cinema, which developed from 1947 to 1990 and characterizes most films to this day. Cinema was introduced in Bangladesh in 1898 by the Bradford Bioscope Company, credited to have arranged the first film release in Bangladesh. Between 1913 and 1914, the first production company, Picture House, was opened. A 1928 short silent film titled Sukumari was the first Bengali-produced film in the region. The first full-length film, The Last Kiss, was released in 1931.

Unoloukik is a Bangladeshi anthology streaming television series written by Shibabrata Barman and directed by Robiul Alam Robi. Individual episodes explore the psychoanalytic journey of the human mind. There are five episodes in this series. The first episode, Moribar Holo Taar Shwaad, premiered on 12 July 2021, and the last episode, Dwikhondito, on 12 August 2021 on Chorki streaming service.

Mayaa is a 2023 Indian Bengali language thriller drama film written and directed by Raajhorshee De. The film produced by Debdas Banarjee and Rohit Banarjee under the banner of DSR Entertainment House. It's a Bengali adaptation of play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The film stars Rafiath Rashid Mithila, Tanushree Chakraborty, Reecha Sharma, Koneenica Banerjee, Rahul Banerjee, Gaurav Chakraborty and Sudipta Chakraborty in the lead roles. The film was theatrical released on 7 July 2023.

O Abhagi is a 2024 Bengali language feature film Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's short story 'Abhagir Swargo' starring Rafiath Rashid Mithila in lead role. Story Rewriting, Screenplay, Dialogue, & Directed by Anirban Chakraborty, Presented by Swabhumi Entertainment and Produced by Dr. Prabir Bhaumik. Film released all over West Bengal on 29 March 2024.
