The Railway Enthusiasts Society Incorporated (known by its acronym RES) is a New Zealand railway enthusiast society formed on 17 July 1958. [1] RES formed the Glenbrook Vintage Railway (GVR) in 1968, with GVR now forming a separate charitable trust. [2]
The RES objectives are as follows:
The Railway Enthusiasts Society incorporates the Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
The Society has operated excursions to places of interest, both railway related and non-railway related. On the earliest excursions, extra carriages were attached to regular passenger trains on both the North Island and South Island. The Society also started operating its own charter trains for larger trips.
In 1964, three 4-8-2 JA class locomotives triple-headed an 18 carriage train from Auckland to Hamilton. The Society repeated this operation with DA class diesel locomotives 1410, 1429 and 1431, on the Auckland – Mt Maunganui "Seatrain" 2000 trip and Auckland – Whangarei "Waves & Wheels" trip in 2001.[ citation needed ]
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the end of steam traction provided the opportunity to run locomotives from their bases to Auckland, for preservation as part of the Society's Glenbrook Vintage Railway project.
In 1969 small WW class locomotive 480 ran a rail tour of the Midland Line from Greymouth to Christchurch, then up the Main North Line from Christchurch to Picton, before crossing the Cook Strait and up the North Island Main Trunk from Wellington to Auckland. [3] Many people watched the train travel north. The journey was also the subject of a National Film Unit film "The Ride of 480". [4] The locomotive had been used on many Society excursions around the Auckland area and was a favourite with many of the members who also worked on NZR at the time.[ citation needed ]
In 1972, JA locomotive "Diana" was brought to Auckland via the Wairarapa and Taranaki regions with sister locomotive J 1236. This was be the last steam train to carry passengers out of Auckland City until 1985.
In 1976, due to a shortage of available carriages, NZR announced it would no longer make carriages available to organisations for charter work. The Society assisted in the formation of the National Federation of Rail Societies (later renamed Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand), a national body to look after the interests of all rail heritage organisations in New Zealand. The Federation successfully negotiated for private carriages to operate on the national rail network.
In 1978, an excursion from Auckland to Tauranga through the recently opened Kaimai Tunnel, operated with three Society carriages and one carriage hired from Steam Incorporated.
In 1981 and 1986, the Society operated steam-hauled trains with Glenbrook Vintage Railway's Mallet locomotive and WW 480 along Quay Street in Auckland as part of tourism promotions. These lines, which served Port of Auckland wharves, were removed in the late 1980s and the trains were the last to carry passengers in Auckland's Central Business District until the opening of Britomart Transport Centre in July 2003.
In 1985, permission was granted by NZR to the National Federation to operate trains on the NZR network. In co-operation with Steam Incorporated, the Society ran a special Auckland-Wellington rail tour, pulled by JA 1250 "Diana" and KA 945.
In 1988, the Society was involved in the Ferrymead 125 celebrations in Christchurch, commemorating the 125th anniversary of the first steam railway in New Zealand. The Society ran a rail tour from Auckland to Christchurch, hauled by JA 1250. Once in Christchurch, the trainset was used on excursions associated with the events, including a run from Christchurch to Timaru return and Christchurch to Arthur's Pass and return. These latter trips also consisted of Otago Excursion Train Trust carriages and New Zealand Railways Corporation carriages pulled by J A 1250 and J 1211 "Gloria" on its first network appearance with the then recently formed Mainline Steam Trust.
The Society continued to tours during the 1990s, despite the loss of JA 1250 from service for a major overhaul.
The Silver Fern railcar ran on the North Island including the Taneatua Branch, Murupara Branch, Kinleith Branch, Cambridge Branch, Rotowaro Branch, Mission Bush Branch, Onehunga Branch, North Auckland Line to Otiria, Stratford–Okahukura Line, Waitara Branch, Kapuni Branch, Wanganui Branch and the Wairarapa Line.[ citation needed ]
In 1991, the Society operated a European and British Rail tour, organised by John Stitchbury.[ citation needed ]
On the Labour Weekend 1993, the Society ran the last steam-hauled train on the Onehunga Branch, operated with WW 480. (In 2010, steam returned to Onehunga during an open day before commuter services commenced, this time using Mainline Steam's JA 1275.)[ citation needed ]
In 1994, Silver Stream Railway's C 847 was steamed at Glenbrook Vintage Railway for the first time since retiring from NZR service. In early October, it was certified to run on mainline rails, and hauled the "Western Leader Flyer" between Avondale and Waitakere in coordination with Henderson's 150th anniversary celebrations. The following day the locomotive double-headed with WW 480 to Huntly on an excursion. On the return journey, the train was split in half and each locomotive pulled half the train side by side between Mercer and Pukekohe, the only time in New Zealand history that two steam-powered trains have operated in this manner.[ citation needed ]
In 1995, a South Island rail tour visited all the railway lines available to passenger charter. A small DH class heavy shunting engine hauled trains between Auckland and Hamilton, EF class between Hamilton and Palmerston North, and DA 1471 between Palmerston North and Wellington southbound. On the South Island, preserved DE508 pulled the train from Picton to Christchurch and the last DJ class locomotive owned by New Zealand Rail, DJ3096, was employed on the rest of the South Island itinerary. [5] The train to Hokitika ran empty for photos, then down the Bluff Branch to the Bluff Harbour Island and along the Lyttelton Line to Lyttelton Port. The final segment from Hamilton to Pukekohe was hauled by C No. 47 and DA 1471.[ citation needed ]
In 1998, with C 847 returned to the Hutt Valley, and JA 1250 not ready to re-enter service, the Society hired J 1234 from Steam Incorporated. This locomotives pulled excursions around the upper North Island until JA 1250 returned to service in 1999. J 1234 has also been used on Glenbrook Vintage Railway services, including the popular Thomas Weekends where it carries the title "Wally the Wellington Engine".[ citation needed ]
Also in 1999, the Society hired DA 1410 and DA 1431 from Steam Incorporated, for excursion service. They were used on excursions to destinations including Rotorua, Taumarunui, Helensville and Kaipara Flats.[ citation needed ]
Since 2000, the Society has continued to increase its membership and trips and tours profile. Regular trips include the "Snowball Express" from Auckland to Ohakune and Mount Ruapehu by Silver Fern railcar, the "Rally Spectators Special" from Auckland to Northland, "Fieldays by Fern" to the National Agricultural Fieldays by Silver Fern railcar, and various extended tours giving thorough coverage of both the North and South Islands.[ citation needed ]
The Whangamomona Republic Day trains run from Auckland, Hamilton and Palmerston North. The fifteen carriage train operated for the 2005 event was featured in Marcus Lush's "Off the Rails" television series.[ citation needed ] The Society has also operated short one-hour rides around the circuit formed by Auckland's Auckland–Newmarket Line, North Island Main Trunk Railway and North Auckland Line, usually pulled by JA 1250.
Overseas Tours, open to Society members, have included visits to Canada and the northern states of the US, ralmost all the states in Australia and Great Britain.
The Society's registered office is located at 38 Alfred Street, Onehunga, Auckland.
The building was built in 1873 and was originally sited on the corner of Princess St and Onehunga Mall, Onehunga, beside the Onehunga Branch. The tight curve at this point on the line resulted in the station platform having an irregular triangle shape. In 1964, the building was purchased by the society and moved to the block of land it presently occupies – land designated for the future Avondale–Southdown Line. It is believed to be the oldest railway station building in the country.[ citation needed ]
The Society operates a museum in the old Onehunga Railway Station, which includes a selection of railway photos, memorabilia and railway artefacts.
The Glenbrook Vintage Railway is a project of the Railway Enthusiasts Society, managed on behalf of the Society by a separate Charitable Trust. [3] The Charitable Trust was formed in 1972. [1]
The members of the Glenbrook Vintage Railway Trust board are appointed by the Railway Enthusiasts Society committee, or in the case of the Member's Trustee, elected the Annual General Meeting of the Railway Enthusiasts Society. [3]
Railway preservation in New Zealand is the preservation of historically significant facets of New Zealand's rail transport history. The earliest recorded preservation attempt took place in 1925, although the movement itself did not start properly until 1960.
The Canterbury Railway Society is an organisation of railway enthusiasts based in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island, best known for their operation of The Ferrymead Railway at the Ferrymead Heritage Park.

The NZR F class was the first important class of steam locomotive built to operate on New Zealand's railway network after the national gauge of 3 ft 6 in was adopted. The first locomotives built for the new gauge railways were two E class double Fairlies for the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway Company. The F class was the first class ordered by the central government, and between 1872 and 1888, a total of eighty-eight members of the class were constructed.
The NZR WAB class locomotives were steam locomotives designed, built and used by New Zealand Railways Department (NZR). Their wheel arrangement is described by the Whyte notation 4-6-4T. The locomotives were designed by NZR chief draughtsman S.H. Jenkinson as tank versions of the AB class 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive. Initially, the locomotives were separated into two classes, designated WAB for mainline work and WS for suburban work.
The Onehunga Branch railway line is a section of the Onehunga Line in Auckland, New Zealand. It was constructed by the Auckland Provincial Government and opened from Penrose to Onehunga on 24 December 1873, and extended to Onehunga Wharf on 28 November 1878. It is 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) in length and is single-track only.

The Mainline Steam Heritage Trust is a New Zealand charitable trust devoted to the restoration and operation of historic New Zealand Railways and overseas mainline steam locomotives. Regular day excursions and multi-day tours are operated over rail lines throughout New Zealand. Excursions are operated by the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch branches.
The NZR JA class was a class of fifty-one 4-8-2 steam locomotives operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR). The locomotives were built in two batches; the first batch was constructed at the Hillside Workshops at Dunedin between 1946 and 1956, while the second batch was constructed by the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) of Glasgow, Scotland in 1951. To differentiate between the two batches, the locomotives were identified by their builder.
The NZR KA class of 1939 was a class of mixed traffic 4-8-4 steam locomotives that operated on New Zealand's railway network. They were built after the success of the K class to meet the increasing traffic demands of the New Zealand Railways Department. The locomotives first appeared with distinctive streamlining, mainly to hide their ACFI feedwater heater systems.
The New Zealand DA class locomotive is a class of diesel-electric mainline locomotives operated on the New Zealand railway system between 1955 and 1989. Consisting of 146 locomotives, it is the most numerous class to ever operate in New Zealand, with five more than the AB class steam locomotive.
The NZR J class was a class of forty 4-8-2 steam locomotives operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR). Although designed to work on the lighter secondary lines, the class was frequently used on mainline express passenger trains as well as freight. When first introduced, the class boasted distinctive streamlining, which was later removed from 1947 onwards for maintenance reasons. Three of this class remained in service until the end of steam operation on 26 October 1971, when they were withdrawn and entered into preservation. This class should not be confused with the earlier J class from 1874.
The New Zealand DB class and DBR class locomotive is a type of diesel-electric locomotive built for service on New Zealand's rail network. They were built by General Motors Diesel (GMD) of Canada as a narrow-gauge version of the EMD G8 model, with seventeen locomotives constructed. Ten of these were later rebuilt into the DBR class.
The New Zealand DE class was a class of fifteen diesel-electric shunting locomotives, introduced by the New Zealand Railways (NZR) with an intention to replace steam locomotives on shunting duties with diesel power. The class was physically similar to the Tasmanian Government Railways X class, which was also of English Electric design.
The RM class was the classification used by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) and its successors gave to most railcars and railbuses that have operated on New Zealand's national rail network. "RM" stands for Rail Motor which was the common name at the turn of the 20th century for what became known in New Zealand as railcars. As many types of railcars are operated, class names have been given to each railcar type to differentiate them from others.
The New Plymouth Express was a passenger express train operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) between Wellington and New Plymouth. It ran from 1886 until 1955 and was sometimes known as the New Plymouth Mail due to the Railway Travelling Post Office carriages included in its consist. The Express was notable amongst NZR's provincial expresses as being both the first and, until the commencement of the Gisborne Express in 1942, the longest in distance travelled.

The Waiuku and Mission Bush Branches are two branches on the New Zealand railway network which are closely linked. The Mission Bush Branch connects the North Island Main Trunk railway to the Glenbrook Steel Mill.
The NZR WW class was a class of 4-6-4T tank locomotives that operated on the New Zealand national railway network. They were built for New Zealand Railways Department (NZR), and were the final development of the six-coupled tank engine in New Zealand, the penultimate class of tank locomotives to be built for NZR, and the first class of tank locomotives to be built with superheaters.
The Ferrymead 125 celebration was an event to celebrate 125 years of Rail transport in New Zealand. The event was held over a week from 17 to 24 October 1988, with trains running in, and to and from Christchurch.
