Ramaria magnipes is a coral fungus in the family Gomphaceae. It is found in western North America, where it fruits on the ground in mixed forests.
The species was described as new to science in 1974 by Currie Marr and Daniel E. Stuntz in their monograph of Ramaria species of western Washington. The type collection was made near Merritt, Chelan County, Washington in 1967. [1] The variety albidior was described by Ronald H. Petersen in 1988. [2]
The coral-shaped fruit bodies are relatively large, with dimensions of 9–25 cm (3+1⁄2–9+7⁄8 in) by 14–24 cm (5+1⁄2–9+1⁄2 in). The large stipe, which roots into the soil, is tapered to conical, measuring 7–14 cm (2+3⁄4–5+1⁄2 in) long by 4–6 cm (1+5⁄8–2+3⁄8 in) thick; [2] it stains brown in age. [3] The color of fresh fruit bodies ranges from light yellow to brownish pale orange (with white flesh), while dried specimens tend to be paler, from pale yellow to grayish orange (with pale yellow flesh); [2] the flesh has a slow and mild amyloid reaction. [3] The branches are compact (giving the fruit body a cauliflower-like appearance), with about six branches from the base. The primary branches are thick, up to 3 cm (1+1⁄8 in) in diameter, while the secondary branches are usually in the range of 0.2–1 cm (1⁄8–3⁄8 in) in diameter. Its flesh has a weakly aromatic or fabaceous (bean-like) odor, and a weakly fabaceous or bitter taste. [2]
The dimensions of the spores is in the range of 10–14 by 3–4.5 µm (averaging 11.8–3.7 µm). They are cylindrical, and smooth or with very fine cyanophilous (stainable with blue dyes) warts. The basidia (spore-bearing cells) are club-shaped, two- or four-spored with sterigmata up to 14 µm long, and measure 47–80 by 8–11 µm. [1]
The variety albidior differs from the main type by having white to yellowish branches. Its spores are somewhat cylindrical to narrowly ellipsoid, and range in size from 10.8–11.9 by 3.6–4.3 µm. [2]
Ramaria obtusissima is somewhat similar in appearance. It can be distinguished from R. magnipes by its smaller size, less intense fruit body color, and its shorter spores (9.5–11.5 by 3.5–4.0 µm). [4] R. highlandensis has larger spores (with an average length of 12.4 µm), a smaller stipe, and an aromatic odor. Found in Macon County, North Carolina, it fruits in the summer. [5]
The fungus fruits on the ground in mixed forests. It has been collected from the US states of Idaho, Washington, [1] and Tennessee. Variety albidior is found in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, where it fruits in the spring. [2] Ramaria magnipes is a snowbank fungus, meaning it is often found around the edge of melting snowbanks, or shortly after snowmelt. [6]
The species is edible, best eaten young and cooked, [7] and may have a laxative effect. [8]

Hygrophorus subalpinus, commonly known as the subalpine waxycap, is a species of white snowbank fungus in the family Hygrophoraceae. Found in the mountains of western North America, it is found growing on the ground under conifers, usually near snowbanks.
Mycena overholtsii, commonly known as the snowbank fairy helmet or fuzzy foot, is a species of fungus in the family Mycenaceae. The mushrooms produced by the fungus are relatively large for the genus Mycena, with convex grayish caps up to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter and stems up to 15 cm (6 in) long. The gills on the underside of the cap are whitish to pale gray, and initially closely spaced before becoming well-spaced at maturity after the cap enlarges. The mushrooms are characterized by the dense covering of white "hairs" on the base of the stem. M. overholtsii is an example of a snowbank fungus, growing on well-decayed conifer logs near snowbanks, during or just after snowmelt. Formerly known only from high-elevation areas of western North America, particularly the Rocky Mountain and Cascade regions, it was reported for the first time in Japan in 2010. The edibility of the mushroom is unknown. M. overholtsii can be distinguished from other comparable species by differences in location, or spore size.
Ramaria botrytis, commonly known as the clustered coral, the pink-tipped coral mushroom, or the cauliflower coral, is an edible species of coral fungus in the family Gomphaceae. Its robust fruit body can grow up to 15 cm (6 in) in diameter and 20 cm (8 in) tall, and resembles some marine coral. Its dense branches, which originate from a stout, massive base, are swollen at the tips and divided into several small branchlets. The branches are initially whitish but age to buff or tan, with tips that are pink to reddish. The flesh is thick and white. The spores, yellowish in deposit, are ellipsoid, feature longitudinal striations, and measure about 13.8 by 4.7 micrometers.
Suillus pungens, commonly known as the pungent slippery jack or the pungent suillus, is a species of fungus in the genus Suillus. The fruit bodies of the fungus have slimy convex caps up to 14 cm (5.5 in) wide. The mushroom is characterized by the very distinct color changes that occur in the cap throughout development. Typically, the young cap is whitish, later becoming grayish-olive to reddish-brown or a mottled combination of these colors. The mushroom has a dotted stem (stipe) up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long, and 2 cm (0.8 in) thick. On the underside on the cap is the spore-bearing tissue consisting of minute vertically arranged tubes that appear as a surface of angular, yellowish pores. The presence of milky droplets on the pore surface of young individuals, especially in humid environments, is a characteristic feature of this species. S. pungens can usually be distinguished from other similar Suillus species by differences in distribution, odor and taste. The mushroom is considered edible, but not highly regarded.

It has a cosmopolitan distribution, and grows on dead wood, stumps, trunks, and branches of both deciduous and coniferous trees. Its fruit body is up to 10 cm tall, made of multiple slender, compact, and vertical parallel branches. Its color is typically light tan to vinaceous-brown. All parts of the mushroom will bruise when handled. There are several lookalike corals that can usually be distinguished from R. stricta by differences in coloration, bruising reaction, or microscopic features. The fungus is inedible due to its unpleasant odor and bitter taste.

Pholiota nubigena, commonly known as the gastroid pholiota or the bubble gum fungus, is a species of secotioid fungus in the family Strophariaceae. It is found in mountainous areas of the western United States, where it grows on rotting conifer wood, often fir logs. It fruits in spring, often under snow, and early summer toward the end of the snowmelt period in high mountain forests. Fruit bodies appear similar to unopened mushrooms, measuring 1–4 centimetres tall with 1–2.4 cm diameter caps that are whitish to brownish. They have a short but distinct whitish stipe that extend through the internal spore mass (gleba) of the fruit body into the cap. The gleba consists of irregular chambers made of contorted gills that are brownish in color. A whitish, cottony partial veil is present in young specimens, but it often disappears in age and does not leave a ring on the stipe.
