The Renault Samsung SM5 is a mid-size car or large family car (D-segment in Europe) produced by the South Korean manufacturer Renault Samsung Motors, with technical assistance from Japanese automaker Nissan. Between 1998 and 2012, Renault Samsung Motors had produced 680,000 SM5 models. [1] In 2018, 10,002 models were made at the Busan plant. [2]
The first generation was launched in 1998, with the second generation introduced in 2005 and the current third generation SM5 launched in 2009. In some markets, the SM5 is sold as the Renault Latitude or Renault Safrane.

The second generation model replaced the previous model in 2005. It is based on its sibling, the SM7. The model was seen in Australia being tested on its roads. [5] The model is also based on the Nissan Teana/Maxima. [3]
In 2008–2010, the car was also sold in the Gulf States and Mexico, as the Renault Safrane. [6] The project code for the SM5 Impression is DF, while that of the Renault Safrane is A34R.
On July 1, 2003, Renault Samsung celebrated the production of the 300,000th SM5 to be manufactured in South Korea. [7]

On January 18, 2010, the third generation model was released and began to be sold along with the previous model.
Based on the Renault Laguna and designed in Seoul, the New SM5 is manufactured at the firm’s Busan plant in South Korea. [8] The SM5 was planned to be introduced in the U.S. and Canadian markets in 2014, under the Mitsubishi brand, [9] but this plan has since been canceled. [10]
It is available with a two-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, 2.5 litre six-cylinder petrol engine. [11] The SM5 uses a Nissan Xtronic CVT transmission (V6 uses 6 Speed Automatic transmission). [12]
In 2017, RSM recalled several SM5s built between October 1, 2013, and October 31, 2014 due to problems with the coolant temperature sensors. [13]
The SM5 forms the basis to the Renault Latitude sold in the Asia-Pacific region. [14] [15] The new SM5 is once again sold in the Gulf States and Mexico as the Renault Safrane. [16]
The SM6 is expected to be the SM5's successor since RSM did not announce a continuation of the model. [3] Renault Samsung has ended production of the SM5 in 2019. [17]
In November 2012, a facelifted SM5 was launched, called the SM5 Platinum. [18] The facelift included a new design to the front, revised dashboard features [1] and retains the existing Nissan engines.
In January 2015, another facelifted SM5 was launched, called SM5 NOVA. [19] The second facelift included a new Renault-style grille to the front and DRL. [19]

The Renault Trafic is a light commercial van produced by the French automaker Renault since 1980. It has also been marketed as the Fiat Talento, the Nissan NV300, the Nissan Primastar and the Mitsubishi Express. The Nissan Almera is a line of automobiles that has been manufactured by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 1995. For its early generations, the Almera is a compact car (C-segment), essentially being the European export-market version of the Pulsar for the first-generation model (N15), and the Bluebird Sylphy for the second-generation model (N16). Since the third-generation model (N17), the Almera nameplate was repositioned to a subcompact or B-segment saloon based on the V platform. The N17 Almera is marketed globally with the usage of five other nameplates for various markets.
The Nissan Teana is a mid-size sedan produced by Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It was exported as the Nissan Maxima and Nissan Cefiro to certain markets. It replaces the Nissan Bluebird, Laurel and Cefiro. It shares a platform with the Nissan Maxima and Nissan Altima which are sold in North America, as well as the Japanese market Presage minivan. The Teana has been available in East Asia, Russia, Ukraine, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Nissan X-Trail is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 2000. Since 2018, it is positioned between the Qashqai and the larger Murano.
The Renault Safrane is an executive car designed and built by the French manufacturer Renault from 1992 until 2000. Throughout its production it remained the most expensive and most luxurious Renault available, although its commercial success was limited, compared to some similar models and also compared to its predecessor. Just over 300,000 Safranes were built, compared to nearly 800,000 Renault 25. It was replaced by the Vel Satis, and to some extent, by the short-lived two-door Avantime.

The Nissan Qashqai is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) designed and produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 2006. The first generation of the vehicle was sold as the Nissan Dualis in Japan and Australia, and Qashqai in the rest of the world. The second generation, launched in late-2013 for the 2014 model year, was not sold in Japan and was badged as the Qashqai in all countries it was sold, except in the United States, where it was rebadged as the Nissan Rogue Sport. Since the third and latest generation model launched in 2021, the Qashqai is available with hybrid powertrains.
The Renault Talisman is a large family car manufactured by the French car manufacturer Renault from 2015 to 2024. It replaced the Renault Laguna, as well as the larger Renault Latitude, for which no direct replacement was scheduled. It was produced by Renault's Douai Renault Factory from 2015 to 2022 and its South Korean subsidiary Renault Korea from 2016 to 2024, where it was marketed as the Renault Samsung SM6.

The Mitsubishi eK is a kei car series from Mitsubishi Motors, based on the long-running Minica, and first introduced on October 11, 2001. The "eK" name is an abbreviation for "excellent keijidōsha" and is meant to be pronounced "ee kay", a pun which sounds like the Japanese いい軽, meaning "good kei [car]".

The Nissan Sylphy is a compact car produced by the Japanese car maker Nissan since 2000 as the successor to the Nissan Pulsar. The Sylphy has also been marketed in export markets under several other nameplates, including Pulsar, Almera, Sunny and Sentra. For the third-generation model (B17) introduced in 2012, the Sylphy model was merged with the B17 Sentra, meaning it is no longer a standalone model.
The Renault Latitude is an executive car produced by the French automaker Renault, and announced in June 2010. It debuted at the Moscow International Automobile Salon, at the end of August 2010. The Latitude served as the company's flagship vehicle, before it was replaced in 2016 by the Renault Talisman.

The Renault Arkana is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) with a sloping rear roofline produced by the French manufacturer Renault. The car debuted in May 2019 in Russia as a car based on the older Dacia/Renault Duster B0 platform. Another separate version of the vehicle was introduced in South Korea in February 2020, and is based on a more advanced CMF-B platform. The latter version of the Arkana was later introduced in core European market in September 2020 and was marketed in South Korea as the Renault Samsung XM3 from 2020 to 2022 and then Renault XM3 from 2022 to 2024.
