The Renault Talisman is a large family car manufactured by the French car manufacturer Renault from 2015 to 2024. [2] It replaced the Renault Laguna, as well as the larger Renault Latitude, for which no direct replacement was scheduled. It was produced by Renault's Douai Renault Factory from 2015 to 2022 and its South Korean subsidiary Renault Korea from 2016 to 2024, where it was marketed as the Renault Samsung SM6.
Renault ended production of the Talisman in Europe in February 2022. [3] In April 2024, Renault Korea announced that the SM6 will be discontinued in South Korea as it adopted the global diamond logo on their other models. [4]
The saloon version of the Talisman was first unveiled on 6 July 2015, at the Château de Chantilly by Renault's CEO Carlos Ghosn, [5] with an estate version scheduled to be revealed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The two versions were allegedly codenamed LFD (saloon) and KFD (estate). [6] [7]
The car is based on the CMF-CD platform, jointly developed by Renault and Nissan, and is the second Renault car to use it following the Espace. The use of the new platform is aimed at giving the Talisman a production volume advantage, that its predecessor (the Laguna) never achieved. [2] Renault executives stated that, like the new crossover, the Espace, it will not be engineered for right-hand drive markets, due to the decline in the traditional saloon market.[ citation needed ]
The use of the Talisman name is intended as a way of unifying Renault nomenclature across the world, as Renault already sells in China a similar car named Talisman. [2] [8] Renault said the name "conjures up notions of both protection and power. At the same time, Talisman is an easy word to pronounce and understand the world over". [8]
The Talisman is slightly larger than the Laguna, [5] with a lower centre of gravity. [9] Renault focused on design, equipment and comfort with the aim of regaining market share in the large family car segment. [5] Daimler personnel visited the car manufacturing site at Douai, and gave input on quality control and perceived quality. [9]
According to Renault staff, they wanted to give the car the "fluid and emotional" aspect of smaller models from the company. [8] They also tried to achieve a more "classic" styling than the used for its predecessor with the aim of gaining market share from the business fleets. [10]
The Talisman is the first large Renault car since the Renault 18 in the 1980s for which no hatchback body is available either as standard or as an option. [11] The car had originally five trim levels for Europe (Life, Zen, Business, Intens, and Initiale Paris). [12]

In March 2018, Renault unveiled a sportier trim level powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine called the S Edition, aimed to be introduced in the market by September 2018. This model shares the same engine with the Mégane RS and the Alpine A110, but it is detuned for the Talisman. [13] In South Korea, the car was launched with up to four trim levels (PE, SE, LE and RE), although their number varied according to the engine used. [14]
In March 2018, Renault Samsung introduced a minor facelift for the South Korean market, with some exterior changes, interior equipment updates and new colours. [15] In July 2019, Renault Samsung launched a new high end trim, called Premiere. [16]
The car has a four wheel steering system (called 4Control) [8] which is not available in the South Korean version. [17] It also incorporates a system (Multi-Sense) which allows adjusting all car settings between four pre-set options called Comfort, Sport, Eco and Neutral, and a user configurable option called Perso. [18]
As an optional, the Talisman has a new infotainment system with an 8.7 in (220 mm) touchscreen [9] [8] introduced in the fifth generation Espace, called R-Link 2 [12] (S-Link in South Korea). [19] The equipment also include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, traffic sign detection with excess speed warning and blind spot alert. [12]
The car scored a five star rating at the tests for Euro NCAP in 2015. [20] Gearboxes are six/seven speed dual-clutch automatic, six speed manual and CVT (the latter only available in a liquefied petroleum gas version sold in South Korea). [19] [21] Suspension is made of Pseudo MacPherson struts on front and a semi rigid axle on rear, [21] with an optional active suspension system. [22] Brakes are discs on both axles. [21]
The Talisman received a facelift in February 2020, including new LED Matrix headlamps with adaptive lighting, 10.2 in (260 mm) digital instrument cluster, 9.3 in (240 mm) 'Easy Link' portrait style touchscreen infotainment system, and a range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). [23]
The Talisman is powered by a range of petrol and diesel engines in both Europe and South Korea. The diesel engined versions were not initially sold in South Korea, while there is a liquefied petroleum gas version only for the market in South Korea. [19] [21] In August 2016, a diesel version was introduced for the market in South Korea. [24]
In November 2018, Renault announced the introduction of both petrol and diesel WLTP compliant engines. [25] [26]

Renault Samsung ordered a recall of 94,069 Renault Samsung SM6s due to concerns of loose plastic covers on accelerator and brake pedals uncovered in a safety investigation. [27] The company was fined 611 million won (US$530,000) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for violating vehicle safety regulations. [27]
The first use of the Renault Talisman name is on an unrelated concept car designed along the 1995 Renault Initiale Concept by Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément. [28] [ irrelevant citation ] Initially known as the Renault Z12 it was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2001. [29] The Talisman concept was a three-door 2+2 coupé with two gullwing doors and was fitted with a 4.5-liter V8 engine from Nissan. [29]
Renault Korea is a South Korean car manufacturer headquartered in Busan where its single assembly site is also located, with additional facilities at Seoul (administration), Giheung and Daegu.
The Renault Clio is a supermini (B-segment) car, produced by French automobile manufacturer Renault. It was launched in 1990, and entered its fifth generation in 2019. The Clio has had substantial critical and commercial success, being consistently one of Europe's top-selling cars since its launch, and it is largely credited with restoring Renault's reputation and stature after a difficult second half of the 1980s. The Clio is one of only two cars, the other being the Volkswagen Golf, to have been voted European Car of the Year twice, in 1991 and 2006.
The Renault Mégane, also spelled without the acute accent as Megane, especially in languages other than French, and also known as the Renault Megavan for an LCV in Ireland, as the Renault Scala in Iran and as the Renault Mégane Grandcoupé for the saloon in Israel, Palestinian Authority and Serbia for certain generations, is a small family car produced by the French car manufacturer Renault for the 1996 model year, and was the successor to the Renault 19. The Mégane has been offered in three- and five-door hatchback, saloon, coupé, convertible and estate bodystyles at various points in its lifetime, and having been through four generations is now in its fifth incarnation.
The Renault Trafic is a light commercial van produced by the French automaker Renault since 1980. It has also been marketed as the Fiat Talento, the Nissan NV300, the Nissan Primastar and the Mitsubishi Express. Until 2019, it was also sold as the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro by Opel and its associated company Vauxhall. From early 2022 onwards, the van is also marketed by Renault Trucks as the Renault Trucks Trafic.
The Renault Espace is a series of automobiles manufactured by Renault since 1984. For its first five generations, the Espace was a multi-purpose vehicle/MPV (M-segment), but it has been redesigned as a mid-size crossover SUV for its sixth generation.
The Renault Laguna is a large family car that was manufactured and marketed by Renault for 21 years in three body styles: hatchback, coupé, and estate. The first generation Laguna was launched in 1994, the second generation was introduced in 2000, and the third generation was built from October 2007 until 2015.
The Nissan Almera is a line of automobiles that has been manufactured by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 1995. For its early generations, the Almera is a compact car (C-segment), essentially being the European export-market version of the Pulsar for the first-generation model (N15), and the Bluebird Sylphy for the second-generation model (N16). Since the third-generation model (N17), the Almera nameplate was repositioned to a subcompact or B-segment saloon based on the V platform. The Dacia Logan is a family of automobiles produced and marketed jointly by the French manufacturer Renault and its Romanian subsidiary Dacia since mid-2004, and was the successor to the Dacia 1310 and Dacia Solenza. It has been produced as a sedan, station wagon, and as a pick-up. It has been manufactured at Dacia's automobile plant in Mioveni, Romania, and at Renault plants in Morocco, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, Russia, Colombia, Iran and India. The pick-up has also been produced at Nissan's plant in Rosslyn, South Africa.
The Nissan Teana is a mid-size sedan produced by Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It was exported as the Nissan Maxima and Nissan Cefiro to certain markets. It replaces the Nissan Bluebird, Laurel and Cefiro. It shares a platform with the Nissan Maxima and Nissan Altima which are sold in North America, as well as the Japanese market Presage minivan. The Teana has been available in East Asia, Russia, Ukraine, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Renault-Nissan MR engine family consists of straight-four 16-valve all-aluminium and water cooled automobile engines with variable valve timing co-developed by Renault and Nissan. Renault calls it the M engine. Other noteworthy features of this engine family include acoustically equal runner lengths and a tumble control valve for the intake manifold, a "silent" timing chain, mirror finished crankshaft and camshaft journals, and offset cylinder placement in an attempt for increased efficiency.
The Renault Samsung SM7 is an executive car or full-size car that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Renault Samsung Motors from 2004 to 2020.
The Renault Fluence is a compact sedan produced by the French automaker Renault. The car was produced until 2016 at the Oyak-Renault plant in Bursa, Turkey. It was produced until the end of 2018 in Santa Isabel, Argentina, for the Latin American market.
The Nissan Serena is a minivan manufactured by Nissan, joining the slightly larger Vanette. The car was engineered by Nissan's Aichi Manufacturing Division and launched in 1991 as a compact passenger van, and it grew larger with each generation over the years. Earlier versions were front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a live axle mounted on leaf springs, while the following generations are front-wheel drive or 4WD.
The Renault Koleos is a crossover SUV manufactured by the French manufacturer Renault over three generations. It is primarily manufactured in Busan, South Korea by Renault Korea.
The Nissan Sylphy is a compact car produced by the Japanese car maker Nissan since 2000 as the successor to the Nissan Pulsar. The Sylphy has also been marketed in export markets under several other nameplates, including Pulsar, Almera, Sunny and Sentra. For the third-generation model (B17) introduced in 2012, the Sylphy model was merged with the B17 Sentra, meaning it is no longer a standalone model.
The Renault Samsung SM5 is a mid-size car or large family car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Renault Samsung Motors, with technical assistance from Japanese automaker Nissan. Between 1998 and 2012, Renault Samsung Motors had produced 680,000 SM5 models. In 2018, 10,002 models were made at the Busan plant.
The Renault Latitude is an executive car produced by the French automaker Renault, and announced in June 2010. It debuted at the Moscow International Automobile Salon, at the end of August 2010. The Latitude served as the company's flagship vehicle, before it was replaced in 2016 by the Renault Talisman.
The Renault Captur is a series of subcompact crossover SUVs manufactured by the French automaker Renault. The production version of the first one, based on the B platform, made its debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and started to be marketed in France during April 2013. The Captur Concept was first shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
The Renault Arkana is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) with a sloping rear roofline produced by the French manufacturer Renault. The car debuted in May 2019 in Russia as a car based on the older Dacia/Renault Duster B0 platform. Another separate version of the vehicle was introduced in South Korea in February 2020, and is based on a more advanced CMF-B platform. The latter version of the Arkana was later introduced in core European market in September 2020 and was marketed in South Korea as the Renault Samsung XM3 from 2020 to 2022 and then Renault XM3 from 2022 to 2024.
