The Renault Suprastella is a large car that was introduced by Renault in the Spring of 1938 [1] as a replacement for the Renault Nervastella from which it inherited its mechanical elements and many other essential characteristics.
In the early 1930s, Renault introduced several models with names that ended in "-stella", which was a conscious reference to the Latin word for a "star", and "supra stella means "star above". [2]
The Suprastella was intended primarily as a large limousine, although cabriolet and coupé versions were also listed. [3] The intention was to produce the car in bare chassis form for dedicated coachbuilders to fit their own bespoke bodies: typically the car was 5600 mm long. The car was intended to demonstrate that France could still build high-end luxury cars, but because of the way history turned out the Suprastella was the last of this line, and Renault would emerge from the Second World War as a state-owned manufacturer of small cars.

A new feature was a wrap-around front grille of horizontal bars. The design was regarded by some commentators as a move towards a more vulgar "look" that would become a general feature across the Renault range during 1939. [1]
Prices through in 1938 [5] ranged from 84,000 francs for the large steel saloon with its 3210 mm wheelbase to 102,000 Francs for the longer 3720 mm wheelbase eight-seater limousine version. [1] [6] This placed the Suprastella towards the higher end of the price bracket occupied, with their "standard" coachbuilt bodies, by luxury automakers such as Delage and Delahaye, although buyers of these cars often had bodies designed independently by specialist coachbuilders and could easily spend considerably more.
The Suprastella was powered by a traditional flathead 8-cylinder in-line engine of 5448 cc which had already appeared, towards the end of its production run, in the Nervastella. Maximum power was listed at 110 PS (81 kW) at 2,800 rpm, and claimed top speed was between 135 km/h (84 mph) and 145 km/h (90 mph), according to the chassis length and body type specified. [6]
A 6500 mm long version of the Suprastella, using the longer 3720 mm wheelbase, became one of the most photographed cars in France during the 1940s. This was a cabriolet-bodied limousine with coachwork by Franay, delivered to the government in 1943 after it was decided that Marshal Pétain needed a new state car. [7] The car had high ground clearance, and one unusual feature was the step beneath each door that folded out automatically when the door was opened. [7]
The car performed its function for Pétain, and in April 1944, it was photographed containing him on his first visit as a leader to Paris. Better-known images of the state Suprastella date from August 1944 when General de Gaulle, having succeeded in entering Paris ahead of the American army, toured the city while standing in the rear part of the car and accompanied by General Lattre de Tassigny. [7] The car survived to serve the Fourth Republic, taken into government service by President Auriol. [7]
Unic was a French manufacturer founded in 1905, and active as an automobile producer until July 1938. After this the company continued to produce commercial vehicles, retaining its independence for a further fourteen years before being purchased in 1952 by Henri Pigozzi, who was keen to develop Unic as a commercial vehicle arm of the then flourishing Simca business.
Berliet was a French manufacturer of automobiles, buses, trucks and military vehicles among other vehicles based in Vénissieux, outside of Lyon, France. Founded in 1899, and apart from a five-year period from 1944 to 1949 when it was put into 'administration sequestre' it was in private ownership until 1967 when it then became part of Citroën, and subsequently acquired by Renault in 1974 and merged with Saviem into a new Renault Trucks company in 1978. The Berliet marque was phased out by 1980.
The Simca Aronde is an automobile which was manufactured by the French automaker Simca from 1951 to 1964. It was Simca's first original design, as well as the company's first unibody car. "Aronde" means "swallow" in Old French and it was chosen as the name for the model because Simca's logo at that time was a stylized swallow.
The Peugeot 202 is a supermini developed and designed by the French car manufacturer Peugeot. Production of the car ran between 1938 and 1942 and then, after a brief production run of 20 in early 1945, restarted in mid-1946. It was sold until 1949, by when it had been replaced by the 203.

Corre La Licorne was a French car maker founded 1901 in Levallois-Perret, at the north-western edge of central Paris, by Jean-Marie Corre. Cars were produced until 1947.

The Talbot Baby is a six-cylinder executive sporting car launched by the French Talbot company in 1936. The three standard body types offered were a "coach", a two-door four-seater "cabriolet" and a two-door two-seater "cabriolet". The Baby was one of the first new models to appear after the French part of the Anglo-French Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq combine was purchased, in 1935, by auto-entrepreneur Tony Lago. Production slowed with the onset of war and had ended completely by mid-1942 when the manufacturer's Suresnes plant was converted for war production.
The Berliet Dauphine is a family car produced by Berliet at their Vénissieux plant on the south side of Lyon between summer 1934 and 1939. The original cars had a 1990cc engine placing them in the 11CV car tax band, but this was quickly joined by a 1,600cc (9CV) version, and at one stage a 14CV powered version was advertised as available “sur commande”.
The Delage D6 is a six-cylinder luxury car produced by the manufacturer between 1930 and 1940 and again, after the war, between 1946 and 1953. For much of this time it was the company’s principal or, from 1946, only model.

The Nervastella is a large automobile constructed by Renault between 1930 and 1937. It was used as a state car and pictures of the president of the French Republic sitting in a Nervastella can therefore be seen in newsreels from the mid-1930s.
