Colonel (retired) Robert (Bob) Nnaemeka Akonobi was appointed military governor of Anambra State, Nigeria, from December 1987 to August 1990 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. [1]

On 27 June 1988, Akonobi reconstituted the board of Nigeria Mineral Water Industries, empowering it turn the company into a profitable private venture. [2] In 1989, he established the Anambra State Oil Palm Development Agency. [3] He officially commissioned the Anambra State University of Technology Teaching Hospital, since renamed the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, on 19 July 1991. [4] Akonobi was entangled in the struggle between the Wawa (Anambra North) and Ijekebee (Anambra South) groups, which reached its peak in a bloodbath at Nkpor junction in 1983. [5]

In a controversial book titled Akonobi Brothers and Sisters (ABS), a later governor of Anambra State Christian Onoh accused Akonobi of using his position to acquire property in Enugu. [6] Onoh, who owned 510 undeveloped lots of land, described "monumental corruption" and said the Akonobi brothers had stolen huge amounts of Federal funds. Akonibi denied the allegations. [7]

After the restoration of democracy with the Nigerian Fourth Republic, Akonobi joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and became a force in Anambra State politics. In 2002, he was coordinator of President Olusegun Obasanjo's Campaign Organization in Anambra State for the 2003 elections. [8] He became a member of the New Anambra Elders Forum, set up after a political crisis that followed the 2003 elections. [9] In February 2008 Akonobi's home in Enugu was destroyed by fire. [10]

His period in office was noted for internal PDP disputes resulting in a failure of effective government. After leaving office, he was embroiled in court cases over alleged involvement in a political murder.

Prince Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor Orizu. was a Nigerian of Igbo origin and Nigeria's second Senate President from 16 November 1960 to 15 January 1966, during the Nigerian First Republic. Orizu was also Acting President of Nigeria from late 1965 until the military coup of January 1966. He was a member of the Nnewi Royal family. His nephew Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III is the current Igwe (King) of Nnewi Kingdom. Nwafor Orizu College of Education in Nsugbe, Anambra State, is named after him.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nigerian university

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka also called UNIZIK or NAU in short is a Federal university in Nigeria. It consists of four campuses in Anambra State. Its main campus is located in the capital of Anambra State, Awka while three other campuses are located in Nnewi, Agulu and Ifite-Ogwali, Anambra State. It is one of the federal universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission. The university is named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Chimaroke Nnamani Nigerian politician

Chimaroke Nnamani is a medical doctor and Nigerian politician from Enugu State. He was Governor of Enugu State from 1999 to 2007. He subsequently served as a People's Democratic Party (PDP) Senator for Enugu East Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011 and was re-elected in 2019.

Rems Nnanyelugo Umeasiegbu, is Nigerian professor, scholar, novelist, poet and folklorist from south-eastern Nigeria.. He was also a Principal Lecturer at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (1978-1982), and Head of Department, Mass Communications, IMT, Nigeria (1982-1986) and professor of oral literature at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka as well as a consultant to Koruna Books Publications.

James Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo is a Nigerian businessman and politician who was governor of Anambra State (1979–1983) during the Nigerian Second Republic and was Senator for Enugu East in Enugu State (1999–2003). In 2003, he ran unsuccessfully in the Nigerian Presidential elections.

Christian Onoh, popularly known as CC Onoh, was a Nigerian businessman and lawyer who became governor of Anambra State in 1983 at the end of the Nigerian Second Republic. He was also the father-in-law of Emeka Ojukwu.

Chukwuedu Nwokolo Nigerian medical doctor

Chukwuedu Nathaniel II Nwokolo was a Nigerian physician specialist in tropical diseases. He was recognised for discovering and mapping out the area of paragonimiasis lung disease in Eastern Nigeria, with a study of the disease in Africa and clinical research for its control. He founded SICREP: Sickle Cell Research Programme to effectively fight the disease in Nigeria and globally.

Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first President of Nigeria.
