Runciman railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk line in New Zealand, [1] [2] serving an area which had been sold by James Runciman in 1864, with plots near the proposed railway gaining higher prices. [3]
The Auckland and Drury Railway Act 1863 had been passed by Parliament "to enable the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland to construct a Railway between the Towns of Auckland and Drury with a Branch to Onehunga in the said Province." [4] The Auckland and Drury Railway formed the first section from Auckland of what later became the North Island Main Trunk line to Wellington.
It was initially planned that the terminal of the Auckland and Drury Railway would be north-east of the settlement, [5] but a longstanding offer of Runciman's land was still open in 1864 and it was built there instead. [6]
There was debate about the location of the station as early as 1874. [7] Although the line was complete by late 1873, [8] the first passenger train didn't run until 7 October 1874 [9] and complaint continued about delays in opening the line. [10] Possibly the delay was due to threats to blockade the line to force trains to stop at Runciman. [11] Drury became a crossing point for trains on the official opening to Mercer on 20 May 1875. [12] It seems Drury station was known as Runciman, [13] though the name didn't become official until July 1879. [14] The disputes over location seem to have continued throughout the station's existence. [15] By 1895 it had cattle loading facilities. [16] The name was briefly changed to Oira in 1909. [17]
Until 1917 Runciman station was next to a level crossing on the Great South Rd. Work then began to replace the crossing with a bridge, ease the gradient and build a new Drury station between Runciman and Drury, [18] despite a protest petition [19] about the move a few chains away. [20]
Ngāruawāhia is a town in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometres (12 mi) north-west of Hamilton at the confluence of the Waikato and Waipā Rivers, adjacent to the Hakarimata Range. Hamilton City Libraries are a group of seven libraries in Hamilton, New Zealand, owned by the local city council. They lend fiction and non-fiction, magazines, audiobooks, and DVDs. From November 2016 to 9 July 2018, a substitute library compensated for the temporarily closed Central branch, and the libraries closed for over 2 months for COVID-19 in 2020. Waikato District residents living close to Hamilton City can freely use the Hamilton libraries.
Caesar Roose (1886–1967) was a New Zealand ship owner and operator, flax and timber miller, businessman, entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist. He was born in Mercer, Waikato, New Zealand in 1886.
Ōpaheke railway station was a flag station serving Ōpaheke on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand. It was opened in 1875 and closed in 1955. It was called Hunua until 7 January 1912 and, though it didn't appear in the 1875 timetable, Hunua was described as a small wayside station on the line's opening day. The station was first listed in the December 1875 timetable, being served by 2 trains a day, taking 92 minutes for the 21 mi (34 km) from Auckland. When the line was extended to Hamilton, Hunua gained an extra train and the schedule was cut to 79 minutes.
Drury railway station is a railway station under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. It is due to open in 2025 as part of the Auckland railway electrification project. It will serve the Drury area in south Auckland. The station will be located on the existing North Island Main Trunk railway line, south of Waihoehoe Road, between Flanagan Rd and Great South Rd. In 2023 KiwiRail won a court case about objections from a developer to the location of the station.
Only 0.9% of travel in Hamilton and the Waikato Region was made by bus in 2013/14. This compares with 2.3% nationally, which itself is amongst the lowest modal shares in the world. Since 2014, the average number of trips per person per year in Waikato has declined from 10.1 to 4.7 in 2021/22, though bus trips rose slightly, from 788,600 per quarter in 2021, to 823,800 in 2023.
Rangiaowhia was, for over 20 years, a thriving village on a ridge between two streams in the Waikato region, about 4 km (2.5 mi) east of Te Awamutu. From 1841 it was the site of a very productive Māori mission station until the Invasion of the Waikato in 1864. The station served Ngāti Hinetu and Ngāti Apakura. Only a church remains from those days, the second oldest Waikato building.
Raahui Pookeka-Huntly Railway Station is on the North Island Main Trunk line and the Awaroa Branch in the town of Huntly in the Waikato District of New Zealand, 65 mi (105 km) south of Auckland. It is 7.31 km (4.54 mi) north of Taupiri and 2.78 km (1.73 mi) south of Kimihia. The station was named Raahui Pookeka-Huntly for its reopening for the new Te Huia train on 6 April 2021.

Horotiu is a small township on the west bank of the Waikato River in the Waikato District of New Zealand. It is on the Waikato Plains 13 km (8.1 mi) north of Hamilton and 5 km (3.1 mi) south of Ngāruawāhia. From early in the 20th century it developed around a freezing works and other industries.

Ngāruawāhia railway station was at the junction of the North Island Main Trunk line and its Glen Massey branch, serving Ngāruawāhia in the Waikato District of New Zealand, 74 mi (119 km) south of Auckland and 10 mi (16 km) north of Hamilton. It was opened with a special train from Auckland on Monday 13 August 1877. The next stations were Taupiri 6.5 km (4.0 mi) to the north and Horotiu 5.5 km (3.4 mi) to the south.
The Mangatangi River, or Mangatangi Stream, originates on the eastern slopes of the Hunua Ranges in New Zealand and flows roughly southwards until it is joined by the Ruaotehuia Stream just north of State Highway 2 between Mangatāwhiri and Maramarua, where it becomes the Maramarua River. Mangatangi can be translated as manga tangi to stream of weeping, or as rippling stream, or babbling brook.
Ohinewai Railway Station was a flag station on the North Island Main Trunk line, serving Ohinewai in the Waikato District of New Zealand, 59 mi (95 km) south of Auckland. It was 8.18 km (5.08 mi) north of Huntly, 7.26 km (4.51 mi) south of Rangiriri and 33 ft (10 m) above sea level. It was in the village, just north of Tahuna Rd.
Te Kauwhata was a flag station on the North Island Main Trunk line, in the Waikato District of New Zealand, 54 mi (87 km) south of Auckland. It was 591.52 km (367.55 mi) north of Wellington, 3.32 km (2.06 mi) north of Rangiriri, 6.72 km (4.18 mi) south of Whangamarino and 12 m (39 ft) above sea level.
Paerātā railway station is an railway station under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. It is due to open in 2025 as part of the Auckland railway electrification project. It will serve the Paerata area, linking with the new Paerata Rise housing development. The station will be located on the existing North Island Main Trunk railway line, adjacent to the planned eastern extent of the development.
