SS Algarve was a Danish cargo steamship that was built in 1921 for DFDS. After Germany invaded Denmark in April 1940 Algarve was transferred to the UK Ministry of War Transport. In 1941 an E-boat sank her with all hands in the North Sea.
This was the second DFDS ship to be called Algarve. The first was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1899, bought by the UK government in 1917 and sunk by a U-boat that same year. [1]
In the 1920s Frederikshavn Værft & Flydedok in Frederikshavn in northern Denmark built a series of small cargo ships for DFDS. Algarve was completed in 1921. [2] Frederikshavn also built her two sister ships: Egholm in 1924 [3] and Broholm in 1925. [4]
Algarve's registered length was 254.6 ft (77.6 m), her beam was 37.2 ft (11.3 m) and her depth was 16.0 ft (4.9 m). [2] Egholm was built to the same dimensions. [3] Broholm was the same except that her beam was 6 in (150 mm) broader. [4]
The three ships had different types of steam engine. Algarve had a 175 NHP, three-cylinder triple-expansion engine, built by David Rowan & Co of Glasgow, Scotland. [2] Egholm had a steam turbine with double-reduction gearing. [3] Broholm had a 99 IHP, four-cylinder compound engine built by Svendborg Msk in Svendborg. [4]
DFDS registered Algarve in Copenhagen. Her code letters were NDCG [2] until 1934, when the call sign OXZO superseded them. [5] Her tonnages were 1,307 GRT and 751 NRT [2] until 1935, when they were revised to 1,355 GRT and 784 NRT. [6] By 1937 Algarve was equipped with a low-pressure steam turbine, powered by steam from the low-pressure cylinder of her piston engine. [7]
On 9 April 1940 Germany invaded Denmark and began its invasion of Norway. The UK Ministry of War Transport took over Algarve, registered her in London and contracted Christian Salvesen to manage her. [8]
In August 1940 Algarve left Milford Haven with Convoy OG 41, which was bound for Gibraltar. [9] She returned with a cargo of pit props, reaching Liverpool with Convoy HG 44 on 4 October. [10] She then went to Canada, where she loaded timber. She made her return transatlantic crossing with Convoy SC 9 from Sydney, Nova Scotia, which reached Liverpool on 9 November. [11]
Algarve then sailed around the north of Scotland to the North Sea. From 26 November 1940 she took part in FS (Forth South) and FN (Forth North) series convoys between the Firth of Forth and the Thames Estuary. [12]
By February 1941 Algarve had been away from Denmark for at least 10 months. She was being worked by a mixed Danish and British crew, with a Belgian second officer. [13] On 19 February the German motor torpedo boat S-102 torpedoed her off the Norfolk coast near Sheringham: [14] a part of the North Sea nicknamed "E-boat alley". [15] Algarve sank and all 27 members of her crew were killed. [14] The youngest victims were two British 16-year-olds: her cabin boy and galley boy. [13]
HMS Cheshire was a passenger ship that was built in Scotland in 1927 and scrapped in Wales in 1957. She belonged to Bibby Line, which ran passenger and cargo services between Rangoon in Burma and various ports in Great Britain, via the Suez Canal and Gibraltar. The Admiralty requisitioned her in 1939 and had her converted into an armed merchant cruiser (AMC). She was converted into a troopship in 1943, and returned to civilian service in 1948.
Ryusei Maru was a cargo steamship that was built in England in 1911 and sunk off the coast of Bali in 1944. She was launched as Bra-Kar for Fred. Olsen & Co. of Norway. In 1916 she changed owners and was renamed Havø. In 1935 she changed owners again and was renamed Mabuhay II.
SS Akaroa was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1914 in Ireland as Euripides for Aberdeen Line. When new, she was the largest ship in the Aberdeen Line fleet.
SS Clan Fraser was a British cargo steamship. She served in the Second World War and was bombed and sunk in Greece in 1941.
SS Donau was a Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) refrigerated cargo steamship that was built in Germany in 1929 and sunk in occupied Norway in 1945. In the 1930s she sailed mostly between Bremen and the West Coast of the United States via the Panama Canal.
SS Somersby was a British cargo steamship that was built in 1930, sailed in a number of convoys in the Second World War and was sunk by a U-boat in 1941.
SS Scoresby was a British cargo steamship that was built in 1923, sailed in a number of transatlantic convoys in 1940, and was sunk by a U-boat that October.
SS Tregenna was a cargo steamship that was launched in England in 1919 and sunk by a U-boat in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1940 with the loss of 33 of her 37 crew. She was laid down as War Bulldog, but the Hain Steam Ship Co bought her before she was completed and renamed her Tregenna.
MV Domala was a British cargo liner that was launched in 1920 as Magvana, but completed in 1921 as Domala. She was the first major ocean-going passenger ship to be built in the United Kingdom as a motor ship.
SS Themistocles was a UK steam ocean liner and refrigerated cargo ship. She was launched in 1910 in Ireland and scrapped in 1947 in Scotland. She was built for Aberdeen Line, White Star Line managed her for a few years, and she spent the latter part of her career with Shaw, Savill & Albion Line.
SS Hertford was a refrigerated cargo steamship that was launched in Germany in 1917, seized by the United Kingdom in 1920 as World War I reparations, and sunk by a U-boat in 1942 with the loss of four members of her crew.
SS Westernland was a transatlantic ocean liner that was launched as Regina in Scotland in 1917, renamed Westernland in 1929 and was scrapped in 1947. She began her career as a troop ship repatriating US troops after the Armistice of 11 November 1918. In the Second World War, Westernland served as a troop ship, repair ship and destroyer depot ship.
SS Benlomond was a British cargo steamship that was built in 1922 as Cynthiana, changed owners and names a number of times, and was sunk by a U-boat in 1942, with the loss of all but one of her 53 ship's company. The sole survivor, Poon Lim, drifted on a raft for 133 days before being rescued.
SS Huntingdon was a refrigerated steam cargo liner that was built in Germany in 1920 as Münsterland. The United Kingdom took her as war reparations and sold her to the Federal Steam Navigation Company, who renamed her Huntingdon. She operated between Britain and Australasia until 1941, when an Italian submarine sank her in the Atlantic Ocean.
SS Tregarthen was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland for the Hain Steam Ship Co in 1936. She was sunk with all hands by a U-boat in 1941 in the Battle of the Atlantic.
SS Pennington Court was a British cargo steamship. She was launched in 1924 as Rochdale and renamed Pennington Court in 1927. In the Second World War she carried iron ore, grain and other supplies to Britain. She was sunk with all hands in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1942.
SS Verdala was a cargo and passenger steamship that was built in Scotland in 1913. Several times she changed owners and was renamed: as Mongolian Prince in 1917, Istok in 1928 and finally Maycrest in 1940.
MV Deucalion was a Blue Funnel Line refrigerated cargo ship that was built in England in 1930 and sunk in the Second World War in 1942. She survived being damaged in the Liverpool Blitz in December 1940 and took part in two Malta convoys to relieve the Siege of Malta. She survived air attacks during the first of these, Operation Substance, in July 1941 but was lost on her second Malta Convoy, Operation Pedestal, in August 1942. This was the third of five Blue Funnel ships to be named after Deucalion, a mythological king of Thessaly in Ancient Greece.
SS Antonios Chandris was a cargo steamship. She was built in Japan in 1918 as Easterling, and renamed Antonios Chandris when she changed owners in 1937. A German merchant raider sank her in the Atlantic Ocean in 1940. 32 of her crew survived a month in two lifeboats before being rescued.
Empire Mariner was a cargo steamship. She was built in Germany in 1922 for Hamburg America Line (HAPAG), who named her Schwarzwald. In 1935 H. Vogemann bought her and renamed her Rheingold. In October 1939 a Royal Navy cruiser captured her, and the United Kingdom government renamed her as the Empire ship Empire Mariner. She survived numerous transatlantic convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1946 South American Saint Line bought her and renamed her Saint Ina. In 1948 Bristol City Line bought her and renamed her Wells City. In 1951 the Pakistani-owned East & West Steamship Company bought her and renamed her Fausta. She was scrapped in Pakistan in 1964.
