Sandra Douglass Morgan (born April 10, 1978) is an American football executive and attorney, who is currently the president of the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League. She is the first Black and Asian woman to serve as an NFL team president. Douglass Morgan previously served on the Nevada State Athletic Commission and was the chairwoman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board among other roles.

Early life

Douglass Morgan's father, Gilbert, is a Black American retired United States Air Force veteran. Her mother, Kil Cha, is Korean. [1] [2]

Education

Raised in Las Vegas, Douglass Morgan graduated from Eldorado High School, earned a bachelor's in political science and communication from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1999 before graduating from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas William S. Boyd School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 2003. [3] [4]

Professional life

Initially a defense attorney, Douglass Morgan later became a litigation attorney for The Mirage from 2005 to 2008, was the city attorney for North Las Vegas from 2008 to 2016 becoming the first Black person to hold such a role in Nevada, and director of external affairs for AT&T Services from 2016 to 2019. [5] Later she joined the Nevada State Athletic Commission, [6] the Nevada Gaming Commission [7] and later the Nevada Gaming Control Board in 2019, appointed by Governor Steve Sisolak, [8] becoming the first Black chair. [9] During her tenure she introduced reforms - as the proposal to require to gaming companies to establish written policies against harassment and discrimination towards their own employees based on factors such as sex, race, color, gender identity, and national origin - [10] and was responsible for closing and reopening casinos during the COVID-19 pandemic. [11] In this period she also served in the State COVID-19 task force. [12]

After leaving the control board [9] Douglass Morgan joined the board of Caesars Entertainment [13] as well as the boards of Fidelity National Financial, Inc., [14] Allegiant Airlines, [15] and Cerberus Cyber Sentinel. [16] Morgan joined the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP as counsel in November 2021 [17] and also ran her own consulting service, Douglass Morgan LLC. [18] In December 2021 Douglass Morgan was also named vice chair of Las Vegas’ host committee for Super Bowl LVIII, which is scheduled for February 2024. [19]

On July 7, 2022, the Las Vegas Raiders announced Douglass Morgan as the new team president. [20] The hiring made her the first black and asian female team president in the National Football League. [21] She is also the third woman and third African-American in NFL history to become a president of an NFL team. [22]

Personal life

Douglass Morgan is married to former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals safety Don Morgan. The couple has two children. [23]

The Las Vegas metropolitan area is home to many sports, most of which take place in the unincorporated communities around Las Vegas rather than in the city itself. Currently, the Las Vegas Valley has three major league professional teams: the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL), which began play in 2017 as the region's first major pro team, the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) which began play in 2020 after relocating from Oakland, California, and the Las Vegas Aces of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Oakland Athletics of Major League Baseball (MLB) plan to move to Las Vegas to play at a new ballpark which is estimated to be complete by 2028. When this relocation happens, Las Vegas will have progressed from being the largest market in the U.S. with no teams in the men's major professional leagues to being one of the smallest markets with at least three such teams within less than a decade. In addition, the National Basketball Association has publicly confirmed Las Vegas is being considered for an expansion franchise, which would potentially make Las Vegas by far the fastest market to progress from no teams in the Big Four leagues to having teams in all four leagues.

The Las Vegas Raiders are a professional American football team based in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The Raiders compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The Raiders were founded in Oakland, California, in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. The franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1982 before moving back to Oakland in 1995 where they played until their move to Las Vegas in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the U.S. state of Nevada on March 5, 2020. Because of concerns about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Nevada governor Steve Sisolak declared a state of emergency on March 12, 2020. Four days later, Nevada reported its first death. On March 17, 2020, Sisolak ordered the closure of non-essential businesses in the state, to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Grocery stores were among the businesses considered essential, and restaurants were allowed to provide drive-thru, takeout, and delivery services. At the end of March 2020, Sisolak announced a 90-day moratorium on evictions and foreclosures for commercial and residential tenants. The moratorium would be extended several times over the next year.
