The Sauber C36 is a Formula One racing car designed and constructed by Sauber to compete during the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship. The car was driven by Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein, [4] who joined the team after Felipe Nasr left the team at the end of the 2016 season. Antonio Giovinazzi drove the car in Wehrlein's place after a pre-season injury saw Wehrlein withdraw from the opening two rounds of the season as a precaution. The C36 made its competitive début at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, and uses a 2016-specification Ferrari engine. [2]

The chassis was designed by Jörg Zander, Eric Gandelin, and Nicolas Hennel with the car being powered with a customer Ferrari powertrain.

Design and development

The C36 is the first Sauber built after the team's takeover by Longbow Finance S.A. Originally intended to be the last Sauber car to be fitted with Ferrari engines, after the team secured a deal to run with customer and up-to-date Honda powered engines for the 2018 season, the deal to run with Honda powered engines was cancelled on 27 July 2017 and eventually secured another year of Ferrari engines for 2018.

The Sauber C36 used the Ferrari 061 as its power unit, as opposed to the 062 model which was developed by Ferrari for the 2017 season. When Ferrari made the decision to completely redesign the 061 model, Sauber had already started development of the C36, designing the chassis around the 061 and its predecessor, the 060, both of which had a similar shape. However, the 062 model that Ferrari created did not fit the C36 chassis; in particular, the chassis mounting points for the engine did not fit the 062 engine. Sauber chose to keep the 061 engine instead of completely redesigning the C36 around the 062 model, arguing that the performance gains offered by the 062 model were slight and that the renewed emphasis on aerodynamic grip in the 2017 technical regulations would offset any performance deficit between the 061 and 062 models. At the Spanish Grand Prix, Wehrlein finished in 7th but was relegated to 8th after receiving a 5-second penalty for failing to enter the pit lane in the correct manner. It was the first points finish of the season for the financially strained Sauber team.

Wehrlein scored another point at the extremely chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix when he finished in 10th. This was also the team's first race after their team principal, Monisha Kaltenborn quit the team after 7 seasons, during the week of the Grand Prix.

On a low note, three races saw major crashes; all of them involved Wehrlein's car. In China, Antonio Giovinazzi, subbing for Wehrlein after the German's crash in the Race of Champions, crashed heavily twice exiting the final corner. Wehrlein's race in Monaco ended on his side in the barriers at Portier when Jenson Button, subbing for Fernando Alonso while the Spaniard contested the Indianapolis 500, hit him trying to pass (both of their teammates would end their races in the barrier at Sainte Devote and engine issues ended Alonso's bid at Indianapolis), and a practice session in Hungary saw Wehrlein hit a barrier hard after catching an initial snap when his car got loose.

BMW has been involved in Formula One in a number of capacities since the inauguration of the World Drivers' Championship in 1950. The company entered occasional races in the 1950s and 1960s, before building the BMW M12/13 inline-four turbocharged engine in the 1980s. This engine was the result of a deal between BMW and Brabham, which resulted in the team's chassis being powered by BMW engines from 1982 until 1987, a period in which Nelson Piquet won the 1983 championship driving a Brabham BT52-BMW. BMW also supplied the M12/13 on a customer basis to the ATS, Arrows, Benetton and Ligier teams during this period, with various degrees of success. In 1988, Brabham temporarily withdrew from the sport and BMW withdrew its official backing from the engines, which were still used by the Arrows team under the Megatron badge. Turbocharged engines were banned by the revised Formula One Technical Regulations for 1989, rendering the M12/13 obsolete.

Michael Schumacher won his sixth Grand Prix of the season and his fifth Canadian Grand Prix win. Schumacher fended off the challenges of Juan Pablo Montoya, who later retired, and his teammate Rubens Barrichello, whose race strategy cost him a chance of victory and demoting him to third. Fresh off his victory at Monaco, David Coulthard finished second in the race and earned his fourth podium finish of the season.

Sauber Motorsport AG is a Swiss motorsport engineering company. It was founded in 1970 by Peter Sauber, who progressed through hillclimbing and the World Sportscar Championship to reach Formula One in 1993. Sauber operated under their own name from 1993 until 2005 and from 2011 until 2018. They were known as BMW Sauber from 2006 to 2010 in a partnership deal with BMW and as Alfa Romeo F1 Team from 2019 to 2023 in a partnership deal with Alfa Romeo. Sauber will return in 2024 and is set to be the Audi factory team from 2026 onwards.

The Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda has participated in Formula One, as an engine manufacturer and team owner, for various periods since 1964. Honda's involvement in Formula One began as a full team and engine entry in the 1964 season, and in 1965 they achieved their first victory at the Mexican Grand Prix. After further success with John Surtees, Honda withdrew at the end of the 1968 season due to difficulties selling road cars in the United States and Honda driver Jo Schlesser's fatal accident.

Italian motor manufacturer Alfa Romeo has participated many times in Formula One. It most recently participated as Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake while being operated by Sauber Motorsport AG. The brand has competed in motor racing as both a constructor and engine supplier sporadically between 1950 and 1987, and later as a commercial partner since 2015. The company's works drivers won the first two World Drivers' Championships in the pre-war Alfetta: Nino Farina in 1950 and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1951. Following these successes, Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula One.

Pascal Wehrlein is a German and Mauritian racing driver currently competing in Formula E for Porsche. He previously raced in Formula One for the Sauber and Manor teams. Holding dual nationality of Germany and Mauritius, he raced under the German flag in Formula One. He had previously raced in DTM, winning the title with the Mercedes-Benz team HWA AG in 2015. In 2013, Wehrlein became the youngest driver to start a DTM race at the age of 18, in 2014, he became the youngest driver to take pole position and a race win at the age of 19, and the following year, he was the youngest to win the title, at the age of 20.

He was the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship runner-up and raced with Prema in the 2016 GP2 Series, again finishing runner-up with five wins and eight overall podiums. He made his competitive debut for Sauber at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, replacing the injured Pascal Wehrlein.
