The Scottish Championships its original name until 1994 also known as the Scottish Lawn Tennis Championships,^[2] and the Scottish Grass Court Championships,^[3] was an outdoor tennis event held from 1878 through 1994. It was played at various locations throughout its duration including Bridge of Allan, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Moffat, Peebles, and St Andrews in Scotland. The dates the tournament was held fluctuated between June and August annually.

History

The Scottish Lawn Tennis Championships tournament began in 1878.^[4] It was originally held at the Grange Club^[5] in Edinburgh until 1892. It returned only one more time in 1994. In 1893 the event was played once only in St Andrews.^[6] It was then played at Moffat during the late 1890s^[7] and most of the 1900s.^[8] In 1908 it changed location again and the championships were staged at Bridge of Allan ^[9] until 1914. The championships returned to Edinburgh for a second time at what would become its semi-permanent home, Craiglockhart, from 1913, 1919 to 1929, then again 1946 through to 1960, 1963, then 1965 to 1975. During all of the 1930s the championships were staged at the Peebles Hotel Hydro courts.^[10] The championships was staged only once during its time in Glasgow in 1958.^[11]

The tournament featured both men's and women's singles competition as well as same sex and mixed doubles.^[12] The tournament survived for a period of 116 years until 1994.

Between 1997 and 2002, a tournament called The Scottish Tennis Championships was part of the ATP Challenger Tour. It was played at the Craiglockhart Tennis Centre in Edinburgh on green clay courts. The 2015 ATP Challenger Tour indoor event in Glasgow was also called The Scottish Championships.

Notes: Challenge round: The final round of a tournament, in which the winner of a single-elimination phase faces the previous year's champion, who plays only that one match. The challenge round was used in the early history of tennis (from 1877 through 1921) ^[13] in some tournaments, not all. * indicates challenger.

Anita Lizana de Ellis was a world No. 1 tennis player from Chile. She was the first Latin American, and first Hispanic person, to be ranked World Number 1 tennis player. Also, Lizana was the first Latin American to win a Grand Slam singles championship. She won the U.S. Championships singles title in 1937, defeating Jadwiga Jędrzejowska in the final in straight sets.

Dorothy Edith Round, was a British tennis player who was active from the late 1920s until 1950. She achieved her major successes in the 1930s. She won the singles title at Wimbledon in 1934 and 1937, and the singles at the Australian Championships in 1935. She also had success as a mixed doubles player at Wimbledon, winning a total of three titles. After her wedding in 1937, she played under her married name, Mrs D.L. Little. During the Second World War, she played in North America and became a professional coach in Canada and the United States. Post-war, she played in British regional tournaments, coached, and wrote on tennis for newspapers.

The 1927 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 20 June until Saturday 2 July 1927. It was the 47th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1927. It was also the Wimbledon’s 50th anniversary of the staging of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

Leslie Balfour-Melville, born Leslie Balfour, was a Scottish amateur sportsman, serving as captain, opening batsman, and wicket-keeper for the Scotland national cricket team.

The Queensland Open originally called the Queensland Championships and also known as the Queensland Lawn Tennis Championships and the Queensland State Championships was a tennis tournament played in Brisbane, Australia, from 1888 to 1994. The event was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit and WTA Tour and was played originally on outdoor grass courts then outdoor and indoor hard courts.

The Surrey Championships also known as the Surrey Grass Court Championships and the Surrey County Championships was a men's and women's international tennis event originally founded in 1882 as the Berrylands Club Tournament. In 1890 the former tournament's name was changed to the Surbiton Open that featured the first Surrey County Championships. The tournament was first played in Richmond then later in Surbiton, Surrey, England on outdoor grass courts. It ran for 73 editions from 1890 to 1981 and after a period of 18 years re-emerged as the Surbiton Trophy.

Tennis in Scotland was introduced from France in the Middle Ages. During the 20th century it was a minor sport, but has obtained some prominence due to the successes of Andy Murray and other Scots. While tennis courts are not uncommon, the country's oceanic climate has made it historically quite hard for Scottish players to develop. The only tennis inductee into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame is Winnie Shaw. However, since 2008, Tennis Scotland's membership has increased from 32,715 to 47,657 - a rise of more than 45 per cent.

The Scandinavian Indoor Championships also known as the Scandinavian Covered Court Championships and the Scandinavian Indoor Open was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament held from 1936 through 1979.

The Welsh Championships its original name until 1970 was also known as the Championship of Wales (1951), the Welsh Open (1947–50) the Greenshields Welsh Championships and Greenshields Welsh Open (1970–74) for sponsorship reasons was an outdoor tennis event held from 1886 through 1974 it was played at various locations throughout its duration including Cardiff, Newport and Penarth in Wales. The dates that the tournament was held varied between June and July annually.

The Victorian Championships its original name until 1968 it was then known as the Victorian Open Grass Court Championships or Victorian Open was a tennis event held from 1879 through 1971 it was originally played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground Lawn Tennis Club, until 1933 the venue changed to Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club Australia for the remainder of its run.

The South of France Championships its original name or Championnats du Sud de la France also known as the Championships of the South of France and the Championship of Southern France was a tennis event held from 1895 through 1971 it was originally played at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club in Nice, France. It was one of the tournaments of the French Riviera tennis circuit.

The French Covered Court Championships its original name or Championnats de France sur Court Couvert also known as the French Covered Court Open Championships and the French Indoors was a tennis event held from 1895 through 1971 in Paris, France and Lyon, France.

The Scottish Hard Court Championships its original name also called Scottish Hard Championships was a tennis event held from 1923 through 1994 in Scotland.

The 1878 men's tennis season was composed of the third annual pre-open era tour. It now incorporated 15 tournaments staged in Great Britain and Ireland the Wimbledon championships was won by challenger Patrick Francis Hadow defeating the defending champion Spencer Gore.

The 1879 men's tennis season was composed of the fourth annual pre-open era tennis season and incorporated 26 tournaments. The 1879 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley defending champion Patrick Francis Hadow, defending champion could not participate in the Challenge Round. This year saw the inaugural Irish Championships that in its early stages of development was considered as important that of the Wimbledon Championships the event was won by Vere St. Leger Goold who defeated in Charles David Barry in the final by Charles David Barry 8–6, 8–6. Important this year was the staging of six hard court tournaments some of which included the Dublin University Championships the East Gloucestershire Championships held in Cheltenham Great Britain, Nice Tennis Tournament in Nice, France and the first tournament to be held outside of Europe in Australia with the Victorian Championships.

The South of England Championships, also known as the South of England Open Championships, was an outdoor tennis event held on grass courts at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, United Kingdom from 1881 until 1972.

The men's tennis season was composed of the twelfth annual pre-open era tennis circuit incorporating 126 tournaments.

The East of Scotland Championships and later known as the TSB East of Scotland Tennis Championships for sponsorship reasons was a combined men's and women's grass court then later clay court combined men's and women's tennis tournament first established in 1887, and held at St Andrews, Fife, Scotland until 1903. In 1904 they moved to Edinburgh, Scotland until 1989 when they were discontinued.

Richard Millar Thomson was a Scottish tennis player. He won the Scottish Championships in 1894, and was a quarter finalist at the Irish Championships in 1890. He was active from 1882 to 1907 and won 8 career singles titles.
