The awards have been handed out by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) since the 2015–16 season. The awards are voted for by members of the Scottish media, with a Manager and Player of the Year selected for each of the four divisions of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) at the end of every season.

The Tartan Ball and Boot awards were awarded in 2018–19 (the only season to date) by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and are produced by the official SPFL matchday ball supplier, Mitre. The Tartan Ball is awarded to the highest goalscorer in each of the four SPFL divisions (Premiership, Championship, League One, and League Two). Gary David Bowyer is an English professional football coach and former player who was most recently the manager of Scottish club Dundee.
The Professional Footballers' Association Scotland Team of the Year is an annual award given to a set of 44 footballers in the four national tiers of the Scottish football league system, who are seen to be deserving of being named in a "Team of the Year". The award is compiled by the members of the players' trade union, Professional Footballers' Association Scotland, with the winners then being voted for by the other players in their respective divisions. The award was instituted in the 2006–07 season. In that first season, the award was voted for by the managers in each division.
The Scottish Championship, known as the William Hill Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the second tier of the Scottish Professional Football League, the league competition for men's professional football clubs in Scotland. The Scottish Championship was established in July 2013, after the Scottish Professional Football League was formed by a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League.
