Shakawe[ pronunciation? ] is a village located in the northwest corner of Botswana at the beginning of the Okavango Delta, close to Namibia and Angola. Shakawe is awakening from its former status as a sleepy little outpost on the Okavango. For travellers, Shakawe means a Botswana entry or exit stamp or a staging post for a visit to the Tsodilo Hills, 40 km away. For Southern African holiday-makers, it is most often the start of a fishing trip in the Okavango Panhandle. It also provides access to the Caprivi Strip. [1] The record high temperature ever registered in Shakawe was 39.6 °C (103.3 °F). [2] The lowest temperature registered in Shakawe was −6.1 °C (21.0 °F). [2]

Infrastructure

The village is served by Shakawe Airport. It is the gateway to the northern part of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti area. Direct charter flights are operated to the aerodrome, with the main airline in the area being AirShakawe. Flight is the most efficient form of transport in the area.[ citation needed ]

Travel by road is slow . Tarred roads have been constructed but have deteriorated over time due to under-maintenance . Bus transport is available to the main city of Maun, but this is a 5-hour travel. The large village has also been connected to the main electric grid . A bridge is also under construction and is due to be finished around the end of 2019. Various lodges and tented camps have been constructed . The main ones are Xaro Lodge, Drotsky's Cabins and Shakawe River Lodge .[ citation needed ]

Shakawe is growing rapidly starting with two shopping centers or malls. Each mall has a well stocked supermarket. Also had developed a few safari lodges . A new medium-sized shopping center is being constructed . [ citation needed ]

Demographics

As per the 2011 national census, the population of Shakawe and its associated localities was 7,506. The village of Shakawe on its own had 6,693 people. [3]

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a swampy inland delta formed where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough at an altitude of 930–1,000 m in the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. All the water reaching the delta is ultimately evaporated and transpired and does not flow into any sea or ocean. Francistown is the second largest city in Botswana, with a population of about 100,079 and 150,800 inhabitants for its agglomeration at the 2011 census. and often described as the "Capital of the North". It is located in eastern Botswana, about 400 kilometres (250 mi) north-northeast from the capital, Gaborone. Francistown is located at the confluence of the Tati and Inchwe rivers, and near the Shashe River and 90 kilometres from the international border with Zimbabwe. Francistown was the centre of southern Africa's first gold rush and is still surrounded by old and abandoned mines. The City of Francistown is an administrative district, separated from North-East District. It is administered by Francistown City Council.

Tubu, Botswana

Tubu is a village in North-West District of Botswana, 10 kilometers due east of Gumare village. It is located close to the Okavango Delta, it has a primary school, a clinic and electricity. The population was 392 in 2001 census.

Kasane Place in Chobe District, Botswana

Kasane is a town in Botswana, close to Africa's 'Four Corners', where four countries almost meet: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is at the far north-eastern corner of Botswana where it serves as the administrative center of the Chobe District. The population of Kasane was 9,244 in 2011 census.

Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve is a protected area in Botswana. It lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta and was named after Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe. Moremi was designated as a game reserve, rather than a national park, when it was created. This designation meant that the BaSarwa or Bushmen that lived there were allowed to stay in the reserve.

Sankuyo

Sankuyo is a small village in North-West District of Botswana. It is located close to Okavango Delta, and it has a primary school. The population of the village was 372 in 2001 census. It is also the name of an organisation that runs several lodges in the okavango-delta. One of these lodges is Santawani.

Mack Air

Mack Air is an Air Charter airline based in Maun, Botswana. The company has been operating in northern Botswana since 1994. In 2007 it employed 15 people and in 2019 reported 50 employees, including 19 pilots.

Nokaneng

Nokaneng is a village in North-West District, Botswana. It is located close to the Okavango Delta, and is served by Nokaneng Airport. The population of Nokaneng was 1,590 in 2001 census.

Xakao

Xakao is a village in North-West District of Botswana. It is located close to the Namibian border, where the river Okavango enters Botswana. The population was 1,049 in 2001 census.

Sepopa

Sepopa is a village in North-West District of Botswana. It is located close to the beginning of the Okavango Delta. The population was 1,519 in 2001 census.
