Sowerbyceras is a genus of ammonoid cephalopods belonging to the family Phylloceratidae. These nektonic carnivores lived during the Jurassic period, from Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian age. [1]

Description

Shells of Sowerbyceras can reach a diameter of about 6.3 centimetres (2.5 in). Form is evolute, smooth, moderately thick, with rather flattened flanks. [3]

Evolution of the genus Sowerbyceras

Sowerbyceras from the Kimmeridgian of Southern Alps (Northern Italy) show that the evolution of the Genus is strongly affected by fluctuations in sea level. In Southern Alps extinction and phyletic changes occur in transgressive phases instead of in regressive phases. Also the maxima and minima of intraspecific variability are the opposite to those of the epicontinental environment.

During times of high sea-level (transgressive phases = slight bottom currents) Sowerbyceras faunas decreased in numbers, and were smaller, with a lower thickness ratio Wb/D (whorl breadth/Diameter) and a more evolute conch. During times of low sea-level (regressive phases = higher bottom currents) there is an increase in frequency of Sowerbyceras, which were larger, with a greater t.r. Wb/D, and a more involute conch.

Morphological parameters D, Uw, wH, also vary with sea level. Sea-level lows (regressive phases) correspond to high intraspecific variability of D and lower intraspecific variability of Wb. Sea-level highs (trasgressive phases) correlate with lower intraspecific variability of D and higher intraspecific variability of Wb.

New species do not originate from a population that presents a wide range of intraspecific variability, but the speciation only occurs when this variability decreases and the population is also numerically reduced. A transgressive phase led to a numerically small population of Sowerbyceras that in turn resulted in low intraspecific variability and as a consequence speciation occurred.

This is of crucial importance for the survival of the species. In fact where, despite a low number of specimens, a high intraspecific variability is observed (at the top of the Beckeri-Pressulum Zone) Sowerbyceras became extinct in a short time. Distribution

Fossils of species within this genus have been found in the Jurassic of Algeria, France, Italy, Madagascar and Spain. [2]

Ammonoids are a group of extinct marine mollusc animals in the subclass Ammonoidea of the class Cephalopoda. These molluscs, commonly referred to as ammonites, are more closely related to living coleoids than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species. Ceratites is an extinct genus of ammonite cephalopods. These nektonic carnivores lived in marine habitats in what is now Europe, during the Triassic, from the upper-most Anisian to the lower Ladinian age.

The Hangenberg event, also known as the Hangenberg crisis or end-Devonian extinction, is a mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Famennian stage, the last stage in the Devonian. It is usually considered the second-largest extinction in the Devonian Period, having occurred approximately 13 million years after the Late Devonian mass extinction at the Frasnian-Famennian boundary. The Hangenberg event was an anoxic event marked by a layer of black shale, and it has been proposed to have been related to a rapid sea-level fall from the last phase of the Devonian Southern Hemisphere glaciation. It has also been suggested to have been linked to an increase in terrestrial plant cover. That would have led to increased nutrient supply in rivers and may have led to eutrophication of semi-restricted epicontinental seas and could have stimulated algal blooms. However, support for a rapid increase in plant cover at the end of the Famennian is lacking. The event is named after the Hangenberg Shale, which is part of a sequence that straddles the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in the Rhenish Massif of Germany.

Parastrenoceras is an extinct genus from the ammonoid cephalopod order Ammonitida, included in the family Spiroceratidae that lived during the Bajocian stage of the Middle Jurassic.

The Aquitaine Basin is the second largest Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basin in France after the Paris Basin, occupying a large part of the country's southwestern quadrant. Cephalopod egg fossil

Cephalopod egg fossils are the fossilized remains of eggs laid by cephalopods. The fossil record of cephalopod eggs is scant since their soft, gelatinous eggs decompose quickly and have little chance to fossilize. Eggs laid by ammonoids are the best known and only a few putative examples of these have been discovered. The best preserved of these were discovered in the Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay of England. Currently no belemnoid egg fossils have ever been discovered although this may be because scientists have not properly searched for them rather than an actual absence from the fossil record.

<i>Pygope</i>

Pygope is an extinct genus of brachiopods belonging to the family Pygopidae. These brachiopods lived in open sea from the Jurassic Period, Kimmeridgian age up to Cretaceous Period, Barremian age. Some of the species are characterised by a smaller or larger perforation through the entire shell in older specimens, while others just have a depression somewhere on the midline. Younger specimens of the perforated species develop a heart-shape and subsequently both extensions merge, thus encircling a central passage which is in fact entirely outside the shell.

Drzewica Formation

The Drzewica Formation is a geologic formation in Szydłowiec, Poland. It is Pliensbachian in age. Vertebrate fossils have been uncovered from this formation, including dinosaur tracks. The Drzewica Formation is part of the Depositional sequence IV-VII of the late lower Jurassic Polish Basin, with the IV showing the presence of local Alluvial deposits, with possible meandriform deposition origin, dominated in Jagodne and Szydłowiec, while delta system occurred through the zone of the modern Budki. The sequence V shows a reduction of the erosion in the Zychorzyn borehole of the Drzewica Formation, showing changes on the extension of the marine facies, where upper deposits change from Alluvial to Deltaic-Seashore depositional settings. VI-VII facies were recovered on the Brody-Lubienia borehole, with a lower part exposed on the village of Śmiłów that shows a small fall of the Sea level. The stathigraphic setting of the dinosaur tracks reported from the formation suggest a Seashore or Deltaic barrier. Body fossils reported include bivalves, palynology, fossil trunks, roots. Trunks of coniferous wood, especially Cheirolepidiaceae and Araucariaceae trees show the occurrence of vast coniferous forests around the tracksite. The association of forests and dinosaur megafauna on the Pliensbachian suggests also a colder and specially dry ecosystem. Drzewica deposits where in part to be a gigantic shore barrel, setting at the time where the Polish basin sea was at its lowest point. Other related units are Fjerritslev or Gassum Formation, Hasle & Sorthat Formation (Bornholm), upper Neringa Formation (Lithuania). Abandoned informal units in Poland: upper Sawêcin beds, Wieluñ series or Bronów series.
