The Sri Lanka women's under-19 cricket team represents Sri Lanka in international under-19 women's cricket. The team is administrated by Sri Lanka Cricket (SL).

Contents

The team played their first official matches at the 2023 ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup, the first-ever international women's under-19 cricket competition, in which they reached the Super Six stage. [1] [2]

History

The inaugural Women's Under-19 World Cup was scheduled to take place in January 2021, but was postponed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [3] The tournament was eventually scheduled to take place in 2023, in South Africa. As a Full Member of the ICC, Sri Lanka qualified automatically for the tournament. [4]

Sri Lanka named their 15-player squad for the tournament on 5 December 2022. [5] The side reached the Super Six stage, in which they finished fifth in their group. [2]

Anushka Sanjeewani is a Sri Lankan cricketer who plays for the national women's cricket team. A right-handed batter and wicket-keeper, Sanjeewani made her One Day International (ODI) debut against India on 23 January 2014. In January 2020, her name was included in the Sri Lankan squad for the 2020 ICC Women's T20 World Cup in Australia. In October 2021, she was named in Sri Lanka's team for the 2021 Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe. In January 2022, she was named in Sri Lanka's team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Cricket Qualifier tournament in Malaysia. In July 2022, she was named in Sri Lanka's team for the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. She was named in the Sri Lanka squad for the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

Morawakage Maheesh Theekshana, better known as Maheesh Theekshana, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays all three formats of the game for Sri Lanka national cricket team. He made his international debut for Sri Lanka in September 2021. Regarded as one of the best T20 bowlers in the world, his bowling action resembles that of former Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, who coincidentally happened to be his mentor with the Sri Lanka Army Sports Club, whom he has represented in the Sri Lankan domestic game.

The 2023 ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup was the first edition of the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup, hosted by South Africa in 2023. The tournament was moved from its original slot at the end of 2021 to January 2023 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sixteen teams competed in the tournament, initially divided into four groups.
