Background

The ward was created in 1950, [1] from the area of the former Exchange, Oxford, St. Ann's, St. Clement's, and St. John's wards. Its northeastern boundary ran along Great Ancoats Street, its southerneastern boundary ran along the River Medlock and Grosvenor Street, its southwestern boundary ran along Great Jackson Street, and its northwestern boundary ran along the River Irwell. In 1971, the ward was abolished, and its area became part of the Collegiate Church ward. [2]

For the entirety of its existence, the ward formed part of the Manchester Exchange Parliamentary constituency. [3] [4]
