Star Studios (formerly known as Fox Star Studios) is an Indian motion picture production and distribution company. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Disney Star (via Disney Entertainment), part of the Disney International Operations segment of The Walt Disney Company. [2] The studio produces Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and other South Asian language films through acquisitions, co-productions and in-house productions for worldwide distribution.
Star Studios was one of the 21st Century Fox and Star India film production companies that was acquired by Disney on 20 March 2019. The studio's current name was adopted on 27 May 2022 in order to avoid confusion with Fox Corporation.
Starting with the international release of Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022), all of Star Studios' films are now handled internationally by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. [3] [4] [5] [6]
The studio was founded in March 2008 as a joint venture between 20th Century Fox and co-owned by Star India. In 2009, the studio acquired the rights for My Name Is Khan , the studio’s debut film as distributor. [7] [8]
In 2011, Fox Star Studios entered the Tamil film industry with Engaeyum Eppothum , as co-producing and distributing partner for AR Murugadoss's AR Murugadoss Productions. [9] In 2013, the studio released Tamil-feature Raja Rani, which won four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. [10] In 2015, the studio entered 9-film deal with Dharma Productions as a co-producer and distributor. [11] In 2016, Kapoor & Sons was released as the first film under the arrangement. [12] The same year, the studio won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for its in-house production Neerja . The studio also released M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story , the biopic of then Indian Cricket captain MS Dhoni. In 2017, the studio entered a three-film deal with Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. [13] In May 2018, the studio entered multi-film deal with Akshay Kumar's Cape of Good films and had set Mission Mangal with Kumar attached to star. [14] In 2019, the studio released Chhichhore which it co-produced with Nadiawala Grandson Entertainment had won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi 2019. [14]
In early 2020, the studio had released Chhapaak starring Deepika Padukone, sports-drama Panga starring Kangana Ranaut and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Shikara all of which are lukewarmly received by the audience. [15] [16] [17] The studio had released Baaghi 3 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the film ended its box-office run as the second-highest grossing Hindi-film of 2020. [18] In June 2020, Star India, the parent company of the studio decided to release the rest of the 2020 slate directly on the sister streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar under Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex Initiative. The films released on the platform were Dil Bechara , Lootcase , Sadak 2 , and Laxmii . [19] In late 2020, several reports indicate The Walt Disney Company's was not going greenlighting newer films with the studio ceasing its operations after the releases of Tadap and Brahmāstra as the studio's CEO Vijay Singh has resigned. [20] [21] In December 2021, the studio released Tadap. [22] In February 2022, the studio ended speculations of ceasing operations by announcing Babli Bouncer starring Tamannaah Bhatia, co-produced with Junglee Pictures. [23] In March 2022, the company announced the release of Kaun Pravin Tambe? on Disney+ Hotstar. [24] Soon after the studio started production on Manoj Bajpayee starrer Gulmohar . [25] Later that month, the studio along with Dharma Productions had acquired the remake rights for blockbuster Malayalam film Hridayam in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. [26]
On 27 May 2022, Fox Star Studios was renamed Star Studios, as part of the removal of the "Fox" name from studios that had been acquired from 21st Century Fox by Disney. [27]
The Fox Star Studios logo was based on the 1994-2009 20th Century Fox logo (the logo appeared in Quick Gun Murugun & and the end of My Name is Khan) and the 2009 style was made by the now-defunct Blue Sky Studios (who made the 2009-2020 20th Century Fox logo), the 2010-2022 Fox Star Studios logo (albeit with the News Corporation byline removed in 2013) debuted in My Name is Khan and the last film to use is Kaun Pravin Tambe?.
On 27 May 2022, it was reported that Disney had internationally begun to phase out the "Fox" name from the studio's branding as it is no longer tied to the current Fox Corporation, with Fox Star Studios renamed simply to Star Studios.
The current print & on-screen Star Studios logo is based on 20th Century Studios logo and the 2021 Star logo from the Star hub of Disney+. Branding elements associated with the studio, including the searchlights, monolith, and fanfare, will remain in use. The first film that carries the new Star Studios name is Brahmāstra: Part One Shiva . Star Studios print and front-facing logo (similar to the 2020 Searchlight Pictures print logo) debuted in the posters for the film, as well as the trailer for Babli Bouncer . The on-screen logo debuted on 9 September 2022, with Brahmāstra: Part One and later appeared in Babli Bouncer and Disney+ Hotstar original Hindi film Gulmohar , based on Picturemill and Blue Sky's animations.
Based on the original 20th Century Studios fanfare composed by Alfred Newman and adapted by David Newman, the current Star Studios fanfare retains a similar composition with added Indian instruments such as sitar, sarod, tambura, sahnai, sarangi, and tabla. [28]
UTV Motion Pictures was the feature film unit of UTV Software Communications founded by Ronnie Screwvala and Zarina Screwvala in 1996 as UTV Motion Pictures Plc., the film distribution division of UTV Software Communications. It was one of the leading film studios in India and one of the largest production studios in South Asia. The studio's activities spanned creative development, production, marketing, distribution, licensing, merchandising, and worldwide syndication of films in Indian territories. It was also a distribution label of Disney for feature films produced by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in India.

Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language fantasy action-adventure film written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, dialogues written by Hussain Dalal and produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Hiroo Yash Johar, Namit Malhotra and Mukerji – under Dharma Productions, Starlight Pictures and Prime Focus in association with Star Studios, along with Ranbir Kapoor and Marijke DeSouza. The film serves as the first instalment of a planned trilogy, which is itself planned to be part of a cinematic universe titled Āstraverse, and stars an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy and Nagarjuna with Shah Rukh Khan in a special appearance. Drawing inspiration from tales in Hindu mythology, the story follows Shiva, an orphan musician with pyrokinetic powers who discovers that he is an astra, a weapon of enormous energy. He attempts to prevent the strongest of the astras, the Brahmāstra, from falling into the hands of dark forces that share a history with him.
Dil Bechara is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age tragedy romance film directed by Mukesh Chhabra in his directorial debut, and produced by Fox Star Studios, with a script written by Shashank Khaitan and Suprotim Sengputa. Based on John Green's 2012 novel The Fault in Our Stars and its subsequent 2014 American film adaptation, the film stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi as terminal cancer patients with an ensemble supporting cast, while Saif Ali Khan makes a cameo appearance. The film marks Rajput's unexpected posthumous appearance, following his death on 14 June 2020.
Ahan Shetty is an Indian actor who works in Hindi films. The son of actor Suniel Shetty, he began his acting career with the action romance film Tadap (2021). which earned him the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Male.
Laxmii is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language horror comedy film written and directed by Raghava Lawrence, marking his directorial debut in the Hindi film industry. A remake of his own Tamil film Kanchana (2011), it stars Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani, while Ayesha Raza Mishra, Rajesh Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar and Sharad Kelkar play pivotal roles. The film revolves around a man who gets possessed by the ghost of a transgender person. Kumar, also produced the film under his Cape of Good Films and Fox Star Studios, along with Tusshar Kapoor's newly launched production company, Tusshar Entertainment House and Shabinaa Entertainment. Lawrence co-wrote the script along with Farhad Samji, Sparsh Khetarpal, Tasha Bhambra, with Samji adapting the screenplay and dialogues to the Hindi version. The film was announced in January 2019, whilst the principal photography began in April 2019 and ended in March 2020.
Tadap (transl. Yearning) is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language romantic action drama film directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment banner, with Fox Star Studios serving as distributor and co-producer. A remake of the Telugu film RX 100 (2018), the film stars debutant Ahan Shetty and Tara Sutaria. The film released theatrically on 3 December 2021 to mixed reviews with praise towards its music, performances and action sequences but criticism towards screenplay and dialogues.
Kaun Pravin Tambe? is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed by Jayprad Desai. It is based on the life of Indian cricketer Pravin Tambe. The film stars Shreyas Talpade and premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 1 April 2022.
Babli Bouncer is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and starring Tamannaah Bhatia. Produced by Vineet Jain and Amrita Pandey under the banners Star Studios and Junglee Pictures, the film follows the journey of Babli, a street-smart woman who becomes a bouncer at a nightclub. It premiered on 23 September 2022 on Disney+ Hotstar.
Star India CEO Sanjay Gupta will be Disney's country manager of India and will also have direct responsibility for the Indian studio business, Fox Star Studios.
