Start Static is the debut studio album by American rock band Sugarcult, released on August 21, 2001 by Ultimatum Music. It was their first album to receive mainstream success.
Vocalist/guitarist Tim Pagnotta founded Sugarcult in Santa Barbara, California, in 1998 with drummer Ben Davis. Bassist Airin Older joined, followed by guitarist Marko DeSantis. [1] They released two albums, Eleven (1998) and Wrap Me Up in Plastic (2000), and two EPs, Get Street Cred (1999) and Songs About Girls (2000). [2] The band spent October 2000 to February 2001 working on new material, including tracks such as "Stuck in America", "Crashing Down" and "Lost in You". In total, they had 24 songs to choose from for inclusion on their next album. [3]
The group sent demos to record labels, [4] eventually signing to independent label Ultimatum Music in January 2001. [2] Recording for their next album took place at Rumbo Recorders in Los Angeles, California with producer Matt Wallace [5] in March and April 2001. He was helped by engineer Mike Landolt and assistant Posie Muliadi. Davis did additional production and engineering, as well as produce and engineer "I Changed My Name" and the hidden track. Wallace mixed the recordings with assistant Brett Nolan at Can Am Studios in May, before they were mastered by Alan Yoshida at Oceanway/JVC Mastering. [6]
Musically, Start Static has been described as pop punk, [7] pop rock [8] and power pop, [9] with influences from punk rock, [8] [9] drawing a comparison to American Hi-Fi. [10] DeSantis gave the album its title, which Pagnotta said was a slang term for beginning a fight. [11] DeSantis also liked that the Static part could be interpretated as the "sound your radio makes when you can’t tune in a station". [12] The songs tackle the themes of disbelief, escapism and recklessness. [9] With the lyrics, Pagnotta didn't feel comfortable being completely vulnerable and that he was unsure how to process his thoughts. [11] "You're the One" opens with an Elvis Costello-esque riff; Pagnotta said he intentionally reused the riff from Costello's "Radio Radio" (1978). [13] [14] "Stuck in America" is about being young and wanting to leave your town. [15] "Saying Goodbye" is about wanting a change of scenery; [7] The Boston Phoenix writer Sean Richardson said it stars a "no-luck teenage runaway who sleeps with the boys for free". [16] "Lost in You" is a nostalgic view of a past relationship, and was compared to the Goo Goo Dolls. [7] Richardson wrote that the girl from "Saying Goodbye" returns in ""Pretty Girl (The Way)", adding that by this point, she was "not as much fun to sympathize with". [16] Discussing the album's hidden track "Underwear", DeSantis said they used it to show of their wider musical palette instead of being restricted to pop-punk. [17]
On June 18, 2001, the band's next album was announced for release in August; its track listing was also revealed. On July 18, the group revealed the album's title: Start Static. [18] Preceded by the radio single "Stuck in America" on August 6, [5] Start Static was released on August 21. During the month, a music video was filmed for "Stuck in America", directed by Shawn Foster. [19] The band re-recorded "Bouncing Off the Walls" with producer Mark Trombino, which was released as a radio single on February 5, 2002; [20] the CD single featured "How Does It Feel" and "Killing Me". [21] The group filmed a music video for "Bouncing Off the Walls" in Hollywood. [22]
Around this time, they gained exposure when four songs from Start Static appeared in the film Van Wilder (2002), the soundtrack to which featured "Bouncing Off the Walls" and was also released through Ultimatum. [23] The "Bouncing Off the Walls" video, directed by Steven Oritt, [5] premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on April 4, and featured Tara Reid and Ryan Reynolds, both of whom had starred in Van Wilder. [22] "Pretty Girl (The Way)" was released as a radio single on July 29; [5] the CD single featured "Over Now", "Say I'm Sorry" and the music video for "Pretty Girl (The Way)". [24] The video was released online on August 6; [25] it was filmed in Trinidad by director Orbitt. [5]
Davis went to rehab [11] and was temporarily replaced by Lefty drummer Kenny Livingston in September; [26] Davis officially left the group by Thanksgiving. [27] In January 2003, the band signed to Epitaph Records to release Start Static in Europe. [28] While in London, a second video for "Bouncing Off the Walls" was made, directed by Orbitt, and featured live footage and the band around the city. [5] "Stuck in America" was released as a single in the UK on March 10; [29] the CD single featured "You're the One", "No Action" and the music video for "Stuck in America". [30] On March 17, Epitaph made the album available for streaming, before releasing it in Europe on March 24. [31] In 2011, the band played 10th anniversary show for Start Static, which included Davis performing with them. [32]
Following the album's mixing sessions, the band played a handful of regional shows in May and June 2001. The group had initially planned to only play the first eleven shows of the Warped Tour, until they were added to the remaining dates from late June to early August, save for a one-week support slot for Blink-182 in late July. [18] They embarked on a month-long US tour, running into mid-September when they began played radio station festivals until early October. [19] In October and November, the group toured the US with Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger and Lefty, before embarking on a two-week tour with Good Charlotte and Mest in November and December. The band closed the year with a handful of headlining shows. [33] In January 2002, the band toured with Home Grown on their US tour. [22]
Following this, the group went on a five-week national US tour supporting Unwritten Law in February and March, before spending the remainder of March playing headlining shows. [22] The band played an assortment of shows with Fairview and Lefty in April, before embarking on a six-week US tour. Older dropped off the tour, citing personal reasons, with Billy Lee from the 65 Film Show and Tim Cullen from Summercamp filling in his position. The band took a short break, before playing a two-week stint on the Warped Tour in July. After Warped, the group went on a US tour with Less Than Jake in August, and appeared at Punk-A-Phenomenon. [22] [34] Between October and December, the band supported the Ataris on their headlining US tour. [35] On November 28, the band appeared on The Late Late Show , which was followed by a performance on Last Call with Carson Daly . Start Static was met with generally favourable reviews from music critics. AllMusic reviewer Tom Semioli felt that the band had "mastered the don't-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach to near perfection". [9] Dan Aquilante of New York Post wrote that almost "every song has the potential to be a single", and aside from the "few retro passages" that "twist your brain - in that what-song-is-that-like way", he saw it as an original effort from the band. [42] Rock Hard writer Marcus Schleutermann said that the tracks have a "catchiness of various bravo punk bands, but in contrast, are provided with charismatic rough edges". [39] Sacramento News & Review 's David Jayne cautioned listeners: "When 'You’re the One,' 'Stuck in America,' 'Saying Goodbye' and the very catchy 'Bouncing off the Walls'—with melodies you’ll have a hard time escaping—get stuck in your head, beware". [40]
CMJ New Music Report writer Amy Sciarretto said "Bouncing Off the Walls" was an outlier, as the rest of the album does not "pogo up and down like they've been sucking down cases of Mountain Dew for three days straight". She said despite comparisons to Cheap Trick and the Knack, the album "never sounds retro". [10] Ink 19 reviewer Marcel Feldmar said it was "not bad, it’s Get Up Kids fun, all bright and poppy," telling listeners to ignore some of the song titles, "because the tight melodics and fast forward dynamics keep my head moving and my face smiling". [13] Melodic webmaster Johan Wippsson complimented Wallace's production, and said that the "standard of the songs [is] good enough to makes this record interesting". [8] Richardson said he band's "hefty arena punk [sound] is more than serviceable throughout, hitting its fist-pumping high point on the flippant 'How Does It Feel.' As finger-licking pop metal goes, not quite Sugar and not quite the Cult — but not half bad, either". [16]
The staff at Impact Press told the listener not to be "surprised to see a video from these guys someday as they are continuing the formula that has been used time and time again by other Green Day wannabes". [43] Drowned in Sound 's Peter White, meanwhile, called the album a "festering wreck of a record, it oozes stolen genius. It doesn’t bolster your senses with never ending mesmerising noise, rather sliding Tom Petty punk glimmers through your radio friendly sockets". [38] PopMatters contributor Andrew Ellis wrote that instead of "being a mere clone of what’s come before, what makes their music sustainable in such a crowded scene is the solid songwriting" of Pagnotta. He added that the guitar riffs were "crunchy and economic" as Pagnotta "has an interesting knack for filling his three-minute pop-punk tunes with more than your average teen-angst lyrics". He felt that "what the music (and the name) perhaps lacks in originality, it more than compensates for in well-written, high-energy tunes that remain memorable long past the customary first few plays". [7]
By December 2003, Start Static had sold 300,000 copies. [44] Cleveland.com ranked "Bouncing Off the Walls" at number 76 on their list of the top 100 pop-punk songs. [45]

Descendents is an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in Manhattan Beach, California, by guitarist Frank Navetta, bassist Tony Lombardo and drummer Bill Stevenson as a power-pop/surf punk band. In 1979, they enlisted Stevenson's school friend Milo Aukerman as a singer, and reappeared as a melodic hardcore punk band, becoming a major player in the hardcore scene developing in Los Angeles at the time. They have released eight studio albums, three live albums, three compilation albums, and four EPs. Since 1986, the band's lineup has consisted of singer Milo Aukerman, guitarist Stephen Egerton, bassist Karl Alvarez, and drummer Bill Stevenson.
The Process of Belief is the twelfth studio album by the American punk rock band Bad Religion. It was produced by its leaders Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz, and was released on January 22, 2002, through Epitaph Records. After touring in support of its previous studio album, The New America (2000), Gurewitz re-joined Bad Religion in 2001 after a seven-year hiatus. The band re-signed with Epitaph, and then began work on its first album for the label in over eight years. The album also marked the first album to feature Brooks Wackerman, who replaced former drummer Bobby Schayer.
The Bouncing Souls are an American punk rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, formed in 1989. By the time of their acknowledgment by the national punk rock scene, they had reignited a "pogo" element to New Jersey punk rock by playing fast light-hearted songs, a model followed by various other local bands.
Punk-O-Rama was the title given to a series of ten compilation albums published by Epitaph Records. The first volume was released in 1994, the second in 1996, and the rest annually from 1998 to 2005. The albums included artists from Epitaph's roster as well as from its subsidiary label ANTI- and its partnership labels Hellcat Records and Burning Heart Records. In total the series included 257 songs contributed by 88 different artists.

Formed by members of Reset, Simple Plan spent over a year recording their first album with producer Arnold Lanni. It is a pop-punk record that revolves around being an outcast, drawing comparisons to Blink-182, Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. After signing with major label Atlantic Records, "I'm Just a Kid" was released as a single in February 2002, with No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls following on March 19. It received a mixed reaction from music critics, with some commenting on the lack of originality and others praising the production.
From Here to Infirmary is the third studio album by American punk rock band Alkaline Trio. It was their first album for Vagrant and their only album with Mike Felumlee, who replaced their previous drummer, Glenn Porter. When Felumlee left the band shortly after the album's release, Atom Willard filled in on tour and appeared in the music video for "Private Eye", before Derek Grant became their new permanent drummer.
Palm Trees and Power Lines is the second studio album by American rock band Sugarcult, released through Fearless and Artemis Records. A year after the release of their third studio album Start Static (2001), Kenny Livingston became their new drummer. Shortly afterwards, they started writing new material for the follow-up album. Recording started in March 2003 and ended in September 2003, in between various tours. Sessions were held at Full Kilt Studio and Third Stone Recording, both in North Hollywood, California, with producer Gavin MacKillop. Palm Trees and Power Lines is a pop-punk and power pop album that recalled the work of Blink-182.
The Matches are an American rock band from Oakland, California, active from 1997 to 2009. Formed as the Locals, the group changed their name after five years to avoid conflict with a Chicago band of the same name. As the Matches, they self-released their debut album E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals in 2003, then signed to Epitaph Records who re-released it the following year. Decomposer followed in 2006, seeing the band move from their pop punk roots in a more idiosyncratic direction with contributions from nine different record producers; it reached no. 18 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. With their third album, A Band in Hope (2008), their sound became even more heavily layered and experimental; it was their only release to chart on the Billboard 200, reaching no. 179.
Clarity is the third studio album by American rock band Jimmy Eat World. It was released on February 23, 1999, through Capitol Records, with which Jimmy Eat World clashed several times while recording their second studio album Static Prevails (1996). The band recorded a follow-up with producer Mark Trombino in May and June 1998, and were free to make it however they wanted without interference from Capitol. The recording sessions began at Sound City in Van Nuys, California, before moving to Clear Lake Audio in North Hollywood, California. Clarity, which is described as an emo, pop punk, and punk rock release, marked the beginning of frontman Jim Adkins' tenure as the band's main vocalist, taking over from guitarist Tom Linton.
The Epoxies were an American new wave band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2000. Heavily influenced by new wave, the band jokingly described themselves as robot garage rock. Members included FM Static on synthesizers, guitarist Viz Spectrum, lead singer Roxy Epoxy, bass guitarist Shock Diode, and drummer Ray Cathode. They grew in popularity due in large part to extensive touring in both the United States and Europe where they showcased frantically paced, highly energetic on-stage productions. They were known for using special effects for their live act and sporting home-made costumes, sometimes made mostly of duct tape.

Anthem is the fifth studio album by American ska punk band Less Than Jake, released on May 20, 2003 on Sire Records, a Warner Bros. imprint. A year after their fourth studio album Borders & Boundaries (2000), the band had spent sometime at their practice space writing new material; by the middle of 2002, the band said their next album would be with Warner Bros. Records. Following a meeting with Rob Cavallo, he was enlisted as the producer for the album. Sessions were held at Piety Street Recording in New Orleans and Morning View Studio in Malibu, California, occurring between October and December 2002.
Motion City Soundtrack is an American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1997. The band's line-up consists of vocalist and guitarist Justin Pierre, lead guitarist Joshua Cain, keyboardist Jesse Johnson, bassist Matthew Taylor, and drummer Tony Thaxton. Over the course of their career, the group has toured heavily and released six studio albums, the majority on independent label Epitaph Records. The band's sound, usually described as pop-punk and/or emo, makes notable use of the Moog synthesizer. Pierre mainly handles the band's lyrics, which often touch on themes of anxiety, alienation, relationships, and self-destructive behavior.
Wood/Water is the fourth and final studio album by American rock band the Promise Ring. It was released by Anti- on April 23, 2002. While touring in support of their third studio album, Very Emergency (1999), the Promise Ring were due to leave for a European tour; frontman Davey von Bohlen was diagnosed with meningioma on the day of departure. As a result of a post-surgical infection, the band could not tour for the remainder of 2000. In early 2001, the Promise Ring made demos with Kristian Riley, and then recorded a track with producer Mario Caldato Jr. in Los Angeles, California. The Promise Ring flew to the UK for six weeks of recording with Stephen Street, before returning to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for further recording. The album moved away from the emo sound of the band's past works into alternative country, indie rock, and pop territory.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation is the fifth studio album by American punk rock band the Bouncing Souls. It was recorded in November and December 2000. It was released on May 22, 2001. This was the first album to feature new drummer Michael McDermott, formerly of Murphy's Law and Skinnerbox. The song "Manthem" is featured in the video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.
Anchors Aweigh is the sixth studio album to be recorded by American punk rock band the Bouncing Souls. It was released on August 26, 2003, though Epitaph Records. Following the release of their fifth studio album How I Spent My Summer Vacation (2001), bassist Bryan Kienlen ended an intimate relationship and wrote new material as a result of it. Recording took place at Lakeview Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts, and Water Music, Hoboken, New Jersey, with John Seymour as the main producer, and Kienlen and guitarist Pete Steinkopf as co-producers. Anchors Aweigh is a pop-punk and punk-rock album that has a darker sound than its predecessor; the band experimented with melodies and rhythms during the writing stage.
The Menzingers are an American punk rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania, formed in 2006. The band consists of Greg Barnett, Tom May, Eric Keen (bass) and Joe Godino (drums). Burning at Both Ends is the third studio album by American pop punk band Set Your Goals. Recording for the album began in October and November 2010 with producer Brian McTernan in Baltimore, Maryland. The group took a break to support You Me at Six on their UK tour in December; they were unable to fly back until the end of the month due to bad weather to finish the album. The sessions resumed and ran in to mid-January when the band ran out of studio time. They briefly tracked with second producer Mike Green in Los Angeles, California. Following recording, the band embarked on two US tours, one supporting Parkway Drive and the other alongside August Burns Red.
