The Steel City Sparks was an American women's soccer team. The team was a member of the Women's Premier Soccer League, the third tier of women's soccer in the United States and Canada.

History

The Sparks formed in 2003 to develop soccer for women in the Pittsburgh area. Their first coach was Erik Ingram. In 2005, the team left the league, and the franchise was terminated. [1]

The Sparks played their home games at the Ellis Athletic Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. [2]

The Sparks squad comprised of former WUSA, W-League, and international players, [3] including Annie Lowry, Katie Barnes, Chrissie Abbott and Lisa Stoia. [4]

She won gold medals with the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008 Beijing Olympics, and 2012 London Olympics. She has also finished third place or better with the US at the 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women's World Cups. She was a finalist for the 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year award, and won an NCAA Women's Soccer Championship with Notre Dame in 1995. Shannon Boxx announced her retirement from international and club soccer after winning the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Tyler Palko is a former American football quarterback. Palko was the starting quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh from 2004 to 2006. The left-handed thrower was not selected in the 2007 NFL Draft, but was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals, Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL), Pittsburgh Steelers, and Kansas City Chiefs.
