San Pedro featured a network of streetcars between 1903 and 1958. The establishment of the Port of Los Angeles in the early 1900s spurred the development of the nearby city, and electric streetcars provided local transit services for workers and later military personnel. Pacific Electric was the primary operator in the city.
California Pacific, a subsidiary of the Los Angeles Traction Company, began interurban service to San Pedro over a narrow-gauge line in 1903. [1] [2] Pacific Electric opened their competing San Pedro via Dominguez Line on May 21, 1905. [3] Pacific Electric had additionally opened a line east to Long Beach, providing a connection between the two cities and allowing for trains to be run though on the Long Beach Line. All streetcar operations in San Pedro were consolidated under Pacific Electric in 1911. Several services offered a one-seat ride from San Pedro to downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Balboa. [4] The company ran special services to serve Catalina Island steamships. The last interurban service to San Pedro ran under the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority on December 7, 1958.
This line ran from the Pacific Electric depot at Sixth and Palos Verdes to Point Firmin via Sixth and Pacific. It was constructed between 1905 and 1906 as far south at Fourteenth Street and completed to Point Firmin in 1907. [2] [5] While it was the most popular route in San Pedro, competition from parallel bus operators tempered its ridership potential. Service ended in October 1934 and tracks were removed in the following years. [5] [6]
Cars were probably routed through to the La Rambla Line at its inner terminus. The line was entirely rerouted in October 1916, taking it off of city streets and to the Outer Harbor via a private right of way. [7] Company records indicate service ended on the line after April 21, 1924, and the final years of service were very informal. [7] [5] The line continued to see infrequent passenger service whenever the U.S. fleet was stationed at San Pedro, as interurban cars from Los Angeles would end their runs at the Harbor. This finally ended after September 1940. [7]
Opening in 1906, this was one of the three major streetcar routes in San Pedro. Cars ran from Fourth and Palos Verdes via Fourth, Front, Sixth, Pacific, Fifth, a private right-of-way, and Alameda to First. Tracks on Fourth, Front, and Fifth were abandoned around 1915 and was likely routed through to the Outer Harbor Line. [7] In 1928, this line accounted for 38% of San Pedro's local passenger traffic with just over 20% of the system's route miles. [5] The last car operated over the line on January 23, 1938. This was the final streetcar line to operate in San Pedro. [8] [2] [7]
A minor line for local service, this line ran from San Pedro's Pacific Electric station via Front Street, a private right-of-way, another private right-of-way adjacent to Wilmington & San Pedro Road, B Street, and a private right-of-way to Wilmington Station. By 1911, service had been reduced to a single round trip in the afternoons. Pacific Electric was granted permission to end service in November 1931, though the final years of this is not well documented. While local service was discontinued, tracks were maintained and were seeing regular use by 1942 as the bridge route over the harbor was deemed hazardous during wartime. [9]
Originally an independent service, most cars had stopped running on Fourteenth Street by 1915, though it was still used as the ending of runs from the Outer Harbor Line. [7] Rails remained in place until 1936. [5]
By the time of the Great Merger in 1911, service had likely been reduced to franchise service. The line was fully abandoned around May 5, 1915. [7]
The Waterfront Red Car was a heritage streetcar operated by Port of Los Angeles. It ran over a former segment of the Pacific Electric route using electrified replica rolling stock.
South Pasadena Local was a local streetcar line operated by the Pacific Electric Railway between Downtown Los Angeles and South Pasadena, California by way of the Arroyo Seco Route. This was one of four lines that connected the two cities.
Glendale–Burbank is a defunct Pacific Electric railway line that was operational from 1904 to 1955 in Southern California, running from Downtown Los Angeles to Burbank via Glendale. Short lines terminated Downtown and in North Glendale, including the popular Edendale Local.
The Pasadena Short Line was a passenger railway line of the Pacific Electric Railway. It ran between Downtown Los Angeles and Downtown Pasadena, California, through Eastside Los Angeles along the foot of the eastern San Rafael Hills to the western San Gabriel Valley. It was in service under the company between 1902 until 1951, though it had operated under different companies back to its beginnings as a horsecar line. The route, designated by the company as line 2, was the key component of the company's Northern Subdivision.
The Upland–San Bernardino Line was an interurban line operated by the Pacific Electric Railway between Downtown Los Angeles and San Bernardino, California. This line also had shorter service that terminated before the end of the line at Baldwin Park, Covina, and San Dimas. Though service along this line in its entirety was discontinued in November 1941, it stands as the fourth-longest rapid transit line in American history, after the Sacramento Northern Railway's Chico and Colusa services, and the Pacific Electric's own Riverside–Rialto Line.
The Balboa Line was the southernmost route of the Pacific Electric Railway. It ran between Downtown Los Angeles and the Balboa Peninsula in Orange County by way of North Long Beach, though the route was later cut back to the Newport Dock. It was designated as route 17.
The Owensmouth Line was a Pacific Electric interurban service that connected the San Fernando Valley to Downtown Los Angeles. The route was largely developed as the result of real estate speculation.
Redondo via Gardena was a line of the Pacific Electric Railway. One of two routes to Redondo Beach, this one was faster than the Redondo Beach via Playa del Rey Line as a result of its routing along the quadruple-tracked Watts main line.
San Pedro via Dominguez was a 25.39-mile (40.86 km) interurban transport route, part of the Pacific Electric system in Greater Los Angeles. Its termini were the Pacific Electric Building in Downtown Los Angeles and San Pedro in the south.
San Pedro via Gardena was an interurban line of the Pacific Electric Railway. This was the railway's original route to San Pedro. The line was essential in the establishment of light industry in Torrance. The route closely paralleled the present-day Harbor Transitway.
The Hollywood Line was a local streetcar line of the Pacific Electric Railway. It primarily operated between Downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood, with some trips as far away as Beverly Hills and West Los Angeles. It was the company's busiest route prior to the opening of the Hollywood Subway. Designated as route 32, the line operated from 1909 until 1954.
The Long Beach Line was a major interurban railway operated by the Pacific Electric Railway between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California via Florence, Watts, and Compton. Service began in 1902 and lasted until 1961, the last line of the system to be replaced by buses.
The Sierra Vista Line was a streetcar route mostly operated by the Pacific Electric Railway. It ran from 1895 to 1951 as the short turn making local stops along the Pasadena Short Line on the outside tracks of the Northern Division quadruple-track system.
5 or the 5 Car was a streetcar line operated by the Los Angeles Railway, later named the Los Angeles Transit Lines, and by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority. From 1920 to 1932, this route was known as the E Car. This was changed as part of a method to distinguish routes that lacked loops at their termini. Consequently, the 5 Car was unique during the LAMTA era in that it did not use PCC streetcars. It used buses from 1955 to 1964, transferring from LATL in 1958, then splitting the line in two in 1961, until all lines were turned over to SCRTD in August 1964.
The Echo Park Avenue Line was a Pacific Electric streetcar line in Los Angeles. The railway traveled from 11th and Hill Streets in downtown Los Angeles along the Hollywood Line to Sunset Boulevard where it turned right and proceeded north along Echo Park Avenue to terminate at Cerro Gordo Street in the Echo Park neighborhood.
The Long Beach–San Pedro Line is a former Pacific Electric interurban railway service in Los Angeles County, California. Unlike most of the company's services, trains did not travel to Downtown Los Angeles and instead provided a service between Long Beach and San Pedro. It was designated as line 9.
The Riverside–Arlington Line is a former Pacific Electric interurban railway line in the Inland Empire. The route provided suburban service between San Bernardino and Arlington with a later extension to Corona. It operated between 1893 and 1943.
The Pomona–Claremont Line was a Pacific Electric streetcar line in Southern California. Unlike most of the company's services, cars did not travel to Downtown Los Angeles and instead provided a suburban service between Pomona, Claremont, and Upland.
The Venice Boulevard Line was a local streetcar line of the Pacific Electric. It operated between Downtown Los Angeles and Vineyard Junction, where riders could transfer to interurban cars. Nearly all Venice Short Line cars did not accept local passengers, leaving this as the primary streetcar service along its namesake boulevard.
Streetcars in Redlands transported people across the city and region from 1889 until 1936. The city's network of street railways peaked around 1908 before the patchwork of separate companies was consolidated under the Pacific Electric.
The Pacific Electric Railway established streetcar services in Long Beach in 1902. Unlike other cities where Pacific Electric operated local streetcars, Long Beach's system did not predate the company's services. Long Beach's network of streetcars peaked around 1911 with over 30 miles (48 km) of tracks throughout the city. Local services were discontinued in 1940, but interurban service to Los Angeles persisted until 1961. The route of the former main interurban line was rebuilt in the late 1980s as the Metro Blue Line, which operates at-grade with car traffic for a portion of its length.
