Janesville is the most populous city and the county seat of Rock County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a principal municipality of the Janesville, Wisconsin, Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Madison–Janesville–Beloit, WI Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 65,615, making it the tenth-most populous city in Wisconsin.
James Edward Doyle Jr. is an American attorney and politician who served as the 44th governor of Wisconsin from 2003 to 2011. In his first election to the governorship, he narrowly defeated incumbent Republican governor Scott McCallum. Although in 2002 Democrats increased their number of governorships, Doyle was the only one of them to unseat a Republican.
Janesville Assembly Plant was a former automobile factory owned by General Motors located in Janesville, Wisconsin. Opened in 1919, it was the oldest operating GM plant when it was largely idled in December 2008, and ceased all remaining production on April 23, 2009. The demolition of the plant was completed in 2019.
Michael James "Mike" Sheridan is an American consultant, substance abuse counselor, and former politician from Janesville, Wisconsin. A Democrat, he was the 77th speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly (2009–2011), and represented Janesville in the Assembly for six years. He currently works as head of business development in Wisconsin for Recovery Centers of America. Prior to his legislative service, he worked at the General Motors Janesville Assembly plant and was president of the United Auto Workers Local 95 from 2002 through 2008.
John Winans was an American lawyer and politician in Janesville, Wisconsin. He served one term in the United States House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, and served six years in the Wisconsin State Assembly representing Janesville and central Rock County. He also held several local offices, including two terms as Mayor of Janesville.
The 2002 Wisconsin gubernatorial election was held on November 5, 2002. Incumbent Republican Governor of Wisconsin Scott McCallum, who had assumed office upon the resignation of Tommy Thompson, ran for his first full term in office. McCallum won his party's nomination by defeating two minor candidates, and Attorney General of Wisconsin Jim Doyle won the Democratic primary with a little more than a third of the vote in a highly competitive primary election. In the general election, the presence of Ed Thompson, former Governor Tommy Thompson's younger brother, the Mayor of Tomah, and the Libertarian Party nominee, held both McCallum and Doyle to under fifty percent of the vote, enabling Doyle to win with 45% of the vote, defeating McCallum. As of 2022, this is the last gubernatorial election in which the Democratic candidate carried Taylor, Langlade, Marquette, Manitowoc, and Racine counties, and the last in which Juneau County did not vote for the Republican candidate, instead voting for Thompson.
Joseph J. "Joe" Knilans is an American government administrator and former politician. A Republican, he most recently served as an appointee of U.S. President Donald Trump at the Small Business Administration. He previously served one term in the Wisconsin State Assembly and worked as an appointee of Governor Scott Walker at the Office of Business Development in the Wisconsin Department of Administration.

Pliny Norcross was an American lawyer, businessman, and Republican politician from Janesville, Wisconsin. He was the 20th mayor of Janesville, and an important character in the development of the city—responsible for the first electric power-generating plants in the city. He represented Rock County in the Wisconsin State Assembly for four terms spread across the 1860s, 1880s, and 1900s, and served four years as district attorney. Earlier in life, he served as an officer in the Union Army through most of the American Civil War and was described as the first University of Wisconsin student to volunteer for the war.

William Billings Sheldon was an American lawyer and Wisconsin pioneer. He was an early settler of Janesville, Wisconsin, and served in the Legislature of the Wisconsin Territory. He was Speaker of the Assembly during the Special Session of the 1st Legislature.
Kristina Marie Shelton is an American educator and politician. A Democrat, she represents the 90th district of the Wisconsin State Assembly, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The 33rd Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in southeast Wisconsin, the district comprises the southern half of Jefferson County and parts of northeast Rock County. It includes the cities of Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, and Milton, along with the norrthern half of the city of Whitewater and part of the city of Janesville, as well as the villages of Palmyra and Sullivan. The district is represented by Republican Scott Johnson, since January 2023.

All of Wisconsin's partisan executive and administrative offices were up for election, as well as one of Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seats, Wisconsin's eight seats in the United States House of Representatives, the seventeen odd-numbered seats in the Wisconsin State Senate, and all 99 seats in the Wisconsin State Assembly. The 2022 Wisconsin fall primary was held on August 9, 2022.
Scott L. Johnson is an American farmer, consultant, and Republican politician. He is a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing Wisconsin's 33rd Assembly district since January 2023.
William Freeman Tompkins Sr. was an American farmer, businessman, politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the city of Janesville in the 1850 and 1851 sessions. He was also one of the first proprietors of the Janesville Gazette. He served in elected office as a Whig but after the dissolution of that party, he joined the Democratic Party. He was described as an extremist for temperance, and the "Father of Temperance in Rock County".
