Surfing the Void is the second studio album by British indie rock [1] band Klaxons, released on 23 August 2010 through Polydor Records. The album was produced by Ross Robinson, and was recorded in Los Angeles, California. The album was preceded by lead single "Echoes" on 16 August.
Following the release of the band's Mercury Prize-winning debut Myths of the Near Future in 2007, Klaxons began working on their second effort the following year. The band returned to working with original producer James Ford, aiming for release in early 2009. In March 2009, it was reported that the band had been told to re-record parts of their second album, with initial efforts rejected by Polydor for being "too experimental for release". The album was eventually recorded between November 2009 and February 2010 with producer Ross Robinson.
Surfing the Void reached number ten on the UK Albums Chart, as well as multiple charts worldwide. The album marked Klaxons' first entry into the Australian market at the time, debuting at number 15 on the ARIA Charts. Critical reception to the album was generally favourable, with many reviewers commenting on the band's progression from their debut.
In July 2007, bassist and vocalist Jamie Reynolds stated that the band were to begin writing parts of their second album individually, aiming to compile at the conclusion of their then-current touring schedule. Reynolds would go on to describe the work as a "prog doom" album. [3] Later in the year during the band's November–December tour of the United Kingdom, Simon Taylor-Davis told NME that the band were currently playing an untitled prog track during soundcheck. [4] Later in the year, the band confirmed they were heading to France to record with James Ford, aiming to be completed by Christmas for release in early 2009. [5]
In March 2009, it was reported that the band had been told to re-record parts of their second album, after it was rejected by label Polydor. Reynolds said that "...we've made a really dense, psychedelic record" and that "it isn't the right thing for us [the band]". [6] In an interview with BBC News, Reynolds revealed that "Moonhead" and new track "Marble Fields and the Hydrolight Head of Delusion" were "probably going to make it", and that they were working with "Simian Mobile Disco production" during April–May 2009. Reynolds added that "Valley of the Calm Trees" had been retitled "The Parhelion", to reflect its lyrical content. [7] James Ford - of Simian Mobile Disco - confirmed working with the band later in the year, stating in an interview with Newsbeat that they were "...trying to keep it melodic and vocal because that's one of their great strong points". [8]
It was announced during November 2009 that the band were now working with producer Ross Robinson, with Robinson confirming through his Twitter account. [9] The band stated that work with Ford had gone astray, reaching difficulties with Ford acting as both producer and drummer. [10] Recording was completed to the satisfaction of both band and label in February 2010. [9]
The band released some of the material from the original sessions on a free EP titled "Landmarks of Lunacy" via their website on 25 December 2010.
In October 2008, Klaxons made their live return with a series of gigs in Europe and South America, debuting new tracks "Valley of the Calm Trees" and "Moonhead". [11] These were the band's first performances since NME's Big Gig eight months prior. [12] The band would then join Modular Records's NeverEverLand festival, which toured Australia throughout December 2008. [13] The band made their live return to the United Kingdom at the beginning of 2009, playing a small club show at Madame Jojo's in London. During the set, the band featured new songs "Imaginary Pleasures" and "In Silver Forest", together with the previously aired "Moonhead" and "Valley of the Calm Trees". [14]
On 22 May 2009, the band announced a one-off show at Coventry's Kasbah nightclub, their only scheduled headline UK performance. [15] The concert, to take place on June 3, sparked rumours that the band may feature at the 2009 Glastonbury Festival. [16] The band supported Blur at their comeback show at the Manchester Evening News Arena on June 26, [17] before playing a surprise set at Glastonbury the following day. The set included further new songs "Hoodoo Bora", "Future Memory" and "Echoes". [18] In addition to Glastonbury, the band featured at numerous other festivals including Bestival, [19] Ibiza Rocks, [20] and headlined the Croatian Hartera festival. [21] In June 2009, Klaxons announced that the release date of the album had been pushed back to early 2010, with Reynolds stating: "We'd really like to put out the first great record of the 2010s rather than the last great one of this decade." [22]
In March 2010, it was confirmed that the band would be playing Open'er Festival in Poland as well as the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the United Kingdom, where they are to headline the BBC Radio 1/ NME Stage. [23] Taylor-Davies suggested Reading and Leeds would be a UK-exclusive, saying "I think in England it's just going to be Reading and Leeds, in terms of festivals, this summer". [24] The band have also announced an eight date tour of the United Kingdom and France in support of the new album, taking place during May–July 2010. For live performances, they are to be joined by Anthony Rossomando (formerly of Dirty Pretty Things) as a touring member. [9] Further festival performances include Spain's Benicàssim Festival, Pohoda in Slovakia, [25] and EXIT in Serbia. [26]

After a boozy night out with myself, Richard Robinson, Jamie Reynolds and new live band member Anthony Rossamondo we ended up back at Anthony’s flat where our attention focused on firstly a fictional record for Richard and then on the new Klaxons sleeve. Before long we were looking at random pictures of cats in spacesuits and laughed at how striking a massive billboard would look, and that was the beginning! We soon set about making it a reality, the label hired a real space suit from the US, Richard designed flags and badges to complete the picture. All that was left was to get Jamie’s cat in the spotlight and hope he was up to the task…. We couldn’t have asked for more, he was a true pro and we sent the backup cats home!

In January 2011 it was announced that the cover had won a prize for the best album artwork of 2010. [27]
The album's title was revealed on 25 May 2010. [28] Zane Lowe premiered the promotional track "Flashover" on BBC Radio 1, naming the track his "Hottest Record in the World" for 25 May 2010. [29] From 8pm the same day, the track was made available to listen to from the band's website. [28] The album's first official single was announced as "Echoes", which was released on 16 August 2010. [25] The track peaked at number 55 on the UK Singles Chart. [30] Surfing the Void entered the UK Albums Chart upon its release, peaking at number ten in the week beginning 29 August 2010. [31] Worldwide, the album reached number fifteen in the Australian ARIA Charts, [32] as well charting on the Irish, [33] Swiss [34] and Belgian (Wallonia) Album Charts. Media response to Surfing the Void was generally favourable, with many professional reviews commented on the band's progression from their debut album. [38] Aggregating website Metacritic reported a normalised rating of 68, based on thirteen positive and ten mixed critical reviews, indicating generally favorable reviews. [46] Dorian Lynskey of The Guardian awarded the album three stars out of five, applauding the band's efforts to stand out from conventional indie music. [41] BBC reviewer Andy Fyfe noted the band's move away from their new rave labelling, comparing the band favourably to The Prodigy and Depeche Mode. [38] In December 2010, Hot Press noted: "Despite being an excellent collection of catchy psych-rock tunes, the record's tortured creation [...] did [Klaxons] no favours and there was a feeling of anti-climax when it finally surfaced late this summer." The Man Who is the second studio album by the Scottish rock band Travis. The album was released on 24 May 1999 through Independiente. It saw a change in musical direction for the band, moving away from the rockier tone of their debut Good Feeling (1997). Four singles were released: "Writing to Reach You", "Driftwood", and the top 10 hits "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" and "Turn".
Don't Believe the Truth is the sixth studio album by English rock band Oasis. It was released on 30 May 2005 by Big Brother Recordings. It reached number one in the UK Albums Chart with first week sales of 237,865, and is the 32nd fastest selling album ever in the UK. The album entered the US charts at number 12, with 65,000 copies sold in the first week, the highest any Oasis album had reached there since 1997's Be Here Now, although its chart stay was brief. Don't Believe the Truth went triple platinum in the UK in the first week of 2006, and in the US has sold more than 200,000 copies.

Enter Shikari are a British rock band formed in St Albans in 1999 by bassist Chris Batten, lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds, and drummer Rob Rolfe. Both have since been certified silver in the UK. The band spent a considerable amount of time supporting the latter release through the A Flash Flood of Colour World Tour, before beginning work on a fourth studio album, The Mindsweep, which was released in 2015. Their fifth studio album The Spark was released in 2017. Their sixth album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible was released in April 2020. Their seventh and latest album, A Kiss for the Whole World, was released on 21 April 2023 which gave them their first-ever No. 1 album.
Black Holes and Revelations is the fourth studio album by English rock band Muse, first released on 3 July 2006 through Warner Bros. Records and Muse's Helium-3 imprint. It was produced by Rich Costey over four months in New York City, London, Milan and southern France.
The Sunshine Underground were an English alternative dance band based in Leeds, England. Their style developed from indie, alternative to electronic music, and they released four full-length albums; Raise the Alarm (2006), Nobody's Coming to Save You (2010), The Sunshine Underground (2014) and their farewell album, Luminescent (2016). The group, named after a song from the 1999 album Surrender by The Chemical Brothers, were often associated with the British nu-rave scene of 2006 and built a respectable live following after years of touring.
Myths of the Near Future is the debut album by English rock band Klaxons. It was released on 29 January 2007 through Polydor Records. Following their debut single, the band coined the term "new rave" to refer to their sound; not long after their second single, they signed to Polydor Records. They recorded their debut album with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco at The Premises and Parkgate Studios. Myths of the Near Future, which takes its title from a poem, is a science-fiction concept album about the future; some of the song's titles and lyrics are literary references to the works of J. G. Ballard, William S. Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon. To critics, its sound recalled the indie dance-punk revival led by bands such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand.
Courteeners are an English band formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester, in 2006 by Liam Fray, Michael Campbell, Daniel "Conan" Moores and Mark Cuppello (bass); the last was replaced by the band's producer Joe Cross in 2015. They previously toured with pianist Adam Payne, who has been featured on every album, but in 2019 was replaced with Elina Lin. In December 2012, the band dropped "The" from their name, continuing simply as "Courteeners". In 2024, Cross and Lin became official members of the band.
The Big Pink are an English electronic rock band from London, consisting of multi-instrumentalists Robertson "Robbie" Furze, Akiko Matsuura and Charlie Barker. Initially a duo, they signed to independent record label 4AD in 2009 and won the NME Philip Hall Radar Award for best new act. To date, they have released five singles, with their debut album A Brief History of Love released in September 2009 and its follow-up, Future This released in January 2012.
Humbug is the third studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, first released on 19 August 2009 through Domino Recording Company. The band started to write new material for the album towards the end of summer 2008 and finished it entirely in spring 2009. Like their previous release, Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug was released first in Japan, followed by Australia, Brazil, Ireland, and Germany, on 21 August 2009. Written by band-members Jamie Smith, Oliver Sim, Romy Madley Croft and then-member Baria Qureshi, "Islands" is a dark and simple indie pop track. It also contains influences from house music and features instrumentation from guitars and synthesizers. Croft and Sim, who provided vocals in the track, sing about themes related to loyalty and love. Suck It and See is the fourth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 6 June 2011 by Domino Recording Company. The album's songs were written by frontman Alex Turner in 2010 on an acoustic guitar in his, at the time, Brooklyn home. It was produced in Los Angeles at Sound City Studios by the band's longtime collaborator James Ford in early 2011, using mostly live takes opposed to overdubbing. The album's title, a British phrase meaning "give it a try", was viewed as provocative in the United States due to being misinterpreted as referencing fellatio, and was subsequently censored in some locations. The artwork features the album title in black over a cream colored background.
The Weight of Your Love is the fourth studio album from the British band Editors. It was released on 28 June 2013 by PIAS Recordings. The first single "A Ton of Love" first aired on 6 May 2013 on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show, with the music video being released on the same day.

The album, produced by the band's leader, songwriter, guitarist, and second vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, and named after its total running time, was released in Germany on 6 June 2014 and in the UK on 9 June 2014. The album entered at number one on the UK Albums Chart in its first week of release making it the band's fourth consecutive UK number one album. The album received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics who were divided on the electronic-heavy direction as well as criticising the lyrics.
