The Taipei Women's Championships is a defunct WTA Tour-affiliated women's tennis tournament played from 1986 to 1989 and from 1992 to 1994. It was held in Taipei, Taiwan and played on indoor carpet courts from 1986 to 1988, and on outdoor hard courts in 1989 and from 1992 to 1994. The 1980s tours were sponsored partly by Virginia Slims, and the 1990s events were sponsored by Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble, the latter of which were named P&G Taiwan Women's Open or Taiwan Open in short. Anne Minter and Shi-Ting Wang were the most successful players at the tournament, each winning the singles competition twice.

History

The inaugural 1986 tournament was called the Chung Cheng Centennial Cup International Women's Tennis Championships and ran from October 6–12, 1986 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Chiang Kai-shek's birth.^[1] The 32-draw singles and 16-draw doubles was played on carpet and the prize money for singles was $50,000. The winner of the singles tournament was Patricia Hy of Hong Kong who defeated Adriana Villagrán of Argentina in three sets.^[2]^[3] It was part of the WTA's 1986 Virginia Slims World Championship Series schedule. In 1989, the tournament switched to outdoor hard courts.^[4] There was no tournament in Taipei for 1990 or 1991.

From 1992 to 1994, the tournament was run on outdoor hard courts where it was sponsored by Kraft Foods and called the P&G Taiwan Women's Open. It was played at the Taipei City Courts,^[5] also known as Taipei Municipal Tennis Courts.^[6]^[7]

Highlights of her singles career include reaching the semifinals at the 2006 Japan Open and the final at the Bangkok Open in 2007. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 50 on 11 June 2007, and became world No. 1 in doubles on 23 October 2017, the second Taiwanese player to do so, after Hsieh Su-wei. She again topped the doubles rankings on 13 August 2018, and has spent a total of 34 weeks as world No. 1.

Hsieh Su-wei is a Taiwanese professional tennis player. A former world No. 1 in doubles with nine Grand Slam titles, she is regarded as one of the most successful and versatile doubles players in history. She also reached world No. 23 in singles, and is the highest-ranked Taiwanese player in history in both singles and doubles. She is known for playing with two hands on both sides, flat and quick groundstrokes, crafty and wily gameplay, aggressive volleys, and unorthodox variety of shots.

The Brisbane International established in 2009 is a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hardcourts in Brisbane, Queensland in Australia. It is a WTA 500 tournament and ATP 250 tournament.

Zheng Saisai or Zheng Sai-Sai is a Chinese tennis player. She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 34, achieved on 2 March 2020, and a doubles ranking of No. 15, achieved on 11 July 2016. The 1993 P&G Taiwan Women's Tennis Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the Taipei Municipal Tennis Court in Taipei, Taiwan that was part of the Tier IV category of the 1993 WTA Tour. It was the sixth edition of the tournament and was held from 5 October through 10 October 1993. First-seeded Wang Shi-ting won the singles title and earned $18,000 first-prize money.

The 1994 P&G Taiwan Women's Tennis Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts at the Taipei Municipal Tennis Court in Taipei, Taiwan that was part of the Tier IV category of the 1994 WTA Tour. It was the seventh and last edition of the tournament and was held from 14 November to 20 November 1994. First-seeded Wang Shi-ting won the singles title and earned $18,000 first-prize money.

The 2019 WTA Tour was the elite professional tennis circuit organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the 2019 tennis season. The 2019 WTA Tour calendar was composed of the Grand Slam tournaments (supervised by the International Tennis Federation, the WTA Premier tournaments, the WTA International tournaments, the Fed Cup, and the year-end championships. The Hopman Cup, organized by the ITF, also is included but did not distribute ranking points.

The 2021 WTA Tour was the elite professional tennis circuit organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the 2021 tennis season. The 2021 WTA Tour calendar comprises the Grand Slam tournaments, the WTA 1000 tournaments, the WTA 500 tournaments, the WTA 250 tournaments, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the year-end championships. Also included in the 2021 calendar are the Summer Olympic Games, which were rescheduled from 2020.
