Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (Tamil Nadu Muslim Progress Conference) or TMMK is a Muslim non-governmental organisation established in the state of Tamil Nadu in India in 1995. The TMMK has described itself in news releases as "a mass based" organisation. [2]

Background

The objective of TMMK is to protect the rights of the Muslim community in a democratic manner. [3] TMMK has its branch offices in all the districts of Tamil Nadu and in several villages of the state. It also has its foreign offices in Malaysia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries has more than 1 lakh members. It was involved in Tsunami relief work [4] and does social services including blood donation camps, [5] eye camps [6] and free ambulance services to poor. It

Activities

Rallies and protests

TMMK invites public to hold peaceful protests and demonstrations for demanding rights of Muslims. [7] In February 2005, the TMMK urged the then-Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram to direct the Wakf Board to send all its communications only in the Tamil language to the administrators of mosques. [8] A March 2007 rally organised by the TMMK in New Delhi drew support from the Association of Indian Muslims (AIM) of America. [9] The TMMK has campaigned for the reservation of seats in educational institutions and the ear-marking of entrepreneurship schemes for Muslims in Tamil Nadu as per the recommendations of the Sachar Committee. [10] The Tamil Nadu Thawheedh Jamaath (TNTJ) has been termed "a breakaway group" of the organisation. [11]

Every year TMMK observes the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition in a peaceful manner. [12] These protests draw huge number of people from across the Tamil Nadu state and demand the arrest of 68 perpetrators including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Balasaheb Thackeray, LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi as implicated by Liberhan commission. [13] The organisation has also stages many protests for the protection Tamil Nadu fishermen [14] and dalits.

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi

In early 2009, a new political party Manithaneya Makkal Katchi was launched after an amendment to the bylaws. [15] [16] [17] [18] The party contested in the parliamentary election the same year in 4 constituencies and polled 68,346 votes. [19] But in the 2011 Assembly election, MMK allied with AIADMK and won 2 of 3 seats contested.

Views on terrorism

TMMK has condemned several acts of terrorism in India and in foreign lands. When the Al-Qaeda released a video related to Indian sub-continent, TMMK condemned it and advised Indian Muslims to ignore such hate messages. The leader of TMMK said “this (message) will only help security agencies in country to further target Muslim youth in case a terrorist act does take place. [20] ” In several occasion, TMMK has also condemned Israel for its brutality against Palestinian People. [21] It has also raised voices for UN intervention to stop genocide of Palestinians. [22] Similarly, TMMK has protested the genocide of Tamil people in Sri Lanka. [23]

Criticism

On 6 December 2003, 450 activists of the TMMK were arrested for attempting stage a protest rally. [26] Similar arrests were made earlier in 2000 where TMMK members were implicated. [27]

The Liberhan Commission was a long-running inquiry commissioned by the Government of India to investigate the destruction of the disputed structure Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992. Led by retired High Court Judge M. S. Liberhan, it was formed on 16 December 1992 by an order of the Indian Home Union Ministry after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on 6 December and the subsequent riots there. The commission was originally mandated to submit its report within three months. Extensions were given 48 times, and after a delay of 17 years, the one-man commission submitted the report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 30 June 2009. In November 2009, a day after a newspaper published the allegedly leaked contents of the report, the report was tabled in Parliament by the Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Tamil Muslim Adherents of Islam who identify linguistically, culturally, and genealogically as Tamils

Tamil Muslims are Tamils who practise Islam. The community is at least 4.5 million people in India, primarily in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil-speaking Muslims are descendants of marriages between early West Asian Muslims and Tamil women as well as local converts. The community is predominantly urban. There is a substantial diaspora, particularly in Southeast Asia, which has seen their presence as early as the 13th century. In the late 20th century, the diaspora expanded to Western Europe, Gulf Countries and North America. A separate predominantly Tamil-speaking Muslim population also exists in Sri Lanka known as the Sri Lankan Moors, who do not identify as Tamils but are a mixture of Arab, Persian, South Indian and Malay ancestries of which the Dravidian element is predominant because of centuries of heavy Indian injection.

1998 Coimbatore bombings Bombings in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India

The 1998 Coimbatore bombings occurred on Saturday, 14 February 1998, in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 58 people were killed and over 200 injured in the 12 bomb attacks in 11 places, all within a 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) radius. The explosives used were found to be gelatin sticks activated by timer devices and were concealed in cars, motorcycles, bicycles, sideboxes of two-wheelers, denim and rexin bags, and fruit carts. Several bombs that failed to detonate were defused by bomb disposal squads of the Army, National Security Guards and Tamil Nadu Commando School. The bombings were apparently in retaliation to the 1997 Coimbatore riots during November – December the previous year, when Hindu fundamentalists groups killed 18 Muslims and looted several thousands of properties of Muslims following the murder of a traffic policeman named Selvaraj, by a member of the radical Islamist group Al Ummah. The main conspirator was found to be S A Basha, the founder of Al Ummah, an Islamic fundamentalist body. Investigators found out that the blasts were a part of larger conspiracy to target L.K.Advani, the leader of Bharatiya Janata Party on that day at 4 p.m in his election meeting.

National Development Front

The National Development Front (NDF) was a Non-Sunni Muslim organisation set up in Kerala. It was established in India in 1994 and merged with Popular Front of India in 2006 and stated that its objective was to "focus on socio-economical issues of minorities giving a focus to Kerala Muslims in Kerala".

Kalyan Singh Indian politician (1932–2021)

Kalyan Singh was an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served twice as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and as a Member of Parliament. He was the Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh during the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992. He was considered an icon of Hindu nationalism, and of the agitation to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Thol. Thirumavalavan Indian politician

Tholkappiyan Thirumavalavan, better known as Thol. Thirumavalavan is a political leader, scholar and activist from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He is a Member of Parliament from Chidambaram. Founder and President of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. He rose to prominence in the 1990s as a Dalit leader, and formally entered politics in 1999. His political platform centres on ending caste discrimination and consequently the caste system. He has also expressed support for Tamil nationalist movements in Sri Lanka.

Tamizhaga Murpokku Makkal Katchi formerly known as Makkal Manadu Katchi, is a regional political party in India, actively involved in the political affairs of Tamilnadu State. The Party came into being in 2005 with the objective of being a people centered, poor friendly political alternative and to spearhead the ideology of self-reliant economy to alleviate poverty, unemployment, backwardness and to eradicate economic disadvantages and social inequalities in the country. The party vehemently opposes dependent economy, neglect of indigenous resources and voice against the anomaly of leaving the production of key commodities at the hands of a few influential people. The party is a strong proponent of probity in public life and weed out the corruption thereby.

2004 Indian general election in Tamil Nadu

The 2004 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a victory for the Democratic Progressive Alliance, which included the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and its allies the Left Front which won all 39 seats in the state. DMK and its allies were also able to hold on to Pondicherry, which has 1 seat, which allowed the UPA to win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The 2 larger partners Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) (16) and Indian National Congress (INC) (10) won the majority of seats, with the junior partners Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) (5) and Marumaralarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) (4) winning the rest. The remaining 4 seats were won by the Left Front parties. Due to the support of the Left Front for the government at the centre, all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, supported the formation of the UPA-led government.

Social Democratic Party of India Indian political party

It is the political outfit of the Islamic organization, Popular Front of India (PFI). It was registered with the Election Commission of India on 13 April 2010. Demolition of the Babri Masjid 1992 religious riot in India

The demolition of the Babri Masjid was illegally carried out on 6 December 1992 by a large group of activists of the Vishva Hindu Parishad and allied organisations. The 16th-century Babri Masjid in the city of Ayodhya, in Uttar Pradesh, had been the subject of a lengthy socio-political dispute, and was targeted after a political rally organised by Hindu nationalist organisations turned violent.

2011 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election Elections to the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu

The Fourteenth Legislative Assembly Election was held on 13 April 2011 to elect members from 234 constituencies in the India state of Tamil Nadu. Results were released on 13 May 2011. Two major parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced the election as coalitions of multiple political parties: DMK front consisted of 8 parties and the AIADMK of 11 parties. Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which had contested the previous elections independently, allied with the AIADMK coalition. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam boycotted the election following a disagreement with Jayalalithaa over seat-sharing. Tamil film actor Vijay was openly involved in Tamil Nadu politics for the first time by extending his support for AIADMK.

Manithaneya Makkal Katchi is a political party in Tamil Nadu, India. Its president is M. H. Jawahirullah.

Reservation policy in Tamil Nadu is a system of affirmative action that provides historically disadvantaged groups representation in education, employment and politics. The reservations in the state rose from 41 percent in 1954 to 69 percent in 1990.

Dr. Prof. M. H. Jawahirullah is an Indian politician currently elected as a member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly 2021 from Papanasam Constituency and a former member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Ramanathapuram constituency. He represents the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi party, of which he is the founding member and present leader. He also the member of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazagham.

Mansoor Ali Khan is an Indian actor who has appeared in Tamil films, predominantly in supporting and comedy roles. He has also acted in a few Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films.

2013 Anti–Sri Lanka protests

The 2013 Anti–Sri Lanka protests are a series of student protests and agitations initiated by the Students Federation for Freedom of Tamil Eelam in Tamil Nadu, India, against war crimes committed against Sri Lankan Tamil people by Sri Lankan army during the Eelam War IV. The protesters demanded that the Government of India vote in support of a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution censuring the Government of Sri Lanka for war crimes. Some radical groups even demanded the prosecution of the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapakse for his role in the alleged genocide of Sri Lankan Tamils. Apart from college students, doctors, film personalities and employees of IT companies also participated in the protests.

Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath

Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) is an Islamic organization based in Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 2004. TNTJ claims to preach true Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims as per Quran and Prophetic ways, only through authentic hadith. It claims to be a non-political organization. Ideologically due to its theological stand, it considers only a sovereign state can take up weapons and any thing contrary is against the fundamentals of Islam. TNTJ is also involved in social activities and awareness of condemning extremism through rallies and propaganda.
